The BBC’s highly-anticipated ‘80s-set crime drama is almost back: Here’s what you need to remember
Prepare yourself, as the gripping crime series “The Gold” from the BBC is about to make its comeback on our TV screens shortly! Here’s a quick summary to refresh your memory of where we left off following the conclusion of season 1.
The series, starring Hugh Bonneville from Paddington and Jack Lowden of Slow Horses, is inspired by the true events surrounding the Brink’s-Mat heist, a massive theft that occurred in the early 1980s, resulting in the loss of millions.
In early 2023, BBC One will air a continuation of The Gold, nearly two and a half years after its initial debut. The upcoming episodes will delve deeper into the police investigation, exploring possible leads about where the remaining gold might be hidden, based on various theories surrounding the original events.
What to Read Next
The police investigation remains ongoing, transforming into an intense, high-risk adventure delving into international money laundering and organized crime. In this narrative, the Brink’s-Mat Task Force pursues a thrilling series of chases as they strive tirelessly to unravel the longest and most costly inquiry ever undertaken by the Metropolitan Police.
But what happened first time around? Here we break down where things were left after season 1.
The Gold recap: What happened in season one and how did it end?
The initial series of “The Gold” focuses on the Brink’s-Mat heist of 1983 – a significant robbery that took place in the UK, ranking among its largest – where six armed individuals managed to gain access to a warehouse close to Heathrow Airport, making off with approximately £26 million in gold bullion, diamonds, and cash.
The show chronicles the happenings over a ten-year span following the incident, detailing the processing and refining of gold bars, with particular emphasis on significant characters like Kenneth Noye (portrayed by Jack Lowden), Micky McAvoy (Adam Nagaitis), Gordon Parry (Sean Harris) and Edwyn Cooper (Dominic Cooper). The Gold also explores the probe led by DCS Brian Boyce (Hugh Bonneville) and his specialized task force.
At the culmination of the initial series, several members of the gang are found guilty – even Noye himself being sentenced to 14 years due to his involvement in a plot to falsely manage stolen gold and devising a scheme to illegally evade Value-Added Tax (VAT).
Yet, events take an unexpected turn, as it’s revealed that £13 million worth of gold, which is half of the total, can’t be accounted for. It becomes clear that Nicki Jennings (Charlotte Spencer) and Tony Brightwell (Emun Elliott) discover that Cooper had only been laundering half the amount initially stolen.
Later on, Noye teases Boyce by suggesting that his actions will leave a lasting impression as they caused the police to frantically search for something that no longer exists.
Afterward, Boyce, Jennings, and Brightwell promise to return to their starting point in search of the missing piece, meanwhile, one of the robbers is spotted having a good time overseas.
