The 'billion dollar brand' supposedly eyeing a Formula 1 return

As a long-time follower of the rollercoaster that is Formula 1, I can’t help but feel a sense of nostalgia every time Rich Energy starts stirring up rumors about a return to the sport. It’s like watching an old friend who keeps promising they’ve turned over a new leaf, only for them to show up at your doorstep with a bottle of questionable-looking energy drink and a wild story that sounds too good to be true.

The much-loved ex-sponsor of the Formula 1 team is subtly suggesting a possible comeback, but it’s important to note that all previous speculations about their return have led nowhere except for some intriguing posts on their social media platforms.

Rich Energy’s Formula 1 journey concluded prematurely during the 2019 season. Their partnership with Haas F1 Team, which raised eyebrows from the beginning, turned sour and culminated in a series of humorous outbursts by the company’s founder and CEO, William Storey. One unforgettable moment was the iconic Haas milkfloat incident.

But since the start of the 2021 season, Storey has been teasing a return to the sport.

He talked about the possibility of Rich Energy entering Formula 1 as the eleventh team. This could happen through the purchase of an existing team, and they might also reappear as the title sponsor. He hinted at a completed deal by likening it to the “most remarkable comeback since Lazarus.”

Rich Energy eyeing Formula 1 return?

In due time, he mentioned that an arrangement was set up, though it couldn’t be disclosed until the year 2022, which was then referred to as ‘the following season’.

Keep in mind, although no reliable news outlet reported these conversations, there was still a lot of buzz about it on social media due to the negative image associated with him and the team after their 2019 Haas fiasco. Plus, rumors swirled that they were potential buyers of Force India back in 2018 as well.

As a gaming enthusiast, even though you won’t find that specific brand racing in the Formula 1 scene just yet, that British entrepreneur is back at it, stirring up the racing world once more.

Mentioning a assertion about Rich Energy being a significant billion-dollar brand, Storey expressed his aspirations to collaborate with renowned designer Adrian Newey, who is planning to conclude his partnership with Red Bull by the end of the year.

As a diehard enthusiast, I’ve always been unafraid to take jabs at Red Bull, and despite their overwhelming dominance in Formula 1 since 2022, my approach remains the same.

From what we understand, the Rich Energy Formula 1 team, which does not actually exist, is not included in the group reportedly courting Adrian Newey’s expertise.

Remember, Storey consistently expresses skepticism about the potential success of the frequently debated Andretti entry, even though it’s a valid entry with significant potential to contribute positively to Formula 1.

At some stage, he shared a tweet from Mario Andretti and told Michael to “take your place, lad,” which suggested that Rich Energy were leading in the lineup, ready to introduce their own program to the Formula 1 scene (though it was all secret at the time).

He was unsurprisingly glad to learn that their entry was rejected for 2026.

The availability of Rich Energy itself remains a major question, just as it has been since the Haas deal was announced in 2018. Storey’s other supposed business ventures, which include Wolf Data Systems and Wolf Jerky, are also clouded with uncertainty and suspicion.

The subject of Rich Energy and Storey has become somewhat of a meme in Formula 1 circles online.

Unfortunately, a significant aspect of any sport lies in its entertaining nature, and Storey’s team undeniably delivers this excitement wherever they venture. However, it seems unlikely that they will return to Formula 1 in the near future.
