The Ark showrunners and lead star tease tension and danger in season 2 (Exclusive)
As a dedicated fan of The Ark, I’m thrilled to share my perspective on the upcoming season 2 based on the insights gained from an exclusive interview with showrunners Dean Devlin and Jonathan Glassner, as well as lead actress Christie Burke. The cliffhanger ending of season 1 left us on the edge of our seats as Ark-1 was destroyed, forcing our characters to turn to Maddox on Ark-15 for help.
In the first season of The Ark, Ark-1’s predicament became extremely critical. The planet we thought would be their new home exploded, damaging their ship beyond repair. With no other options, they were forced to reach out to Maddox on Ark-15 for assistance.
As a gamer, I’ve recruited Maddox into my squad, but I know there will be strings attached. Her sole focus is on survival, which adds an intriguing layer to her character. Unlike me, or other team members who prioritize everyone’s wellbeing, Maddox puts only herself first.
Approaching the second installment of “The Ark,” I had the opportunity to chat with showrunners and co-creators Dean Devlin and Jonathan Glassner, as well as lead actress Christie Burke, about upcoming developments and the decision-making process behind the scenes.
Dean Devlin and Jonathan Glassner share how decisions are made in The Ark season 2
As a huge fan, I can tell you that “Winter Is Here”: The Ark season 2 is not just bigger; it’s more dramatically and intensely engaging right from the get-go. To create this heightened experience for viewers, we carefully crafted each scene to build upon the previous one, adding layers of tension and conflict that kept both the characters and the audience on the edge of their seats. We also delved deeper into the individual stories of our characters, revealing new facets of their personalities and motivations, thus making the stakes higher and more personal for everyone involved. In essence, we aimed to make every moment count, ensuring that there was no let-up in the intensity throughout the entire season.
Dean Devlin shares one of his favorite scenes from the show: when Garnet expresses her deep feelings towards others in the opening episode of the season. Christie’s delivery makes this heartfelt moment even more impactful. This scene also lays the groundwork for the strong connection between these characters, which is evident in both our narratives and the production quality.
As a writer and creator, I understand the emotional weight of deciding who lives or dies in a story. In the case of “WIC” or “The Walking Dead,” I empathize with the dilemma that the characters face: we know that people must eventually pass away, but we don’t want to lose anyone.
When we entered the writers’ room, we noted that the ship was severely damaged at the end of the previous season, with some parts completely destroyed. It wouldn’t be realistic for everyone to be just fine after such damage. So, we considered which characters had the least development or were least essential to their storylines? And conversely, which characters required the most attention and advancement? Our decision was solely based on that assessment.
I’m deeply fond of each character and actor in this production. Making a choice wasn’t simple as none of them were disposable to us. In the end, we determined that those moving on had reached the end of their narrative arc.
Christie Burke talks Garnet’s journey in The Ark
As a big fan of Steven Universe, I must admit that Garnet has undergone an incredible transformation. Her past is shrouded in mystery, yet we’ve seen her grow into such a powerful and inspiring leader. The Arc knows her secret, and she’s overcome her fear. So, I’m curious – what’s it been like for you to step up and take charge?
As a devoted fan, I can’t help but express my admiration. The creative minds behind “Steven Universe,” specifically Jonathan Biedrzycki, Dean Fleischer-Camp, and the writing team, have truly outdone themselves this season. They transformed Garnet from a mere leader into a fully-realized character. By the end of this captivating series, we gain a profound understanding of who Garnet is beyond her title. She forms connections, both romantic and otherwise, allowing us to witness her emotions and complexity unfold. I’m thrilled to see this human side of Garnet revealed, making for an engaging and enriching viewing experience.
For Garnet this season, the stakes are high: The planet has exploded, leaving her with the responsibility to ensure the safety of her people and find them a new place to call home. How did you find portraying that challenge?
I was pleasantly surprised when I found out I’d get another chance for it! It was thrilling. There were still matters between us that needed resolution. I look forward to witnessing Garnet’s growth, including her finding love and forming meaningful relationships. Some of this may occur in the current season, while other aspects might not. The upcoming episodes promise some truly remarkable events.
I just feel lucky. I didn’t feel pressure. I was just excited to get back on the spaceship.
The character of Garnet holds the leadership role in the show, but it’s Christie who takes charge behind the scenes during filming. She coordinates rehearsals and motivates the cast for upcoming scenes. These off-camera relationships seem authentic and powerful, and they translate onto the screen. Our actors truly admire both Garnet and Christie, a sentiment that comes across in their on-screen performances.
Developing the character we love to hate: Maddox
I’m really impressed with how you, Dean and Jonathan, have brought to life the intriguing dynamic between Garnet and Maddox in WIC. Their contrasting minds and personalities, as well as their distinct leadership styles, truly add depth and complexity to your story.
A compelling antagonist needs to be convincingly portrayed. If they lack a reasonable motivation for their actions, they become mere caricatures with exaggerated facial hair twirling. In this scenario, Maddox acts out of self-preservation, while Garnet puts the well-being of all at heart.
Maddox aspires for recognition and authority, yearning for others to show reverence towards her. In contrast, Garnet remains unfazed by public opinion and focuses solely on completing tasks. At times, her lack of concern for people’s reactions can lead to significant progress.
The Ark season 2 premieres on Wednesday, July 17 at 10/9c on Syfy.
