New Movies Streaming This Week and Weekend

Here are five new movies you can enjoy at home this weekend – you can rent them on demand or watch them for free on streaming services.

Troll 2

I was completely captivated by Troll last year, and I’m so excited for the next chapter! It seems a team of experts – scientists, politicians, and the military – have to come together again when the giant troll wakes up while being held captive. They’re racing against time to discover an old mystery, because this troll is causing absolute chaos all over Norway, even attacking a ski resort! It sounds like a wild ride to save the country.

Directed by Roar Uthaug, Troll 2 became available to stream exclusively on Netflix on December 1.

Where to watch Troll 2: Netflix.

Oh. What. Fun.

In the new Christmas comedy, Oh. What. Fun., Michelle Pfeiffer stars as Claire, a dedicated wife and mother known for creating perfect holiday celebrations. After her family accidentally leaves her behind on a trip she organized, Claire decides she’s had enough and sets out to teach them a lesson, leading to a chaotic scramble to save Christmas and get her home.

I’m really excited about Oh. What. Fun., the new film directed by Michael Showalter! It’s got an amazing cast – Felicity Huffman, Chloë Grace Moretz, Denis Leary, Eva Longoria, and Jason Schwartzman all star in it. And the best part? You can start streaming it on December 3rd!

Where to watch Oh. What. Fun.: Amazon Prime.

The Wailing

The horror film The Wailing, a Spanish-French-Argentine production, tells the story of three women across different eras who are haunted by a mysterious supernatural force. This entity announces its arrival with a terrifying wail. While the women can’t see what’s tormenting them—it only appears on camera—a documentary filmmaker sets out to discover how their experiences are connected.

Starting December 5th, you’ll be able to watch Pedro Martín-Calero’s film, The Wailing, on demand at home.

Where to watch The Wailing: Amazon Prime, Fandango at Home, Apple TV.

Tron: Ares

I’m really excited about the newest Tron movie! It’s the third one, following Tron: Legacy from 2010, and it’s all about this intense competition between two big tech companies. They’re both searching for something called the “Permanence Code” – basically, a way to make their digital creations real. But things get seriously interesting when this AI program, Ares, starts to become self-aware during a risky operation. It sounds like a wild ride!

Joachim Rønning directed Tron: Ares, which features Jared Leto, Evan Peters, Greta Lee, and Jeff Bridges. You can now stream the movie at home on demand, starting December 2nd.

Where to watch Tron: Ares: Amazon Prime, Fandango at Home, Apple TV.

Jay Kelly

The movie Jay Kelly follows a famous actor and his manager as they unexpectedly travel across Europe. During their trip, the actor reflects on his life, dealing with the downsides of fame and confronting past regrets about his family, love life, and friendships.

I’m so excited for Noah Baumbach’s new movie! It’s got an amazing cast – George Clooney, Adam Sandler, Billy Crudup, and Laura Dern – and I heard it’s coming to Netflix on December 5th. I can’t wait to watch it!

Movies to Watch if You Love Wicked

Maleficent (2014)

Disney’s Maleficent retells the story of Sleeping Beauty from the villain’s perspective. This epic fantasy film, filled with stunning visual effects, fairies, dragons, and a seemingly perfect kingdom, reveals the tragic history of the misunderstood Mistress of All Evil. The movie focuses on her surprising connection with young Aurora and shows how she became the character everyone fears.

The School for Good and Evil (2022)

In The School for Good and Evil, two best friends find their bond challenged when they’re sent to a magical school that divides students into either the path of ‘Good’ or ‘Evil’. Inspired by the 2013 fantasy novel, the story questions what truly defines good and evil, while also celebrating friendship, loyalty, accepting yourself, and the idea of fate. While critics weren’t impressed with the story, they did enjoy the film’s stunning visuals. If you’re looking for a visually captivating and slightly over-the-top fantasy adventure similar to Wicked, this movie might be perfect for a cozy night in.

Wonka (2023)

While Wonka and Wicked don’t share a similar storyline—and Wonka‘s main character is quite different from the witches in Wicked—they both offer fantastical musical experiences. Wonka doesn’t focus on big moral lessons like Wicked, though it does touch on the dangers of greed. Both films are visually stunning, large-scale prequels based on popular stories from our childhoods. If you’re looking for a magical adventure, Wonka provides a delightful escape.

Frozen (2013)

Similar to the story of Elphaba and Glinda in Wicked, Disney’s Frozen features two sisters, Anna and Elsa, who become estranged because of Elsa’s magical powers. Like the manipulative character in Wicked, a charming outsider in Frozen stirs up fear and turns the kingdom against Elsa. Ultimately, though, the bond between the sisters and a message of acceptance prevail. Musically, “Let It Go” is comparable to “Defying Gravity,” though with a colder, icier theme—and notably, Frozen stars Idina Menzel, who originally played Elphaba!

Stardust (2007)

Blending the charm of early 2000s romantic comedies with stunning visuals and a grand, sweeping story, Stardust is easily one of the best fantasy films of recent years. Adapted from Neil Gaiman’s novel, the movie follows a young man’s journey into a magical world to capture a falling star – who happens to be a beautiful young woman. And unlike some fantasy villains, the wicked witch in Stardust is genuinely evil.

Enchanted (2007)

Looking for a fun and magical musical? I highly recommend Disney’s Enchanted from the 2000s! The songs, with lyrics by Stephen Schwartz (who also wrote for Wicked) and music by Alan Menken, are some of the catchiest and best fairytale songs Disney has made in years. Just think of songs like “That’s How You Know,” “Happy Working Song,” and “True Love’s Kiss”—they’re instantly recognizable and beloved!

Mirror Mirror (2012)

While it might not be the very best, Tarsem Singh’s Mirror Mirror is a truly beautiful fantasy film. This version of the classic Snow White story is incredibly colorful and lavish, with stunning costumes and a grand, polished look. And even though it’s not a musical for most of the movie, it ends with a big, energetic Bollywood-style musical number, which is a fun surprise!

Shrek 2 (2004)

The story of an outsider with a unique appearance arriving in a stunning kingdom, only to be deceived by a seemingly charming but actually villainous magical character? That’s not just the plot of Wicked, it’s also the heart of the 2004 animated hit Shrek 2. In fact, Shrek 2 is a truly excellent modern fairy tale film. Its vibrant world and themes of being yourself, embracing differences, and accepting others align perfectly with the messages in Wicked. And while it’s not a musical, Shrek 2 features many memorable musical moments that are just as catchy as the famous song “Defying Gravity.”

Into the Woods (2014)

Like many Disney princess movies, Into the Woods puts a unique spin on familiar stories – in this case, several classic fairy tales like Cinderella. While it’s a bit darker in tone, the film successfully blends thought-provoking themes with beautiful visuals, impressive sets, and memorable songs performed by well-known characters. It’s based on the popular and award-winning Broadway show by Stephen Sondheim.

The Wizard of Oz (1939)

No list of classic fantasy films would be complete without mentioning The Wizard of Oz. It’s a truly iconic movie, and it even inspired Wicked! With its colorful scenes, unforgettable characters, and heartwarming story, The Wizard of Oz has been loved by audiences for generations. If you’re looking for a grand, beautiful, and uplifting musical experience, this is the perfect choice. Get ready to be transported – just press play!
