The Batman 2’s Matt Reeves Clears the Air Around Its DCU Canon Status

I’ve been following the news about James Gunn’s new DC Universe, and like a lot of fans, I’ve been hoping Robert Pattinson’s Batman could somehow be included. Now that *The Batman 2* is really getting going, Matt Reeves, the writer and director, has explained how his Batman films fit into everything. He’s also talked about whether he and James Gunn might work together on a DCU movie at some point.

Matt Reeves confirms The Batman 2 is an Elseworlds movie

During a recent interview on the Happy Sad Confused podcast with Josh Horowitz, Matt Reeves accidentally let slip that both *The Batman* and its sequel exist outside of the main DC Universe, classifying them as separate ‘Elseworlds’ stories.

Reeves said he was flattered by James Gunn’s praise and expressed enthusiasm about a potential collaboration. He confirmed they are currently working together on a DC project, describing it as a separate, alternative take within the DC universe. He added that details about future plans and his involvement will be revealed in time.

Reeves shared that he and Gunn haven’t specifically discussed him leading a DC Universe project, but they have talked generally about how such things might work. He added that it would be enjoyable to collaborate in that way.

He explained that his main goal is to finish the storylines they’ve already started and bring them to a satisfying conclusion, adding that he’s really enthusiastic about how things are progressing.

Following several postponements, The Batman 2 now has a new release date: October 1, 2027. It’s expected to arrive in theaters then.
