The Biggest Frustration Candace Cameron Bure Has About Christian Characters On TV: ‘It’s The Worst’

A few years ago, actress Candace Cameron Bure—best known for her role in Full House—made headlines when she switched from working with Hallmark to Great American Family. She’s always been vocal about her faith, and it appears this decision was partly driven by a desire to create more content centered around religious themes. Bure has expressed concerns about how Christianity is represented in television and film.

The actress discussed the topic openly on The Candace Cameron Bure Podcast with Madison Prewett. After Prewett, who appeared on The Bachelor, mentioned how Christianity can be misrepresented on reality television, the podcast host enthusiastically agreed, stating:

I’m really disappointed with how Christians are often portrayed in movies and TV. Usually, these characters are awful people who misuse the Bible to justify hurting others. That’s why I focus on making films that avoid these negative stereotypes.

It’s challenging for TV and movie writers to accurately portray any group of people, like Christians, with just one character. It’s easy to lose the complexities of real life and fall into stereotypes when you try to represent everyone through a single person.

The problem is especially noticeable when characters, like those Candace Cameron Bure discusses, aren’t simply portrayed as flawed, but as genuinely malicious people who misuse their faith to hurt others.

I totally get what Madison Prewett was saying. She pointed out that if what the media shows of Christians is true – either people using faith as an excuse to do anything they please, or being overly critical and judgmental – then she wouldn’t want to be associated with that kind of faith either. It really resonated with me because it feels like a fair point.

Candace Cameron Bure seems to be working to redefine her image. Beyond her role as Chief Creative Officer at GAF, where she’s made family-friendly and faith-based holiday films like Timeless Tidings of Joy, she also produced the 2024 Christian drama Unsung Heroes. While critics had mixed reactions to the film—which tells the true story of the band For King + Country—audiences loved it, as shown by its high score on Rotten Tomatoes’ Popcornmeter.

The actress has been doing a lot of self-reflection this year, recently sharing how her faith helps her stay grounded despite the pressures of Hollywood. She’s always been open about her beliefs, explaining that her faith is central to her identity.

I’m really excited for Candace Cameron Bure! It sounds like she’s staying super busy, and she’s got a really cool project coming up – she’s filming a movie, A Sweet Christmas Anniversary, with Cameron Mathison! What makes it extra special is they’re actually shooting on location in Salzburg, Austria, which is a first for her, apparently. I can’t wait to see how it turns out!

Candace Cameron Bure has been acting since she was young, but she shared that she’s never filmed a movie in Europe before. She’s thrilled to be working on the third Home Sweet Christmas film and sees it as another chance to offer positive representations of Christianity in media.
