The best thrillers to watch on Netflix this August

As a seasoned gamer with a penchant for thrilling adventures, both virtual and cinematic, I can wholeheartedly vouch for the trio of nail-biting Netflix picks this summer. Having navigated through countless digital landscapes, I’ve learned to appreciate the art of storytelling that keeps me on the edge of my seat, and these three titles do just that!

As autumn approaches, there’s still ample time left for enjoying extended nights, and what could be more refreshing than spending some of it indulging in Netflix’s top-notch suspenseful flicks?

Each month, we carefully select several gripping thrillers from Netflix that match the present seasonal trends. Occasionally, these choices complement an imminent premiere. Alternatively, some selections could be fresh additions to their streaming service.

For this season finale, we’ve prepared an engaging mini-mystery involving a missing individual, a thrilling drama centered on a 911 operator saving the day from a call center, and Quentin Tarantino’s chilly western murder mystery – all waiting to be solved by you as you wrap up your summer.

Editor’s pick: Hateful Eight

The best thrillers to watch on Netflix this August

Director: Quentin Tarantino
Cast: Samuel L. Jackson, Walton Goggins, Kurt Russell

As a seasoned detective with years of experience under my belt, I have learned to read between the lines and uncover the truth hidden beneath the surface. With that said, let me tell you about a peculiar case that has always stuck in my mind: Three lawmen, a woman on the run from justice, and a stagecoach driver walk into a clothing store during a fierce snowstorm. Inside the shop, there’s a cowboy, a hangman, and a man named Bob, who is taking care of things while the owners are away. It quickly becomes apparent that these individuals all have ties to each other’s pasts, and at least one of them is not what they seem. As I delved deeper into the mystery, I found myself in a tangled web of deceit, where every clue pointed to someone else as the potential culprit. It was a game of cat and mouse, with each new revelation leading me further down a rabbit hole that seemed impossible to escape from. In the end, I managed to unmask the wolves in this intricate puzzle, bringing justice to those wronged and restoring peace to the town. This case taught me that appearances can be deceiving, and that sometimes the most obvious suspects are not always the ones responsible for the crime. It’s a lesson I carry with me to this day as I continue to solve mysteries and bring truth to light.

Title “The Hateful Eight” is deserved due to its collection of characters, all tainted by varying degrees of deceit and brutality. Akin to ’60s Western shows like “Bonanza” and “The Virginian”, Tarantino’s chamber drama set in a specific period delivers a bloody, gloomy, and nerve-wracking tale that unfolds like an impending disaster. By the end, it won’t be about who will survive this predicament. Rather, the central query becomes, do any of these individuals deserve to? – Toussaint Egan

Missing

The best thrillers to watch on Netflix this August

Director: Nicholas D. Johnson, Will Merrick
Cast: Storm Reid, Joaquim de Almeida, Megan Suri

Among the top-notch and engaging mystery films from recent years, the captivating thriller “Missing” primarily unfolds on a computer screen. The story revolves around a young woman named June (Storm Reid), residing in Los Angeles with her mother. When her mother fails to return home after a scheduled vacation with her new boyfriend Kevin, June embarks on an intriguing quest to locate her missing parent, primarily relying on sharp online strategies.

Austen Goslin notes that Missing is remarkably accurate in portraying the nuances of online tools, unlike many films. It grasps both the constraints and possibilities of search engines, password phishing, and other technologies, subtly pushing these boundaries to create an outstanding thriller.

The Guilty

The best thrillers to watch on Netflix this August

Director: Antoine Fuqua
Cast: Jake Gyllenhaal, Christina Vidal Mitchell, Ethan Hawke

Jake Gyllenhaal is renowned for being one of the finest actors of his era, particularly recognized for his ability to portray complex characters with underlying feelings of suppressed anger and distress that seethe beneath their cold facades. This characteristic is prominent in “The Guilty“, a taut one-room crime thriller. Here, Gyllenhaal plays Joe Baylor, an LAPD officer temporarily working as a 911 operator amidst the turmoil of a forest fire that’s filling the city with smog. When he receives a distressing call from a woman (Riley Keough) who seems to have been abducted by her ex-husband (Peter Sarsgaard), Joe feels compelled to act, seeing it as an opportunity for redemption in his troubled past.

Although not receiving the same critical acclaim as the 2018 Danish film it was based on, The Guilty still offers a remarkable demonstration of Gyllenhaal’s versatility as an actor. The film effectively portrays his character’s worn-out skepticism and brief, impactful instances of emotional exposure and introspection. This gripping, shocking thriller primarily relies on its outstanding lead performance, making it a must-see for any movie enthusiast. —TE
