The Boroughs creators Jeffrey Addiss and Will Matthews reveal the series’ long-term plans.
The creators of the new Netflix sci-fi series, The Boroughs, recently shared their vision for the show, which is planned to span three seasons. From the Duffer Brothers – the team behind Stranger Things – the series centers on the residents of a retirement community who are forced to unite against a terrifying threat from another world. The first season has eight episodes and builds suspense as the group of retirees battles the mysterious danger that’s come to their home.
During a conversation with ScreenRant, the creators of The Boroughs discussed their plans for the show, revealing they envision it potentially lasting three seasons. According to creator Addiss, the series’ continuation depends on a few things, including whether the cast is willing to return – and specifically, if they’re happy filming in Albuquerque, New Mexico, where it’s currently produced. Ultimately, how many people continue to watch the show will also be a key factor in determining its future; higher viewership increases the chances of renewal.
Check out what Addiss had to say below:
ScreenRant: You’ve talked about a three season plan at least, I read. Is that in motion or…
Ultimately, the future of the show depends on audience reception. The cast gets along great, we enjoy filming in Albuquerque, and we’re confident in what we’ve created. Right now, we’re just waiting to see if it gets renewed, and hoping viewers enjoy it.
Whether The Boroughs continues depends on how many people watch and if the actors want to come back. However, Addiss and Matthews clearly have ideas for the show’s future. The science fiction aspects of the series provide a strong foundation for continuing the story, particularly because of the complex and unfolding mystery. Combined with the numerous threats the characters face, this suggests the show could potentially run for a long time if given the chance.
The future of The Boroughs could follow a similar path to Stranger Things, where initial success led to a planned, multi-season storyline. While Addiss and Matthews seem to have a clear vision for where they want the show to go, its continuation isn’t certain. The series boasts a strong cast – including Alfred Molina and Alfre Woodard – and many of them would likely be willing to return if the show gets renewed.
The show has a lot of potential for future seasons, with opportunities to continue the characters’ stories and their mission to protect loved ones. It’s already received great reviews, which suggests it could also attract a large audience as more people discover it.
Netflix’s new sci-fi series has the potential to be a major success in 2026, assuming viewers respond as positively as critics have. However, since the show, The Boroughs, just launched, its fate depends on how well it performs. If it’s a hit, creators Addiss and Matthews may be able to fully realize their creative vision for the series.
