The can’t-miss, top-tier sci-fi movies of 2024

Rebel Moon: Chalice of Blood

Where to watch: Netflix

The best sci-fi movies of the year so far

Initially, Zack Snyder’s science fiction masterpiece on Netflix drew flak towards the end of last year due to its underdeveloped world and weak narrative. Yet, there was an exception – Snyder had previously shared that Netflix compelled him to debut a shorter, less intense version initially, before he could unveil his director’s cut which truly embodied his intended vision. As anticipated by some, with the arrival of the director’s cut, it turns out to be a completely transformed and significantly superior film.

Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga

Where to watch: For digital rental/purchase on Amazon, Apple TV

The best sci-fi movies of the year so far

The Mad Max series consistently brings something fresh and unique. The film Furiosa, though a prequel to Mad Max: Fury Road, is handled distinctly by writer and director George Miller compared to other Mad Max productions. Undeniably, it’s an exceptional action movie; the action sequences are grandiose, boisterous, and awe-inspiring, living up to the legendary narrative. However, what truly sets Furiosa apart is its storytelling, making it a remarkable addition to the sci-fi genre’s rich history.

In a captivating twist, Austen Goslin’s narrative transforms the tale of Furiosa’s life and rise to power, which echoes the timeless, embellished legends shared around fires in the desolate Wasteland. The performances by Anya Taylor-Joy as Furiosa and Chris Hemsworth as Dementus, the ruthless warlord who significantly influenced Furiosa’s destiny, are exceptional, mirroring the epic qualities inherent in the narrative. This results in Furiosa not only being one of the finest action films from the past decade but also one of the most impressive science fiction prequels ever crafted. —Austen Goslin

Mars Express

The best sci-fi movies of the year so far

In a future where humans have expanded into space and intelligent robots coexist as servitors alongside their makers, Jeremie Perin’s science fiction novel presents a vividly detailed universe teeming with creativity and mystery at every turn.

As a captivated fan, I find myself drawn into the heart of a thrilling narrative where two detectives, a thoughtful human woman grappling with her own demons and a consciousness housed in an artificial body once belonging to a deceased man, are on a quest to find a missing girl and a shadowy hacker. Intriguingly, Mars Express gradually unfolds into a labyrinthine enigma where it appears that everyone and everything is harboring secrets of their own. This enthralling tale features pulse-pounding action sequences, meticulously crafted backdrops, and a plot that transforms from a straightforward missing persons case to an astonishing revelation bordering on singularity. Mars Express is indeed an innovative sci-fi journey worth embarking upon. —Toussaint Egan

The Beast

Where to watch: Criterion Channel, or for digital rental/purchase on Amazon, Apple TV

The best sci-fi movies of the year so far

“If you haven’t seen it yet, Bertrand Bonello’s ‘The Beast’ can be thought of as a blend between ‘Cloud Atlas’ and ‘Mulholland Drive’. However, this comparison doesn’t fully capture the depth and breadth of themes the movie explores. Essentially, the story revolves around two characters, portrayed by Léa Seydoux and George MacKay, who keep encountering each other in different lifetimes, but fate keeps them apart.”

Contrary to how it may seem, “The Beast” is far from a typical fairy tale. Instead, it’s an exhilarating sci-fi journey that blends elements of historical romance with modern horror themes and a sense of impending doom in a dystopian setting. This film by Bonello takes you on a disquieting and chilling ride into a future where love can be as destructive as it is comforting, more likely to shatter your heart than heal it completely. “The Beast” isn’t merely one of the top sci-fi films of the year; it’s one of the most audacious movies of the year, full stop. –TE

The Animal Kingdom

Where to watch: Hulu, or for digital rental/purchase on Amazon/Apple TV

The best sci-fi movies of the year so far

As a captivated movie enthusiast, one of the most intriguing films I’ve encountered this year is “The Animal Kingdom.” This French science fiction drama delves into a gripping premise: a mysterious mutation causing some individuals to metamorphose into human-animal hybrids. The narrative centers around a father, skillfully portrayed by Romain Duris, and his son, Paul Kircher, as they embark on a heartrending quest to find their missing mother, who is undergoing this very transformation.

