The Big Bang Theory` Secret Exposed
In the series titled “Georgie & Mandy’s First Marriage“, we find a seamless connection with the popular show “Young Sheldon“, as this new sitcom follows directly after the events portrayed in the finale of its predecessor. This is consistent, given that “The Big Bang Theory“, set decades later, provides explanations for some aspects while leaving others with noticeable plot gaps. For instance, the character of older Sheldon Cooper (Jim Parsons) fails to mention Dr. John Sturgis (Wallace John), who played a significant role in his upbringing, and there’s also the puzzling omission of Pastor Jeff Difford (Matt Hobby), particularly when it comes to the older Mary Cooper (Laurie Metcalf). However, a recent episode of “Georgie & Mandy” may shed light on these mysteries.
Mary Might Have Cut Ties With Pastor Jeff
Following George Sr.’s (Lance Barber) passing, it appeared as though Mary (Zoe Perry) underwent a transformation. She seemed to grow more calloused and disillusioned. With their son Sheldon (Iain Armitage) departing for college, Georgie (Montana Jordan) moving out to start his own family, and Missy (Raegan Revord) becoming a challenging teenager that Mary struggled to manage, she failed to address her grief properly and instead withdrew into solitude.
During her tenure at the church, Mary underwent a significant transformation in her behavior. She was often irritable and resentful, frequently clashing with Audrey, Georgie’s mother-in-law. Their interactions were marked by subtle, indirect hostilities. It seems that Mary was experiencing profound loneliness, but she refused to lean on the one individual who had always been there for her. The first season’s sixteenth episode, titled “Baby Fight,” offers a glimpse into how strained Mary and Pastor Jeff’s relationship had become.
In this particular episode, there’s a disagreement between Georgie and Mandy (Emily Osment) regarding expanding their family. While Georgie yearns for more children, Mandy is hesitant due to her career commitments and isn’t certain if or when she wants more kids. Frustrated by the predicament, Georgie decides to contribute some used baby garments at a nearby church.
Before his arrival, Mary was already present, handing Pastor Jeff a stack of checks to sign, an occurrence that brings both characters into the spin-off series again. Jeff grumbles about the numerous checks, wishing he could delegate signing them to Mary, but she playfully suggests this would save him time. However, his refusal hints at mistrust, which visibly angers Mary.
Upon Georgie’s arrival, Mary expresses concern over his wellbeing. Pastor Jeff suspects he may be encountering difficulties in their private life and suggests his marriage counseling expertise. However, Mary dismisses the idea of confiding in Pastor Jeff regarding such matters, implying that this is an area where he lacks experience or understanding. Even though the older Mary might have harbored such thoughts, she would never have publicly voiced her skepticism about the man she admired and relied upon so deeply.
Mary communicates to Georgie that she and George (Lance Barber) faced comparable difficulties regarding having additional children. Pastor Jeff intervenes yet another time to remind Mary of the guidance he provided during those hardships. “Indeed I did,” she responds, showing her skepticism again with a roll of her eyes.
Though Mary may not have wavered in her belief in God, it’s possible that she is channeling her frustration towards Pastor Jeff, who represents a tangible connection to her faith. She can’t be upset with God, but she might find it easier to express her anger toward him.
Why Pastor Jeff Isn’t In ‘The Big Bang Theory’
Although Pastor Jeff wasn’t featured on “The Big Bang Theory” because the character hadn’t been created yet, there’s also a plausible narrative explanation for this. Over time, Mary found Pastor Jeff less inspiring for her faith. Despite his commitment to the church, he had family obligations, including a wife and child. It’s possible that he grew tired of trying to reach Mary, who became increasingly stubborn.
It seemed as though Mary may have begun to harbor feelings of resentment towards Pastor Jeff, using him as a target for her sorrow. She required someone to hold accountable for the tragic event that befell George and her loved ones. Blaming God wasn’t an option for her, nor could she abandon her faith. Instead, Mary directed her resentment towards Pastor Jeff. It’s worth noting that he distanced himself from her when he learned that Georgie was pregnant out of wedlock, which meant excluding her and her family from the church. Although Mary may have eventually forgiven him for this action, she has never forgotten the hurt.
From the portrayal in the show “Georgie & Mandy’s First Marriage”, it seems Pastor Jeff has transformed into a rather bothersome supervisor for Mary. In earlier installments, their disputes escalate frequently, which might indicate a change in their daily work relationship. Particularly in episode 10 titled “A House Divided,” when Pastor Jeff attempts to resolve a conflict between Mary and Audrey in his office, he finds himself having to calm Mary down on several occasions. His demeanor reveals his discomfort with her harsh words and behavior, which appears out of character for the more amiable Mary we knew from “The Big Bang Theory”. Over time, it seems she has grown sharper-tongued.
Over the course of time, it seems quite plausible that the bond between Mary and Pastor Jeff gradually transformed from friendly to professional. In fact, there’s a chance that Pastor Jeff may relocate with his family, possibly severing all ties with Mary due to the deterioration of their relationship. It is also conceivable that Mary might shift her church attendance, perhaps driven by too many bittersweet recollections from her previous place of worship.
The relationship between Mary and Pastor Jeff depicted in “Georgie & Mandy’s First Marriage,” especially in episode 16, could possibly be the reason why Mary never brings up Pastor Jeff at all in “The Big Bang Theory.” This same reasoning might also account for his absence from the wedding of Sheldon and Amy (Mayim Bialik) in the show’s finale. However, the presence of Mark Hamill offers a different explanation as well.
The key aspect in Mary’s connection with the church revolves around her unwavering belief, despite it being deeply intertwined with a profound skepticism towards life overall. Regrettably, it seems that Pastor Jeff might have become the individual Mary had to distance herself from, so she could ultimately find closure and move forward. This may have been someone she needed to blame, rather than abandoning her faith in God.
