The Block: Scott Cam reveals why the homes on Channel Nine's hit renovation show have struggled to sell at auction

As a die-hard fan of The Block for two decades now, I can’t help but feel a mix of emotions as I read about Scott Cam’s advice to future contestants. With a twinkle in my eye, I remember the countless hours I’ve spent glued to my screen, cheering on the teams and dreaming of that life-changing profit.

Scott Cameron offers guidance for potential competitors aiming to win big on Channel Nine’s popular show, The Block.

For a successful sale of their homes on the show, Blockheads should focus on renovations that appeal to potential buyers rather than personal preferences, according to the 61-year-old host who’s been at it for two decades.

Last year, during a somewhat contentious season of The Block, House 2 didn’t sell at its asking price of $2.97 million because it fell short of the reserve price. Following this, Cam voiced his thoughts on the matter.

Leah and Ash Milton, commonly known as “Blockheads,” successfully sold their renovated property for a staggering $3.125 million four months following the finale of The Block in November.

On Monday, as the 20th anniversary of the popular reality show approaches, Cam openly shared his thoughts on what he believed the 2023 contestants might have done incorrectly.

Last year, houses faced some challenges, according to a TV expert who spoke with news.com.au. The issues included kitchens that were either too tiny or ill-designed, making them difficult to navigate.

Instead, he emphasized that Blockheads should avoid personalizing homes with their unique style or flair.

‘[It’s] madness,’ he added, ‘They’re not going to live in it.’

Real estate expert Shelly Craft concurred, offering her own constructive critique regarding the strategies employed by the latest participants on The Block.

She explained to the publication that within the renovation industry, there are essentially two distinct approaches: either refurbishing a property to sell it (flipping) or customizing a place for one’s own family. These are the primary methods of renovation.

As a devoted observer, it strikes me that some participants might overlook the reality of their limited space when faced with an abundance of fantastic products. Their desire to cram everything into a single dwelling can be quite overpowering for a family seeking a comfortable, homely environment – a simple residence to call their own.

Kristy and Brett’s House 3 was another of the reno’s from 2023 that got a disappointing result.

Starting the auction with a minimum selling price of $2,970,000, it ultimately sold for $3,035,000, resulting in a small profit of $65,000 for the Blockheads.

Giants Gian and Steph left with smiles on their faces after successfully selling their property for an impressive $5 million. This sale brought them $100,000 as prize money and pocketed them a substantial profit of approximately $1.65 million.

As a lifestyle enthusiast, I’m thrilled to share that you won’t want to miss the upcoming episode of our popular home transformation series! It airs on Monday, so mark your calendars for a dose of inspiration and excitement.

A recently unveiled sneak peek indicates that the upcoming season of Nine, celebrating its 20th anniversary at Phillip Island, will be disrupted by a series of baby-related conflicts.

In the sneak peek, Blockhead Haydn, aged 37, receives an urgent phone call from his workmate at the very moment the construction site’s tension escalates.

Upon discovering that his girlfriend is experiencing premature labor, the IT manager from Melbourne seems quite taken aback by this unexpected development.

As Haydn appears noticeably stunned, it’s evident that host Scott Cam is thrilled upon hearing about the baby nicknamed “Baby Blockhead.”

‘I’m gonna be an Uncle!’ he exclaims.

Following the announcement that a popular series might feature a relationship dissolution before its conclusion this year, according to an informant, a producer has also revealed that one production team has decided to quit after only five weeks.

According to a confidential informant within the Channel Nine remodeling project, it’s possible that at least one couple might decide to part ways prior to the auction, as reported by Daily Mail Australia on Wednesday.
