The Bachelor lovebirds Laura Byrne and Matty ‘J’ Johnson hit huge roadblock in major renovation of ‘rundown’ $2.2million coastal home
As someone who has followed Matty J and Laura Byrne since their days on The Bachelor, I have to say their journey of renovating their beach house is nothing short of a rollercoaster ride. From termites to snakes, it seems like they’ve faced every challenge known to home renovation! But these resilient reality TV stars are taking it all in stride and transforming the ‘rundown’ coastal property into a luxurious three-bedroom, two-bathroom home.
Matty J and Laura Byrne have encountered a significant setback during the extension renovation of their $2.2 million seaside home.
As a devoted admirer, I must say that the coastal property they acquired from their reality TV days back in August hasn’t exactly been a walk in the park for the renovation process. It’s been quite a challenging voyage thus far.
In my latest social media update, I’ve shared an insightful account of the challenges I’ve encountered while renovating my humble abode. From termite infestations to decaying wood and mold, this transformation has been a rollercoaster ride!
She posted a behind-the-scenes video showing how they had stripped the rundown property to its bare bones and revealed the shocking discoveries they found.
She mentioned that it wasn’t clear what lay ahead with this Reno or how extensive the renovation would need to be until we began removing walls and lifting the carpets.
Along our journey, we encountered various challenges such as termites, white ants, wood rot, mold, and several snakes. However, despite these setbacks, the structure is gradually coming together, and we’re starting to catch a glimpse of the promised outcome, which feels like seeing the light at the end of the tunnel.
Laura shared that she named her house “Chante-Mer,” or “Sing the Sea” in English, and explained that construction had to be halted momentarily for a whole week to allow pest control professionals to eliminate unwanted critters from the property.
‘We had to replace all of the walls and internal structures throughout the kitchen,’ she continued.
Regardless of the obstacles, Laura continued to maintain an optimistic outlook and shared their plans to revamp the rundown beach house into a lavish abode featuring three bedrooms and two bathrooms.
Perched atop a cliff in Ulladulla, which lies on the southernmost coast of New South Wales approximately 226 kilometers from Sydney, this vintage two-story residence boasts breathtaking vistas of the water.
The house was sold in 1984 for just $62,500, but Laura and Matty paid a significantly higher price of approximately $2.19 million when they purchased it in August.
The wedding venue carries a significant sentiment for the joyful duo, as they exchanged vows in 2022 at Cupitts Estate Winery, conveniently situated near their recently acquired vacation residence.
The house, spread across a spacious 746 square meters, offers a breathtaking view of Racecourse Beach. Notably, it was once the residence of Valerie Barnes, a skilled United Nations simultaneous conference translator, who passed away in 2021 at the age of 94.
In the recent past, the couple generated much discussion online when they unveiled an unexpected design decision for their home renovation project.
The pair announced their bold decision to make their coastal retreat a ‘bath-less’ zone, igniting a heated debate among followers.
Matty shared on Instagram a sneak peek at the ongoing bathroom renovation, accompanied by the caption: “Just a heads up, our home won’t have a bathtub for a while.
The brief video displayed a somewhat remodeled bathroom, featuring walls adorned with a distinctive combination of vertical beige and cream striped tiles, giving off a warm, earthy ambiance.
Although everyone was thrilled, some people found the couple’s unusual tile selection and absence of a bathtub hard to accept.
One user commented frankly, “That’s got to be the ugliest tile combo I’ve ever laid eyes on.” However, since it’s not their bathroom, they wished the owner the best, saying, “As long as you enjoy it, good luck to you!
Others voiced concerns over the practicality of going bath-less, especially with young children.
One parent commented, ‘Kids can just sit in the shower. Mine do that most nights.’
On the other hand, someone confessed that they had second thoughts about having a bathtub installed at home because it has primarily become a storage area rather than a place for bathing.
And another approvingly said of their bold tile choice: ‘Arrrr the stripes are looking so good.’
It is known that Laura and Matt are partnering with multiple companies to finance the significant upgrades on their property.
Instead of totally renovating the aged charm back to its original state, they aim to resist the modern trend of painting everything white, as suggested by the house’s Instagram biography.
Laura and Matt have previously posted pictures of their children, Marlie-Mae, aged 5, and Lola, aged 3, exploring their anticipated “ideal residence.
Currently residing in a four-bedroom semi-detached house located in North Bondi, these reality TV personalities bought the property for approximately 5.2 million dollars back in 2023.
They also boast a stunning $1.8million holiday home in Bangalow, near Byron Bay.
Five years after meeting on “The Bachelor,” Laura and Matty officially became husband and wife in November 2022, following their engagement in Fiji back in April 2018.
This couple has been exceptionally successful on the show, and they became parents for the first time with the birth of their daughter Marlie-Mae in 2019. Later, they welcomed another child, Lola, in February 2021.
