The Boy and The Heron confirms streaming release date
As a long-time anime and Studio Ghibli fan, I can hardly contain my excitement about the upcoming US streaming release of “The Boy and The Heron” on Max, and the imminent arrival of this masterpiece on Netflix UK!
The Boy and The Heron has landed a US streaming release date.
Starting September 6, you can only stream the Oscar-winning film on Max, expanding their Studio Ghibli library with this addition.
Exciting update: Outside of the U.S. and Japan, Netflix has obtained the streaming rights for “The Boy and The Heron” – look forward to its arrival on Netflix UK very soon, with a release date yet to be announced.
Hayao Miyazaki, a renowned filmmaker from Studio Ghibli, returned to the industry after a ten-year hiatus with “The Boy and The Heron.” He not only penned the script but also helmed the direction of this enchanting animated production.
I was deeply moved by the film, which draws inspiration from Genzaburō Yoshino’s 1937 novel “How Do You Live?” The story follows me, a ten-year-old boy, as I struggle with the loss of my beloved mother. But then something extraordinary happens – a magical talking heron comes into my life and draws me into an enchanting adventure.
The animated film, which was launched in December the previous year, triumphed at the 2024 Oscars and received the award for Best Animated Feature.
As a dedicated gamer and avid fan of anime films, I was thrilled to witness the incredible success of “The Boy and The Heron” on a global scale. This captivating masterpiece surpassed all expectations, outperforming previous records at the US and UK box offices. In doing so, it officially unseated “Spirited Away” (2001) as Studio Ghibli’s highest-grossing film in these markets. What an amazing accomplishment!
The film received a perfect 100% approval rating with the label “Fresh” on Rotten Tomatoes when it was first released, and this high mark now holds at 97%, as of this moment.
In my perspective as an avid fan, this captivating animated film draws from the whimsical imagination of “Spirited Away,” the grandeur of “Princess Mononoke’s” epic tales, and the heartfelt emotion of “My Neighbor Totoro.” The result is a one-of-a-kind coming-of-age story about losing innocence that left me utterly engrossed.
For enthusiasts of Studio Ghibli, there’s thrilling updates: Director Miyazaki has been busy creating a new movie, according to his collaborative partner Suzuki, who announced it in October the previous year.
In an interview with Libération, Suzuki admitted, “He rarely stops pondering over his upcoming venture, and at this point, I find myself powerless to intervene.”
Starting September 6, you can stream “The Boy and The Heron” on Max in the United States. At a later time, this film will be made available on Netflix in the United Kingdom.
Nearly all of Studio Ghibli’s movies are available to stream now on Netflix.