As I wrote in our best movies of the year list:

Showcasing creature designs that seamlessly integrate practical and digital techniques, boasting a heartwarming father-son bond supported by captivating lead performances, and offering an intriguing central metaphor open to various interpretations, The Animal Kingdom shines in the realm of contemporary science fiction. It delivers across all fronts, resulting in one of the most impactful films of the year, immersing audiences in a vivid world inhabited by intriguing characters.

A significant aspect of the film “The Animal Kingdom” is its portrayal of the ordinary lives of humans amidst upheaval. Despite the confusion and change in our understanding of our species, life goes on with its routine tasks such as work, school, and relationships. These everyday moments are where the essence of the movie truly resonates. —Paraphrased by AI

Dune: Part Two

Where to watch: Max, or for digital rental/purchase on Amazon, Apple TV

The best sci-fi movies of the year so far

Frank Herbert’s Dune is a timeless story serving as a warning about the flawed nature of charismatic leaders, and Denis Villeneuve’s sequel to his 2021 adaptation of the novel effectively brings this lesson to life in a chilling and awe-inspiring manner.

In the wake of his father’s demise and with the Harkonnens seizing control, Paul Atreides finds himself needing to win over the Fremen people of Arrakis. His objective is twofold: exacting revenge on the Harkonnens and reclaiming his rightful supremacy. However, he struggles internally; while resistant, he is also resigned to accepting a fate that will inevitably lead to the deaths of countless individuals, solidifying his reputation as a ruthless ruler. The upcoming movie Dune: Part Two is an enthralling spectacle that masquerades as a blockbuster, yet beneath its grandeur lies a profound cautionary tale about the dangers of fanaticism. It incites admiration and awe while simultaneously urging you to ponder over whom or what you’re truly rooting for. —TE

Alienoid: Return to the Future

Where to watch: Prime Video, Hoopla, or for digital rental/purchase on Amazon, Apple TV

The best sci-fi movies of the year so far

In the second installment of the hilariously entertaining 2022 Korean hit film, Alienoid, titled Back to the Future, we find the story continuing exactly where the initial movie ended. It offers an impeccable blend of action, laughter, and time-traveling sci-fi antics that will leave you captivated.

In these Alienoid films, we’ll try to minimize spoilers for those who missed the initial movie. The story unfolds in both the 14th and 21st centuries, focusing on two robots resembling humans, whose mission is to guard alien captives living within human hosts. However, during their journey, they unintentionally take custody of a child from the 14th century and transport her into present times.

The film is humorous yet boasts remarkable visual effects and unexpectedly intense action scenes, given its comedic focus. However, what truly sets the Alienoid series apart is its exceptional cast. Fronted by the talented Kim Tae-ri, known for her roles in “The Handmaiden” and “Space Sweepers,” she portrays a formidable pistol-wielding character from the 14th century. Kim Woo-bin assumes the role of Guard, offering a diverse performance as he transitions between various characters, while Ryu Jun-yeol plays a comical yet destined 14th century swordsman.

Back to the Future kicks off by summarizing its complex plot, a useful touch given its intricacy. Yet, it’s more than worth your time to watch these delightful films, as they exemplify the kind of widely appealing, multi-genre excitement that blockbusters can offer at their best. —PV Paraphrased

The best of the rest

Rebel Moon: Curse of Forgiveness

Where to watch: Netflix

The best sci-fi movies of the year so far

Although not as universally acclaimed as its predecessor, partially due to a more targeted narrative provided by “Chalice of Blood”, Zack Snyder’s Rebel Moon director’s cut part two remains an enjoyable sci-fi adventure. Essentially serving as a continuation rather than a full-fledged sequel, “Curse of Forgiveness” can be likened to the second half of “Seven Samurai” extended over three hours, largely because of an exceptionally extensive and epic battle that lasts over an hour and a half. If the initial Rebel Moon film was primarily focused on world creation for Snyder, then the second installment is predominantly about fulfilling those promises, offering one action-packed sequence after another, carefully resolving the storylines he established in the first movie.

Among all these tales, Jimmy’s story stands out as the most impactful. Jimmy is a robot, lent his voice by Anthony Hopkins, who was built for a royal bodyguard team following the late king’s demise. Initially, these robots were engineered as advanced weapons of destruction, but after the king’s death, they inexplicably lost their ability to inflict violence. However, throughout the initial two installments of Rebel Moon, Jimmy rediscovers a cause worth fighting for once more. This leads to an intense action sequence filled with lethal encounters, culminating in a gruesome montage towards the end of Curse of Forgiveness. If you can handle a blend of sincerity and absurdity along with your dose of grandiose sci-fi action, then Snyder’s second Rebel Moon installment is bound to captivate you, leaving you eager for more stories set in this universe.

