Antony Starr might seem like an approachable science or drama teacher in everyday life, but he’s globally famous for playing the terrifying villain Homelander in the TV show The Boys. People usually only recognize him when he’s in character – with blonde hair and his signature American flag cape. Surprisingly, fans often don’t notice him when he’s not in costume, and even less so when he’s with his fellow actors.
Starr recently talked to GQ about the upcoming fifth and final season of The Boys, teasing a reunion between Jensen Ackles, Jared Padalecki, and Misha Collins. He was surprised and flattered to hear that many people consider his character one of the best villains in recent TV history, a perception he doesn’t quite realize even after playing the role for years. As he put it:
Honestly, any praise directed at me feels a little misplaced – it really speaks to the strength of the entire show. It truly takes a collaborative effort to pull something like this off, and I’m just happy to be a part of it. I always say I’m taking it for the team! Plus, I’ve got a bit of an advantage – I don’t resemble my character at all, which makes getting into the role a fun challenge.
Starr believes Homelander’s success is due to the consistently high quality of the entire show. If any part of the production hadn’t measured up, it would have negatively impacted everyone involved, from the actors to the dedicated crew working on this final season. Therefore, everyone deserves recognition for their contributions.
It’s funny how often people don’t recognize the actor who plays Starr, even though he’s standing right in front of them with the rest of the cast. He’s said fans will actually ask him to take their picture with the other actors – it’s like asking Clark Kent to photograph you with Jimmy Olsen! (I’d definitely do that, though.) They don’t seem to connect the person behind the glasses with the powerful character he portrays.
Here’s how the actor describes those amusingly baffling experiences:
I mostly just blend in and go with the flow. I get a better feel for how popular the show is when I’m with my co-stars. Often, fans don’t even notice the rest of us are around, which is exactly how I like it. I’m perfectly content doing my own thing and keeping a low profile.
It’s understandable if people have trouble telling Antony Starr apart from his character, Homelander. In real life, Starr has dark hair, often with a mustache and beard, which is quite different from Homelander’s bright blonde hair and shaved face. Add glasses to the mix, and he just looks like a regular guy – almost like a more down-to-earth relative of Homelander, maybe even a poet!
As a movie buff, I always think about those awkward audition stories, and this one with Starr is a good example. I wonder if he’d actually prefer everyone had not recognized him during that disastrous James Bond tryout. Or maybe, just maybe, he secretly wishes he could redo it, even knowing he doesn’t have a British accent!
Fans can soon expect Antony Starr to return as the iconic Homelander in the final season of The Boys. The first trailer is now available – watch it below!
Season 5 of The Boys will bring the show’s explosive and chaotic events to a close, arriving on Amazon Prime Video sometime in 2026. More information will be announced soon, so watch out for any celebrities who seem a little too much like Homelander!
