The AEW women’s division needs a Continental Classic

As a long-time wrestling enthusiast with decades of fandom under my belt, I can’t help but feel a tad disheartened by the latest news from All Elite Wrestling (AEW). The 2024 Continental Classic is shaping up to be quite the spectacle, yet it seems to have forgotten a crucial piece of the puzzle: a women’s tournament.

In a significant turn of events at All Elite Wrestling, the lineup for the 2024 Continental Classic was unveiled. The Blue and Gold Leagues boast some of the most prominent male wrestlers. These groups consist of past champions, rising stars, and long-standing veterans. However, there seems to be a conspicuous absence. Can you guess what it is? It’s a women’s tournament! By introducing a women’s tournament, Tony Khan could have garnered much favor with fans, but it appears that this won’t happen in 2024, which would be a considerable oversight.

Consider the potential candidates for a women’s C2 match. These include Athena, Deonna Purrazzo, Emi Sakura, Hikaru Shida, Jamie Hayter, Kris Statlander, Thunder Rosa, Kamille, Marina Shafir, Nyla Rose, Riho, and Queen Aminata. This list only scratches the surface of talented wrestlers that could be involved. If the company were to leverage its partnership with Stardom, even more notable names might join the fray.

As an ardent fan, I’ve always admired AEW’s self-proclamation as “the stage for the best wrestlers.” However, it’s disheartening to see that the women’s division, arguably the most talented in North American wrestling, is not fully represented in their premier tournament. For a long time, we fans have been advocating for a more balanced approach in the booking of the women’s division. There were moments when it seemed like progress was being made towards this goal. Yet, as we stand here in 2024, it appears that the narrative around the division has taken a step backwards.

There’s no valid excuse for not scheduling a Continental Classic in the women’s division. They have a skilled team capable of pulling it off. There’s enough space between Dynamite, Collision, and Rampage to arrange all the matches required for the tournament. The fans are eager for it, and so are the women on the roster. Therefore, the only one left to question is the creative director as to why this tournament hasn’t been organized yet.

2024’s AEW Continental Classic promises an incredible spectacle, as boldly stated by another esteemed wrestler, “it’s going to be one banger after another, after another.” Regrettably, it appears the women’s division isn’t getting their turn this year. Here’s hoping fans everywhere rally and urge Tony Khan to bring about a change in the schedule.