A Quiet Place: Day One

Where to watch: Theaters

The best sci-fi movies of the year so far

As a dedicated gamer, I’ve got to admit that the first two Quiet Place films were quite engaging, but it wasn’t until John Krasinski stepped down as director and moved into an executive producer and story writer role that we saw the franchise truly shine with its exceptional entry. Taking over the director’s chair was Michael Sarnoski, known for his work on the Nicolas Cage drama “Pig.”

Sarnoski’s portrayal of an apocalyptic New York is stunningly captured, with suspense lingering around every corner and each sound resonating like impending doom. However, it’s primarily the captivating portrayal by Lupita Nyong’o as a terminally ill woman battling to live that breathes vitality into A Quiet Place Day One. This film stands out as the most personal, subdued, and heart-wrenching blockbuster of the year, making it a fitting style for the series —AG (paraphrased)

Kalki 2898 AD

Where to watch: Theaters

The best sci-fi movies of the year so far

In simple terms, the film titled “Kalki 2898 AD” is an epic blockbuster that holds the record for both the most expensive Indian film ever made and the highest-grossing Indian film of its year. Although it has been likened to “RRR” due to their shared success and grandeur, a closer look reveals they are quite dissimilar. The unique storyline of “Kalki” unfolds over an expansive timeline from 3102 BC to the year 2898 AD, featuring Hindu deities, post-apocalyptic landscapes, and a team of unlikely heroes who unite to protect a pregnant woman and her unborn child.

Although Kalki boasts impressive vehicle and weapon designs, intriguing narrative and character decisions, particularly with Prabhas’ self-absorbed bounty hunter character Bhairava, its pacing makes it challenging to follow along. The directorial and editing choices further complicate matters. It’s also important to note that the movie heavily emphasizes human brutality, so be prepared for a lot of that. Surprisingly, despite my reservations towards Kalki, I eagerly anticipate the next installment in the series. The production design is captivating, and the film concludes in a much more intriguing position than it begins. While it’s not an outstanding movie, it has the potential to become a remarkable franchise. —PV

Robot Dreams

Where to watch: Theaters

The best sci-fi movies of the year so far

As a lifelong animation enthusiast who has been eagerly following the world of cinema for decades, I was absolutely thrilled when I heard that “Robot Dreams” had been nominated for a surprise Best Animated Feature Oscar at this year’s Academy Awards. Having grown up watching classic animated films and being captivated by their magical storytelling, it was truly heartwarming to see such a unique and visually stunning piece of art finally reach wider audiences this May. The film’s imaginative take on robots and artificial intelligence resonated deeply with me as someone who has always been fascinated by the possibilities of technology and its potential impact on humanity. I can’t wait to see what other incredible animated stories will emerge in the future, but for now, “Robot Dreams” has undoubtedly left a lasting impression on me as one of the most innovative and captivating films I’ve seen in recent years.

As our colleague Petrana Radulovic put it in our list of the best movies of the year:

As a devoted admirer, I was profoundly touched by Sara Varon’s graphic novel “Robot Dreams” to such an extent that it inspired me to establish an animation studio with the aim of transforming it into a heartfelt motion picture. This captivating tale unfolds without words and revolves around a solitary canine who forms an unbreakable bond with a robot during a whimsical summer, only for life’s circumstances to ultimately drive them apart. The characters are deeply evocative, and the anthropomorphic setting is utterly endearing. Contrary to expectations, this isn’t a light-hearted, joke-filled production; rather, it’s a profoundly poignant and bittersweet film that beautifully explores the profound friendships that we may lose as life progresses. The final scenes resonate deeply, leaving an indelible mark – a testament to their powerful emotional impact.

Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes

Where to watch: Hulu, or for digital rental/purchase on Amazon, Apple TV

The best sci-fi movies of the year so far

In a twist that may surprise you, the fourth installment in the Planet of the Apes prequel series, titled Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes, appears quite gloomy on paper. However, this couldn’t be more misleading! Directed by Wes Ball, who is known for his work on The Maze Runner, this latest addition to the franchise delivers a thrilling and enjoyable experience, making it one of the most entertaining Apes movies in a long time. Unlike its predecessors, which were heavy meditations on war, conflict, and the complexities of peaceful coexistence, Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes is a fun action/adventure movie that harks back to the 90s.

