The Ark season 2, episode 7 review: Is there an Eastern Federation spy on board?

As a survivor of domestic abuse myself, I deeply resonate with Kabir’s storyline in The Ark. It’s heartbreaking yet refreshing to see such a raw portrayal of a character struggling with the aftermath of an abusive relationship, questioning her worth and fearing a potential repeat.

In the seventh episode of Season 2 of “The Ark,” titled “It Can’t Be True,” we delve into some significant character interactions while maintaining the narrative solely within the confines of Ark-1. This installment uncovers hidden truths about its inhabitants.

Caution: This post contains SPOILERS from The Ark season 2, Episode 7, “It Can’t Be True.”

As I began to grow slightly weary of Lati and Kimi’s secretive conversations, it all reaches a climax in the latest episode. I must admit, I underestimated the skillfulness of The Ark‘s writers. It turns out that Kimi and Lati are actually spy hunters. Their mission on Ark-15 was to root out the spies from the Eastern Federation.

In the thrilling premiere of the series, I found myself among those secretly tracking down spies aboard Ark-1. However, our mission was cut short when the ship came under attack. Unfortunately, we didn’t make it out alive, which allowed the cunning EF spies to temporarily evade capture. But rest assured, their hiding places won’t remain hidden for long!

In a different phrasing: Kimi’s pace doesn’t suit Lati, so she takes action herself. The intrigue unfolds as someone attempts to exploit Kelly to assassinate Eva. Initially, Trust is suspected, as he was attempting to guide Kelly in managing her own implants. However, when Eva gets poisoned, the Ark-1 team must identify who could carry out such an act. There’s a single plant capable of producing a poison, but Angus claims he never cultivated it. Who then has been tending to the garden? Lati!

It appears Lati took Dr. Marsh’s wrist console for the purpose of manipulating Kelly’s implants, but when this plan didn’t work, she attempted to harm Eva instead. When that attempt failed too, Lati resumed control over Kelly and abducted Alicia, threatening her life. Her ultimate goal was to board a shuttle carrying enough supplies for six months, giving her ample time to seek assistance from someone else.

Garnet prevented it from happening, and she successfully reached Kelly. In a remarkable show of self-control, Kelly overcame her response even as Lati activated all her embedded devices. What a daring act, and it’s fascinating to witness Kelly’s ability to resist the implant influence! I have a feeling this will prove crucial in the future.

In this scenario, Lati gets taken into custody, whereas Trust emerges from his cell at last. Kelly remains imprisoned, without the Cat 2.0 console that was initially hers. Garnet makes it clear that the console will stay secured within her cabin. Only when Garnet deems it appropriate will Kelly be granted access to it. Now, it’s up to Kelly to demonstrate to all of us that she deserves a place on the team. It’s important to remember that Kelly is merely a youngster and hasn’t had the same opportunities for growth as others. As such, she has much to learn. Yet, she appears eager, and I can’t help but hope for her rehabilitation.

Eva’s secrets come out

Absolutely, since Lati acted independently, her and Kimi’s hidden intentions regarding Ark-1 were revealed. Consequently, Kimi had no choice but to disclose this to Garnet and Strickland. It wasn’t about personal matters; it was a mission-related issue. This situation then led Garnet to seek answers from Eva.

It appears that Eva, who was once suspected of being an EF spy, has confessed to this. However, Garnet and the others find it hard to believe. But given the events on Ark-1 following their early awakening from cryostasis, it’s possible that her status may have changed.

Regardless, this situation won’t affect Garnet differently. She’s compelled to escort Eva to her room and station a guard there, essentially confining her to the premises, much like a home detention.

Poor Brice indeed! He’s reluctant to accept that Eva might be an undercover agent from EF. His response clearly indicates that Lati and Kimi were mistaken about him, as we had all assumed. Will Brice and Eva manage to move past this misunderstanding? That seems to hinge on what transpires with Eva now that the truth has been revealed.

Kabir opens up to Strickland about her past

In this episode, it wasn’t just Eva’s secret that surfaced; it also emerged that Kabir and Marsh have been growing closer. At first, Kabir kept his distance due to Jelena seeming attracted, but Jelena confided in Kabir about her true reasons for being in the Med Bay. This revelation could lead to something developing between the two doctors, yet Kabir remains uncertain.

As she vents her anger on a punching bag, Strickland enters and engages her in conversation. Strickland is known for keeping confidences, which explains why Kabir feels comfortable opening up to him about her past. Desperate to escape the clutches of her selfish, violent ex-husband, she opted for the Ark-1 mission to put as much distance between them as possible.

Just as many who have fled abusive relationships often carry self-blame, she shares some of the burden herself. Moreover, she hasn’t fully broken free from him. The lingering trauma still haunts her, and she fears being drawn back into the same predicament. I admire The Ark for portraying this narrative. There have consistently been suggestions of past abuse in Kabir’s background, and to depict her hesitant about a fresh relationship due to her past is both relatable and authentic.

It’s tough to come by someone trustworthy, but just as mentioned earlier, Strickland is the kind of person who can be relied upon with secrets. Witnessing their friendship blossom on screen is a moving experience, and I appreciate that Strickland offers to impart some self-defense techniques to Kabir. It’s essential for everyone to learn these skills, even if they never have a need to use them.

Garnet and Spencer get closer

From the very beginning of “The Ark“, we’ve been cheering on Alicia and Angus. They’re just too endearing, and their dialogue where they both thought the other had experience was so sweet. I’m happy that happened. This relationship is another one that I’m really invested in at the moment. It’s all about Spencer and Garnet.

This episode begins immediately after the explosion at the end of the last one, and Garnet deduces that one of the Generation 2 clones must possess a device to trigger the bomb. Spencer strongly suspects it’s Ian, who is currently imprisoned. However, there’s some doubt in my mind about his guilt. In a touching scene, they share personal feelings as Spencer discovers what became of the other two Generation 2 clone brothers/siblings. These clones were engineered to serve as replacement parts for the wealthy.

Instead of focusing on his purpose, Spencer finds solace in the tablet for the Juno Project as presented by Garnet. Before he could even glance at who his partner is, Garnet breaks down, lamenting not being paired with anyone. It’s disheartening to learn that others were matched while she wasn’t, a rule enforced by Trust due to their clone nature and reproduction concerns.

Garnet reminds Spencer that since no one was aware he was a clone, it’s possible he might not have been paired up with anyone either. She adds that the Ensign he was partnered with, who was lost during the ship’s initial attack, was unaware of his true identity as well.

In this part of the episode, we find the sweetest scene. Spencer notes that since his cloning secret is out, Trust wouldn’t pair him with anyone else either. Consequently, Garnet and Spencer are without partners. It might be intriguing if they teamed up themselves. The expression on Garnet’s face hints at mutual interest between them. I’m eager to see the writers delve deeper into this potential relationship.

As a gamer, I can’t help but wonder about the unresolved mystery surrounding those clones. In this latest episode, Milos paid a visit to Kabir, but things took an unexpected turn in the Med Bay when a brawl erupted. With Kabir rushing off with Strickland and others to quell the chaos, Milos seized some mysterious red pills. The question now is, will these actions lead to more people being locked up or, even worse, expelled from the station? With only five episodes left, it’s hard to predict where this storyline might go.

The Ark airs Wednesdays at 10/9 on Syfy.
