The Block viewers slam ‘unlikeable’ contestants on new season and complain Nine is ‘deliberately casting people who will create drama’
As a dedicated fan of The Block for over two decades now, I must say this year’s premiere left me feeling rather disheartened. The contestants seem to lack the charm and camaraderie that made earlier seasons so enjoyable. It feels like they’ve deliberately cast a bunch of characters who thrive on creating drama instead of focusing on the beauty of home renovation.
On Monday evening, The Block: Island aired, having teased for months about the biggest season yet. However, viewers expressed more disappointment than excitement towards the first episode.
On X, previously recognized as Twitter, numerous viewers expressed that this year’s group of new contestants were generally ‘hard to like’.
In my perspective, some individuals have emphasized the absence of ‘variety in cultural backgrounds’, whereas others have suggested that the teams celebrating our 20th season exist primarily to ‘generate excitement and tension’.
One individual commented, “What’s with everyone being so hard to like this time around? I’m guessing they didn’t do a great job with the cast for this season.” Another noted, “This season seems particularly unstable or eccentric. It might just be the most unusual one yet.”
Another person chimed in, saying, ‘Wow, it seems like I’m the sole individual finding this year’s competitors unpleasant. Terrible females indeed. I have my doubts about tuning in this season.’
One observer noted, comparing eight individuals who were virtually identical except for one with green hair, while another concurred: ‘There’s no elderly pair, no same-sex couple, and not a great deal of cultural representation.’
Some other viewer wrote: ‘No entertaining couples like Mitch and Mark. They were brilliant.’
One user expressed that it seems as if the show intentionally selects actors who cause drama. My wife, judging by her reactions, appears to be on the verge of wanting to eliminate them all.
In a more polite and considerate manner, someone else expressed similar feelings by saying: ‘Absolutely, I’m eager to leave, particularly the lady with the green hair.’
In more recent seasons, the contestants seem to lack the determination they had twenty years ago when the show first started, according to Scott’s revelation.
Last week, I shared with news.com.au my observation that today’s contestants seem to have less resilience compared to those from 20 and 15 years ago.
Last year’s season was fraught with drama, constant squabbles and bullying among the Blockheads.
As a lifestyle expert, I recently came across a passionate letter written by a viewer who expressed their concerns about the show “The Block.” This viewer felt that the continuous disagreements among contestants gave the series an unpleasant and toxic vibe, which they found hard to watch.
Longtime viewer Evie Farrell stated that she would not allow her young child to watch the show, as it has more instances of bullying than constructive elements. She’s opted to stop viewing the highly-rated program for this reason.
Farrell highlighted the ‘negative incidents, dramatic conflicts, and scandals’ within the show, particularly focusing on the growing tension between the pair Steph and Gian, as well as their relationships with other competitors.
She mentioned that Leah, Ash, Kristy, and Brett seem to be focusing their attention, or perhaps manipulations, specifically on Steph, who, as she put it, seems particularly emotionally exposed at the moment.
In an article published by Mamamia, Farrell expressed confusion about why The Block is choosing to center a harmful and unsettling bullying plot as the primary storyline for this season.
She suggested that we should opt for ‘presenting positive figures whom the entire family could jointly observe and encourage’.
Farrell emphasized that the audience prefers ‘relatable pairs’ who design captivating living spaces and homes.
As a seasoned traveler with a penchant for exploring Australia’s diverse landscapes, I must say that filming The Block earlier this year at Phillip Island was nothing short of breathtaking. Having grown up in Melbourne and frequented the island throughout my childhood, it was a nostalgic yet fresh experience to return as a participant on the show. The picturesque scenery and vibrant community made for an unforgettable backdrop, further solidifying Phillip Island’s reputation as one of Australia’s premier tourist destinations.
Australian branch of Channel Nine reportedly bought Island Cove Villas, located on a Victorian island, at an impressive price tag of AUD$9.5 million.
Located approximately 2.5 hours away from Melbourne, this location boasts nine houses, a shared swimming pool, a barbecue area, a tennis court, and a kids’ playground.
The Block continues Tuesday at 7.30pm on Channel Nine and 9Now.
