The Best Horror Franchise Of The 21st Century Is Dominating Streaming Despite Uncertain Future

Even though it’s unclear if another movie will be made, 28 Days Later, widely considered the best horror series of the 2000s and 2010s, is currently very popular on HBO Max.

Following the success of 28 Days Later in 2002, the series continued with 28 Weeks Later in 2007, but with a new set of characters battling the Rage Virus. After a long pause, a new trilogy began in 2025 with 28 Years Later, followed by 28 Years Later: The Bone Temple in 2026. While 28 Years Later: The Bone Temple received positive reviews, its poor performance at the box office now casts doubt on whether the third film in the trilogy will be made.

Despite not being available in the US, both 28 Years Later and 28 Days Later are performing well internationally on HBO Max. 28 Years Later is currently the most-watched movie in 14 countries – including Croatia, Hungary, Poland, and Serbia – and 28 Days Later is right behind it in second place in those same countries.

With its unique visuals from director Danny Boyle and a compelling script by Alex Garland, 28 Days Later quickly became a standout horror film. While the infected aren’t technically zombies – they’re still living – the movie is credited with breathing new life into the zombie genre. The film’s terrifying, fast-moving infected are frightening, but the story suggests something even more horrifying is at play. Adding to its impact, 28 Days Later features memorable characters like Jim (Cillian Murphy) and Frank (Brendan Gleeson), and Jim even reappears in the ending of 28 Years Later: The Bone Temple.

Both 28 Days Later and its sequel have been well-received, but with some differences. 28 Days Later earned high marks from both critics (87%) and audiences (85%) on Rotten Tomatoes. 28 Years Later received more varied reviews – critics generally liked it (88%), but audiences were less enthusiastic (63%). Director Danny Boyle and writer Alex Garland reunited nearly three decades after the original film’s outbreak to create another scary and surprisingly emotional horror movie. Nia DaCosta directed the newest installment, The Bone Temple, which Garland also wrote, and it’s become the highest-rated film in the series with a 92% critics’ score and an 88% audience score.

Movie Rotten Tomatoes Critics’ Score Rotten Tomatoes Audience Score
28 Days Later (2002) 87% 85%
28 Weeks Later (2007) 73% 66%
28 Years Later (2025) 88% 63%
28 Years Later: The Bone Temple (2026) 92% 88%

News surfaced in December that a third film, 28 Years Later III, was in development with Danny Boyle writing the script and Cillian Murphy potentially returning. However, the disappointing box office results of The Bone Temple might change those plans. Despite this, the 28 Days Later series is still highly regarded by both fans and critics, and strong viewership numbers on HBO Max suggest there’s a real desire for another movie.