The narrative centers around young ape character Noa, who embarks on a mission to rescue his abducted friends and kin. This adventure leads him through the remains of what was once a grand human civilization, offering insights into how apes have been striving to establish their own civilizations. This tale offers impressive world-building and serves as an unexpected prequel to the future portrayed in the original Planet of the Apes films. —PAR

Code 8: Part II

Where to watch: Netflix

The best sci-fi movies of the year so far

In the year 2020, a lesser-known science fiction film from Canada, backed by over 30,000 Indiegogo investors, made its debut on Netflix. The movie, titled Code 8, featured real-life cousins Robbie Amell (from Upload) and Stephen Amell (known for his role in Arrow)). This film turned out to be a massive success on the streaming platform, eventually leading to a direct-to-Netflix sequel a few years after its release. The reasons for their popularity are quite clear – the intriguing world-building and the palpable enthusiasm invested in these projects make them an engaging watch, despite minor flaws.

In the realm of Code 8, it’s been commonplace since the early 1900s that individuals possessing superpowers exist. These people were often relegated to manual labor roles due to their abilities, handling hazardous tasks. However, as the Industrial Revolution advanced and automation became the norm, society began viewing the risks associated with superpowered workers as greater than the advantages, leading to these former workers being subjected to stringent law enforcement and social marginalization. Amidst this, a young man endowed with electric powers seeks employment to cover his mother’s healthcare expenses, eventually aligning himself with a criminal gang of powered individuals intent on executing a major heist.

The Code 8 films may not have a high-quality polish, but this roughness aligns with their “grassroots passion indie” vibe. In fact, it makes the menacing robot cops stand out even more, as some resemble the Automatons from Helldivers 2, while others echo the chilling design of Boston Dynamics’ robotic dogs.

In a nutshell, the Code 8 movies blend elements of heist films, science fiction, and explorations of power dynamics. While they may not consistently reach peak quality, they are dedicated to exploring intriguing concepts – something that can be appealing in low-budget sci-fi productions. – PV

Badland Hunters

Where to watch: Netflix

The best sci-fi movies of the year so far

If you’re searching for a captivating sci-fi film that either offers deep reflections on human existence in the universe, blended with technical science aspects and visually stunning, almost ethereal imagery, or if you’re seeking high-octane action featuring Ma Dong-seok fighting foes in a post-apocalyptic wasteland, then Badland Hunters is perfect for your second choice.

A Post-Apocalyptic Adventure in the Wasteland – Badland Hunters

Justice League: Crisis on Infinite Earths Part One

Where to watch: Max

The best sci-fi movies of the year so far

The continuation of the DC Animated Movie Universe’s second phase is nearing its conclusion with the three-part Crisis on Infinite Earths saga. The first two installments have already been released, but only the first one is currently available on Max. I haven’t watched the third part yet, but I found the first one engaging within the context of DCAU projects. While I felt that the second part wasn’t as strong, I’m still eagerly anticipating when the final installment becomes accessible on the streaming platform.

As Barry Allen, I found myself navigating a mind-bending chronology in the epic saga known as Crisis on Infinite Earths Part One. This adventure dares to venture beyond the norms of DCAU storytelling and it truly delivers. I hopped from one Earth to another, encountered countless iterations of the Justice League heroes, each with their unique takes on justice. The story unravels an imminent threat – an anti-matter wave that could wipe out our multiverse. It’s a thrilling comic book ride, bolstered by an all-star voice cast (Darren Criss as Superman, Jensen Ackles as Batman, Matt Bomer as Flash, and Zachary Quinto as Lex Luthor, to name a few). Compared to other DC animated movies, this one leans more towards science fiction. It’s a rollercoaster ride you don’t want to miss!

In the gaming world, I can’t wait to dive into Part Two, where I’ll team up with Terry McGinnis from the future in Batman Beyond. And for those who are as excited as I am, keep an eye out for Part Three! It promises a poignant farewell, with the legendary Kevin Conroy delivering his final performance as Batman, along with Mark Hamill’s last hurrah as the Joker.
