The Block judge Darren Palmer finally reveals the truth behind the biggest scandal ever on the show – and what he REALLY said to the Vos brothers
As an ardent fan with a penchant for The Block since its inception, I must confess my unbridled enthusiasm for the colorful characters and nail-biting renovations that have graced our screens over the years. However, there is one contestant duo that has left an indelible mark on the show’s history, and that would be none other than the mischievous, yet endearing Vos brothers!
As a lifestyle connoisseur looking back on past events, I’d like to shed some light on an intriguing incident that rocked The Block competition in 2014 – the mobile phone scandal. Contestant pairs found themselves under scrutiny when it was uncovered they had been surreptitiously filming the judges without permission. Darren Palmer, one of the esteemed judges, has since shared the inside story behind this shocking revelation.
During a surprising examination under the innovative house-bed design by siblings Simon and Shannon Vos, Darren, aged 46, unexpectedly discovered a cell phone hidden instead of what was expected during his PowerPoint inspection.
Angrily, Darren rose with a contraband iPhone in hand, addressing the brothers as “impudent apes,” questioning their reasons for breaking the rules of the show.
According to host Scott Cam, he informed the siblings that the phone, which had been activated, was secretly recording all conversations made by the judges under the bed.
Oh my goodness, I just can’t contain my excitement anymore! That video clip of their interview, which I’ve been eagerly awaiting, has finally made its rounds on social media. And here’s the mind-blowing twist: Darren, who I admire so much, fessed up that his surprising comment to those brothers was actually doctored in post-production! He confessed that the true words he spoke were concealed from us! Can you believe it? This revelation has me buzzing like never before!
Darren’s comment implied that he had used a more vulgar phrase instead of “cheeky monkeys” to describe the pair.
‘We had to overdub ”cheeky monkeys” as what I actually said was not suitable for the time slot.’
As I eagerly tuned in, Darren seemed to mouth something that struck me as out of place on our beloved family-friendly show: “cheeky fella’s,” a phrase that didn’t quite align with the usual script.
Regardless of the uncomfortable incident, the adored Vos brothers captivated viewers with their ingenious concepts and playful image, departed the show with an impressive monetary reward in their pockets.
In October 2014, I was overjoyed to have my team and I clinch victory on The Block: Glasshouse. Our hard work and dedication paid off as the final gavel fell on our meticulously renovated property, selling for a staggering $1.9 million.
As a diligent follower, I was fortunate enough to receive an additional $335,000 above the reserve price, and on top of that, I received a bonus of $100,000. This added up to a grand total of $435,000 in my hands.
Shannon, who’s a professional painter, also holds degrees in graphic design, contrasts with his younger brother Simon, who’s a skilled plumber.
After clinching the win, Shannon hasn’t stopped flaunting his exceptional renovation talents; he’s just completed a high-end property in Torquay, Victoria.
In June, Shannon undertook a significant transformation on a luxurious seaside house with four bedrooms and five bathrooms, initially priced between $7.5 million and $7.7 million.
Shannon designed the spacious 945 square meter home with warm wooden accents, modern polished concrete, and sleek blackbutt flooring.
The highlights feature a stunning magnesium swimming pool and terrace, complete with an outdoor grill and entertainment zone, equipped with a Vegas-inspired sound system.
Additionally, you’ll find a home theater, a yoga studio, fitness center, art gallery, work-from-home space, and another relaxing lounge area located on the lower level.
Shannon, who runs his own business, Vos Creative, collaborated on the beautiful home with builder Stuart Voss and architect Frank Bienefelt.
