The Batman director explains origins of The Penguin show, how it will flow into Part II

As a seasoned gamer and a connoisseur of both comic book lore and gritty crime dramas, I can confidently say that The Penguin TV show has piqued my interest in a way few other adaptations have. Having grown up on Batman comics and the dark, brooding atmosphere of Gotham City, I was initially skeptical about yet another spin-off series. However, having watched snippets of the show, I can’t help but be intrigued by its gritty realism and larger-than-life characters that harken back to the golden days of The Sopranos.

On Thursday, I’m excited to dive into a fresh TV adventure titled “The Penguin“. It’s a spin-off from director Matt Reeves’ 2022 film “The Batman“, but don’t get your hopes up for Bruce Wayne – this series is all about one of his formidable foes: Oswald “Oz” Cobblepot, better known as the Penguin. In our previous encounter in the movie, he was a mob enforcer working under the radar. But in this new series, I’m looking forward to seeing him make some big waves! Colin Farrell is bringing the character to life with layers of prosthetics and makeup. Can’t wait to see it!

The idea of crafting a whole TV show around a supporting character from a superhero movie sounds a little suspect, but having watched most of the show by now — I was lucky enough to get screeners — I can tell you that it’s very good, an exciting crime drama that combines the gritty realism of The Sopranos with the larger-than-life characters of…well, of Batman. Showrunner Lauren LeFranc has put together a series compelling enough to stand on its own, even though the show is going to funnel into The Batman Part II, which Reeves is working on as we speak.

According to Reeves, Lauren arrived exceptionally early. During post-production for The Batman, he and his producer friend Dylan Clark had a discussion with HBO CEO Casey Bloys and Head of Original Content Sarah Aubrey. Casey suggested that they shouldn’t keep all the major characters solely for theatrical releases, as HBO was interested in some of them too. Reeves then shared his idea for a story centered around Oz (previously underestimated after Carmine Falcone’s death), rising to power and potentially becoming a kingpin, similar to Scarface. Upon hearing this, Casey was enthusiastic, stating that they wanted to produce exactly that show.

So that’s the story of how The Penguin came to be. Lauren LeFranc was one of the first people to see The Batman behind the scenes, including the deleted scenes with the Penguin. “I wanted her to absorb everything about that and then describe to her the shape of where I wanted it to start,” Reeves said. “At the end of The Batman, you see [the Penguin] looking out over the city – and so, I said that’s where it should start and we then should see that kind of ascent and then we need it get him to this place, where he in these events is ready to join the [Part II] film.”

It seems likely that this plot point counts as a spoiler because it implies the Penguin will live through his next series, set to debut in 2026 as “The Batman Part II”, and it’s not too surprising to many of us given the storyline.

Matt Reeves hope to shoot The Batman Part II in 2025

Regarding the upcoming film, Reeves is collaborating with Mattson Tomlin on the script. “We have a strong bond over these characters,” Reeves noted. “It’s interesting; one of the reasons I enjoy co-writing is that it allows us to explore these characters collectively since we share a friendship through them, in addition to our personal friendship. Tomlin is an outstanding individual, and working together on this story every day is a thrilling prospect. We’ve almost completed the script, and both DC and the studio are quite enthused. Our plan is to start production at the beginning of next year, with the possibility of filming around mid-year. Fingers crossed!

It’s worth noting that Mattson Tomlin is also developing a potential series based on the ‘Game of Thrones’ prequel centered around Aegon the Conqueror. However, it remains uncertain whether this project will ultimately be produced. For now, it appears that ‘The Batman Part II’, set to release on October 2, 2026, is his primary focus.
