The Boys boss confirms season 5 filming begins very soon!
As a die-hard fan who has been following The Boys since its inception, I can confidently say that this subversive superhero series has become a breath of fresh air in the genre. With each season, the storyline becomes more intriguing and gritty, leaving me eager for more.
In a field where Marvel and DC have a stronghold, it’s quite challenging for other superhero universes to make their mark. Yet, Amazon Prime Video’s unconventional superhero series The Boys has soared to impressive heights, captivating audiences with its unique blend of graphic violence, explicit language, and a gripping narrative, all while offering something refreshingly different.
Since season 4 premiered earlier this year, fans know they’ll have to wait a while longer for the fifth and concluding season. Interestingly, production on the final season hasn’t begun yet, but the showrunner, Eric Kripke, shared some encouraging news about the upcoming episodes during a For Your Consideration (FYC) interview with Collider. He disclosed that filming will start in just over a week from now, which is less than two weeks away.
Initially, everyone was taken aback by the choice to conclude the series at season 5, given Eric Kripke’s penchant for extending his shows as much as feasible – just look at Supernatural, which spanned an impressive 15 seasons. However, in the case of The Boys, he felt it was best not to overstay its welcome and believed that season 5 offered the most fitting conclusion for the narrative, despite his reluctance to acknowledge the series’ end.
Kripke acknowledged that due to his current busy schedule, he’s managed to avoid facing the reality for quite some time. He expressed that as the workload continues, he suspects a moment of deep emotional impact will eventually strike him right in the middle of this period.
Kripke expresses concern that The Boys might overstay its welcome, losing its impactful edge. He likened it to punk rock, explaining that it’s particularly painful when punk rockers compromise their ideals. He assures us he’s making a concerted effort not to compromise the series as it grows, with spinoffs like Gen V on the horizon.
We do these shows because we really care about them and we’re passionate about them. They can tell fresh stories that we can’t tell in The Boys and not just be about rapid expansion but be very careful and mindful about the choices we’re making and being able to defend why we’re making them. I worry about that every single day.
Interestingly, although they’re filming the last season, Kripke admits that he hasn’t disclosed to the cast and crew how their characters will ultimately end. He stated, “We’ve reached a point where I can outline the overall character arcs, but these are emotional arcs, enabling the actors to prepare for their journey and anticipate some plot twists and turns.” He added, “Certain aspects are still being worked out, but we have a clear idea of where each character’s emotional journey concludes.
It’s anticipated that the fifth season of “The Boys” will debut around 2026, and the climactic battle between Billy Butcher and Homelander is shaping up to be quite spectacular! In the interim, the second installment of “Gen Z” is set for release in 2025.
