Amazon is bringing back its twist on the action thriller Taken with a new series called The Assassin. Created by writers Harry and Jack Williams, the show stars a well-known actor from Spooks and Bodyguard as a former hitwoman trying to rebuild a relationship with her son, played by Freddie Highmore of The Good Doctor. She thought she’d left her dangerous life behind, but unsurprisingly, things don’t go as planned.
The hit series The Assassin is coming back for a second season! News from Deadline confirms that production will begin later this year, with Keeley Hawes and Freddie Highmore reprising their roles as Julie and Edward Green. Returning cast members also include Shalom Brune-Franklin and Devon Terrell. The new season will continue the thrilling story, blending elements of spy action, intense drama, and even a touch of unexpected romance – think James Bond meets Taken with a hint of Mamma Mia! – and details about the plot are now available.
The story resumes with Edward and Julie back from a failed trip to Northern Europe, now distant after a secret disagreement. Julie has returned to her life as an assassin and is also trying out dating, while Edward is reeling from a disappointing honeymoon. They’re forced to work together again, this time to take down a corrupt criminal network in Spain, which will test whether they can repair their fractured relationship while completing the dangerous mission.

Keeley Hawes expressed her excitement about returning for season two of The Assassin. She said it will be wonderful to work with Freddie and the rest of the cast again, and she’s particularly looking forward to exploring Julie’s story and her complex connection with Edward further. She feels lucky to have the opportunity to delve deeper into the character and the plot.
I’m really excited to work with the cast and crew again – it’s going to be a lot of fun! Harry and Jack have created another amazing story, and I’m thrilled to be acting alongside the incredibly talented Keeley once more.
Critics were somewhat split on The Assassin, giving it a 74% rating on Rotten Tomatoes, while general audiences scored it lower at 43%. If you’re open to a fresh take on the action genre, though, you might really enjoy it.
