The film titled “The Substance” was crafted by Coralie Fargeat, renowned for her work on the action thriller “Revenge”. In this production, Demi Moore, nominated three times for a Golden Globe Award, portrays Elisabeth Sparkle – a once-famous movie star seeking rejuvenation. Her quest leads her to illegally obtain a drug that promises youth and enhancement, but instead, she experiences unforeseen and lethal consequences.

Actress Margaret Qualley, known for her roles in “Kinds of Kindness” and “Maid”, has been added to the cast, portraying Sue. It’s interesting to note that Sue is a younger, more beautiful character who Elisabeth Moss’s character transforms into. Moreover, Dennis Quaid, Edward Hamilton Clark, Gore Abrams, Oscar Lesage, and several other talented actors are also part of the ensemble cast.

This year, during the 77th Cannes Film Festival in May, The Movie made its first appearance on the big screen. Four months afterward, audiences got to see it in theaters. Both critics and viewers appreciated this horror film that explores bodily themes, often commending it for its captivating narrative and convincing performances.

We provided some critic reviews below via Rotten Tomatoes:

Fargeat delivers a macabre, funny, tragic, absurd and grotesque Grand Guignol of butts and guts; a bonkers and brutal “beauty horror” that elevates the genre to a hysterically unprecedented heights.

Katie Walsh

It’s demented and absurd in the best way possible.

Katie Rife

It’s absolutely full of moments of really full-on — and I mean REALLY full-on — theatrical gasp-inducing horror that makes you go [GASP].

Mark Kermode
