The Batman Sequel Needs to Introduce Classic Batarangs

The 2022 film The Batman delivered a remarkably realistic and emotionally resonant portrayal of the Dark Knight. While it was praised for this approach, the movie also left out some of the more traditional aspects of Batman’s history.

The 2022 film The Batman, directed by Matt Reeves, portrays a Batman who is new to his role as a crime fighter – only two years into his work as a vigilante. Because of this, the movie doesn’t feature many of the gadgets and weapons fans expect to see. However, there’s one important missing item that the next film really needs to include.

2022’s The Batman Never Featured The Dark Knight’s Classic Batarangs

Interestingly, Robert Pattinson’s Batman didn’t throw traditional batarangs in his first live-action appearance. His bat chest emblem, which he could detach and throw, served as the closest equivalent.

Shaped like a bat’s wing, this device was more of a multi-purpose tool than a weapon meant to be thrown. In The Batman, Bruce Wayne uses it to cut a cable, which saves people from a flood in Gotham Square, demonstrating its practical use.

The bat emblem seen in the 2022 film The Batman was too large to function as a throwing weapon, and it wasn’t actually used as one.

The film probably aimed to portray a young, inexperienced Batman who hadn’t yet acquired all of his signature gadgets and technology. However, the limited weaponry felt lacking for the character, especially since batarangs are usually Batman’s go-to and most frequently used tool.

As a huge Batman fan, I’ve always loved the classic batarangs – they’re just so Batman! They’ve shown up in pretty much every version of the character, from the comics to the cartoons and all the live-action movies. And honestly, even if they’re going for a more realistic, early-days take on Bruce Wayne’s journey, a bat-shaped throwing weapon feels totally natural as one of the first tools he’d develop. I’m really hoping the new sequel leans into that – it feels like a perfect opportunity!

Batarangs In The Batman – Part II Now Feels Necessary

If the sequel to The Batman focuses on Bruce Wayne’s continued development, adding batarangs could be a great way to visually represent his progress.

Including batarangs would make the action sequences even better. These throwing weapons would give Batman more options in a fight, letting him disarm enemies, break up attacks, and come up with clever new ways to win.

With the threats facing Gotham expected to increase in The Batman – Part II, batarangs could become even more crucial. As villains become more powerful, Batman will likely need to improve his equipment. This upgraded arsenal would demonstrate that Bruce Wayne has learned from his previous experiences with The Riddler and is now better prepared to protect the city.

Bringing batarangs back in the next Batman movie could be significant. It’s not just about adding a familiar weapon; it could symbolize an important step in Robert Pattinson’s development as Batman, and a key moment in Matt Reeves’ ongoing story.

The Batman – Part II is set to release on October 1st, 2027 from DC Studios.
