Matt Reeves is gradually revealing the cast for The Batman: Part 2 on X (formerly Twitter), and the group of actors he’s assembling is particularly well-chosen. New cast members include Scarlett Johansson, Sebastian Stan as Harvey Dent, Bryan Tyree Henry, Charles Dance (playing Harvey Dent’s father), Sebastian Koch, and Gil Perez-Abraham as Officer Martinez. They’ll be joining returning stars Robert Pattinson, Colin Farrell, Jeffrey Wright, Andy Serkis, and Jayme Lawson. Filming is currently happening in the UK, and the movie is scheduled to hit theaters on October 1, 2027.

Understanding the recent casting choices requires remembering what the first movie set up and where the director plans to take the story. The Batman, released in 2022, stood out as a character-driven superhero film. It presented Gotham City as a dark, gritty place and portrayed Bruce Wayne as a deeply troubled man, not just a wealthy playboy who fights crime. The film carefully crafted its world with nuanced performances, and left several storylines open-ended, making a sequel feel natural. Pattinson’s portrayal of Wayne was central to everything, and the director has stated the sequel will focus even more on Wayne’s inner life and less on traditional Batman tropes.

Honestly, the casting of Harvey Dent is what really got me excited. Stan, the actor they chose, is amazing at playing characters with hidden depths and internal struggles – think Bucky Barnes in the Marvel movies or his role in Thunderbolts. He just brings this raw energy and unpredictability to everything he does, and Harvey Dent is always a character torn between his public face and what’s going on inside. It feels like Matt Reeves isn’t just rushing to get to Two-Face; he wants to show us a Harvey Dent we actually care about before the fall. And adding Charles Dance as Harvey’s dad? That’s brilliant! Dance is a master at playing powerful guys who are secretly… unsettling. I’m already anticipating a really complex and messed-up family dynamic, and it’s going to be awesome.

Bryan Tyree Henry is a fantastic addition to the cast. He’s known for a diverse range of roles, from the show Atlanta to the blockbuster Eternals and the drama Causeway, plus a memorable part in Joker. He consistently chooses interesting roles, and his presence in a Matt Reeves film—where even smaller characters are well-developed—hints that he’ll have a significant role. Scarlett Johansson’s casting, confirmed months ago, remains a mystery; her character hasn’t been revealed, suggesting Reeves is deliberately keeping that information under wraps.

What’s interesting about the new cast members is that they aren’t necessarily big names in the superhero world. Unlike some films that rely on famous faces, Matt Reeves seems to be choosing actors based on how well they fit the characters, rather than their popularity. Also, a recent teaser showing the Batmobile with snow tires suggests part of the movie will take place in winter, hinting at a strong emphasis on setting and atmosphere as part of the story.

The director’s vision for the sequel best explains why these actors are being cast. Unlike past Batman movies that focused on Bruce Wayne’s beginnings and then introduced a series of villains, the director wants Robert Pattinson’s Batman to remain the central focus. This suggests the new characters, no matter how important, will support a story still centered on understanding Bruce Wayne’s journey.

The Batman: Part 2 opens in theaters October 1, 2027.
