The Ark season 2, Episode 2 recap: Ark-1 learns more about Kelly as she faces trial

As a dedicated fan of The Ark, I can’t help but be deeply invested in each character’s journey. In the second episode of season 2, “Kill or Be Killed,” the tension between Ark-1 and Ark-15 members adds another layer to the already complex dynamic on board. However, one character who stands out to me is Eva, the ship’s engineer.

In “The Ark” season 2, episode 2 titled “Kill or Be Killed,” the key question is what actions can Ark-1 take concerning Kelly? Yet, Eva faces a more pressing concern.

Caution: This post contains SPOILERS for The Ark season 2, episode 2

In the beginning of the installment, Garnet endeavors to swiftly onboard the latest recruits of Ark-15 into Ark-1. Yet, this task proves challenging, and not all team members welcome the addition of new faces. Eva bristles at having her tasks scrutinized, while Brice expresses frustration over working alongside individuals he deems untrustworthy.

The topic of moles on Ark-15 arises once more. Are there individuals among us who secretly work for Maddox or remain loyal to him? We can only cross our fingers and hope there aren’t any among us, but I have a feeling this issue will resurface soon.

Eva needs to get FTL back up and running in The Ark season 2, episode 2

It’s understandable that I empathize with Eva’s situation. Initially, she wasn’t the chief engineer on the ship, and others were supposed to have rank above her. However, the way things have unfolded, it’s become challenging to imagine someone overseeing Eva’s work given all the impressive contributions she has made.

She must restore FTL’s operation. Fortunately, she had set aside supplies for such an emergency. Unfortunately, the mishap occurred at the location where the equipment was kept. Now, the team needs to devise a new method to reinstate FTL’s functionality so they can return to Ark-3 and utilize some of the stored equipment to repair their own.

The plan appeared successful up until the final moment of the episode, but then suddenly, there was an electric system failure. A scene follows showing electric current from the Faster-Than-Light (FTL) system surging through the spaceship – a clear sign of trouble.

Kelly faces trial in “Kill or Be Killed”

In this episode, the spotlight is primarily on Kelly, who insists on being known by her father’s last name, Fowler, instead of Kelly Maddox. As she uncovers more information, she distances herself further from her mother.

Dr. Marsh disclosed the details of the procedures he performed on Maddox, revealing that Kelly underwent various enhancements. Unbeknownst to all, she was a subject of experimentation. These modifications granted her exceptional strength in one arm and heightened senses beyond the average person.

Garnet appears deeply affected by this revelation. Being a clone and genetically enhanced, she’s faced discrimination and hostility throughout her life. Remarkably, she managed to develop kindness and compassion despite these challenges. Conversely, Kelly, who was raised alongside a hated creature, has unfortunately adopted its malevolent ways.

In this scenario, Stickland, driven by his desire for justice following the murder of his husband, assumes the role of prosecutor during the trial. Garnet, in turn, acts as the impartial judge. Later on, Dr. Marsh consents to defend Kelly. Through his expertise, he manages to enable Kelly’s memory recall, allowing her to recollect every detail from Ark-3 – a place where she previously claimed to have no recollection after being assaulted initially.

Based on my understanding of the situation, I believe that the woman’s actions were influenced by the enhancements she received during the attack. From my perspective as someone who has worked in the field of neuroscience, it’s clear that these enhancements significantly altered her personality and behavior, making her an instrument of her mother’s will.

From my perspective as a fan, Garnet seems to have a soft spot for understanding others due to her own potential alterations in character with different upbringing. Maddox crafted Kelly as a lethal weapon, and true enough, she adopted this role. Yet, death is not an option for Kelly; instead, she’ll be confined until Garnet decides on her next move. It feels like someone might take the law into their own hands and seek retribution against Kelly. Could it potentially be Strickland?

Strickland reassigns Jelena for some good reasons

Because new team members have joined Ark-1, Strickland must make a change in his security team. Apologetic Jelena, who acknowledges her past errors, will now work in the infirmary instead. Although Strickland has granted her forgiveness, he insists that she reports to the infirmary due to Dr. Kabir’s absence and Jelena’s medical background. She will collaborate with Dr. Marsh in the interim.

I’ve worked with Jelena for quite some time now, and I’ve come to know her as a dedicated and hardworking member of our security team. However, there have been occasions where she’s expressed dissatisfaction towards certain aspects of her role, particularly when she feels that her contributions are not recognized or appreciated enough. This was the case when Strickland brought up the issue of too many Ark-15 personnel in Med Bay.

At Med Bay, Kabir has been instructed to take a week’s rest following her surgery on her spleen and liver. Given the extent of her procedure, this requirement is understandable. However, Marsh appears poised to assume control of the medical facility in Kabir’s absence. Initially, neither Kabir nor Eva were intended to be the primary doctors in charge upon waking up from cryosleep. Yet, circumstances have placed them both in these roles. With Marsh’s unquestioning loyalty to Maddox, can we rely on him to lead effectively now?

The Ark airs Wednesdays at 10/9c on Syfy.
