People are still loving the first film in the action series starring Denzel Washington. The popular movie is currently having another surge in popularity, now on Netflix.
FlixPatrol reports that The Equalizer 3 is currently appearing on the Top 10 lists in multiple countries where it’s available on Netflix. As of today, it’s ranked highest in Vietnam at No. 7, followed by No. 8 in Thailand, and No. 9 in both Hong Kong and the Philippines.
The Equalizer Is Denzel Washington’s Only Franchise
As Washington D.C.’s main network television drama, The Equalizer is a remake of the popular 1980s action series. The show stars an actor playing Robert McCall, a character first made famous by Edward Woodward in the original series.
The first film featured Denzel Washington as a retired Marine and intelligence officer who was pulled back into action to rescue a young girl from Russian human traffickers. In the second film, he seeks vengeance after a friend is killed.
In the last movie of the series, McCall has settled into a peaceful existence in Sicily, but he’s forced back into action when he decides to help his new friends and protect them from the local mafia’s control.
Denzel Washington worked again with director Antoine Fuqua on all three Equalizer films – released in 2014, 2018, and 2023 – after previously collaborating on Training Day. Critics generally liked the trilogy, and each movie earned around $190 million at the global box office.
Originally, The Equalizer 3 was planned as the last movie in the series. Director Antoine Fuqua said another film would only be made if Denzel Washington decided to reprise his role. However, Washington has recently shared that he is considering continuing the series.
The actor shared in November 2024 that he’s realized the Equalizer movies aren’t just popular with audiences – they’re personally meaningful to him because they give viewers a sense of empowerment. He explained that people want to see him take down the villains, saying, ‘They feel like they can’t handle the bad guys themselves, so they want me to do it for them.’ He playfully added, ‘And I’m happy to oblige! Just tell me who they are, and I’ll take care of it!’
We don’t know yet when The Equalizer 4 and 5 will be made, as filming hasn’t been scheduled. Denzel Washington is currently working on several other projects, including a new movie for Netflix with director Antoine Fuqua, based on the story of the historical figure Hannibal.
I’m so excited about Washington’s new movie! He just finished filming Here Comes the Flood for Netflix, and the cast is incredible – Robert Pattinson, Daisy Edgar-Jones, Danai Gurira, Sean Harris, Moisés Arias, and Justin Kirk are all in it. It’s a heist movie, and I can’t wait to see it!
Denzel Washington is also confirmed to appear in Black Panther 3, a project he revealed he’d be joining in November 2024. He stated this would be his next film after Sinners.
