The Babadook being re-released theatrically in honor of its 10th anniversary

As a seasoned gamer who’s dabbled a bit in cinema, I can confidently say that The Babadook is not just a movie, but a rollercoaster ride of horror and suspense that has left an indelible mark on my psyche. Having grown up watching slasher flicks and psychological thrillers, this Australian gem stands out as one of the most gripping and thought-provoking experiences I’ve had in recent years.

As a longtime fan of horror films, I was thrilled to learn that “The Babadook” is turning 10 this year! Having grown up watching classics like “The Exorcist” and “Psycho,” I can confidently say that “The Babadook” has earned its place among the greats. The film’s unique blend of psychological horror, suspenseful storytelling, and haunting imagery have left a lasting impression on me.

Following its premiere at Sundance in 2014, the movie titled “The Babadook” had a limited cinema release but still generated more than $10 million worldwide, despite being made on a budget of only $2.1 million. It garnered numerous awards, including several Fangoria Chainsaw prizes and Critics’ Choice nominations.

Widely acclaimed by both critics and audiences, “The Babadook” gained significant attention when its title character was turned into a popular internet meme. Many online users celebrated it as an openly gay icon, and Shout! Factory even released a special LGBTQ Pride Edition of the Blu-ray.

To celebrate the 10-year anniversary, we’re releasing a special edition that features an exclusive Question-and-Answer session with Kent, the director and screenwriter, whose work was inspired by his own short film titled “Monster,” which served as the basis for this movie.

Six years following her husband’s passing, Amelia – a devoted single mother – finds it challenging to nurture and connect with her unruly six-year-old son, Samuel. After accidentally discovering an enigmatic children’s book titled “The Babadook,” Samuel becomes convinced that the monster depicted within is not just a figment of imagination but a genuine threat determined to end their lives.

In response to his hallucinations growing more intense and causing him to act aggressively, Amelia is nearing her limit. However, once she too started having visions of a terrifying creature within their house, she began to wonder if perhaps Samuel was speaking the truth.

The film also stars Hayley McElhinney, Daniel Henshall, Barbara West, and Ben Winspear.
