The Block fans divided after judges make a dramatic change on the show: 'Are we being punk'd?'

As a proud and long-time fan of The Block, I find myself caught in the whirlwind of opinions following the recent change in terminology suggested by Shaynna Blaze and Darren Palmer. Being born and raised in the Southern United States, where the term “master bedroom” is as common as sweet tea on a hot summer day, this debate has struck a chord with me.

Supporters of The Block found themselves at odds following the unexpected alteration to the popular series during the room unveiling on Sunday, as the judges took an unusual action.

As a die-hard fan, I found myself utterly captivated by the stir caused when judge Shaynna Blaze proposed a refreshing twist: abandoning the traditional label of “master bedroom.”

Some viewers applauded the innovation while others claimed that the change was unnecessary.

The judges decided to phase out using the terms ‘master bedroom’ and ‘master ensuite’, as they perceived these phrases to carry undertones of both sexism and colonialism.

Instead they thought the termĀ ‘main bedroom and main en suite’ would be more appropriate.

On Sunday, Shaynna proposed an idea and pondered if the term “master bedroom” appears somewhat antiquated nowadays.

Let me clarify something for today. We’re currently in the primary bedroom, and this is its attached bathroom, often referred to as the master suite. However, I thought it would be more inclusive to simply call it the primary ensuite instead.

‘But do you think that’s the right term to use these days?,’ she asked.

In response, Judge Darren Palmer expressed, “I sense undercurrents of colonialism and sexism here. Personally, I prefer to call it the ‘master bedroom,’ but if it doesn’t bring comfort to someone and we have the power to alter it, let’s make the change.”

After the show aired some fans took to social media to complain about the change.

As someone who values inclusivity and diversity, I find myself questioning the need for such terminology as “master” and “main.” One online commentator eloquently expressed this sentiment when they said, “It’s just a bathroom, after all.” Their point underscores the importance of using language that is accessible and welcoming to everyone.

As a devoted admirer, I couldn’t help but chime in on the discussion about the renovation. However, the comment that the term “master” – denoting main or principal – is sexist seemed a bit far-fetched to me. Frankly, it feels like we might be getting trolled.

It’s hard to believe that someone could honestly take offense at terms like “master bedroom” or “ensuite,” a different person remarked, further stating, ‘Don’t they have better things to worry about?’

‘Seems like a mountain out of a molehill kind of deal,’ said another.

Nevertheless, certain Block supporters justified the modification, acknowledging that terms like ‘master’ were antiquated.

‘The term master bedroom comes from slavery, when men were in power,’ said one.

Another person stated that names and labels often evolve over time, which they find unremarkable. They believe that “primary” or “main” are common and natural terms that don’t warrant much attention.

One fan, who supported the change, said they ‘doubted’ that anyone was actually ‘offended’ by the term ‘master bedroom’.

In my book, constantly striving for improvement and using inclusive language is simply part of living a well-rounded life. After all, we’re all in this together!

Simultaneously, numerous spectators noticed a common practice in American reality TV series about real estate, where they refer to the largest bedroom as the ‘main’ or ‘primary’ bedroom instead.

‘Master is definitely not PC over there due to their history with slavery,’ commented a fan.

Another said: ‘House Hunters (U.S) stopped using ‘master’ a while ago. It’s interesting they [on The Block] are discussing this now.’
