The AEW Continental Classic continues to give the best wrestling around

As a die-hard wrestling fan with over three decades of ringside experience under my belt, let me tell you that AEW Dynamite’s December 25 edition was nothing short of a masterpiece. The Continental Classic has swiftly become the heart and soul of what makes AEW unique, setting new standards for in-ring action that other companies can only dream of emulating.

On December 25th, the AEW Dynamite broadcast offered wrestling enthusiasts a delightful feast, wrapped up as top-notch professional wrestling performances. The Continental Classic, a key aspect that sets AEE apart, served as the main attraction, swiftly establishing itself as one of the defining features that make AEW stand out. This particular episode, along with both editions of the tournament, continue to showcase AEW raising the bar for what fans anticipate in terms of exceptional ring action.

The event on 34th Street, titled “Dynamite,” showcased some thrilling matches during the Continental Classic. In one of them, Will Ospreay outclassed Brody King. Darby Allin and Ricochet ended in a draw due to time limits. Kyle Fletcher triumphed over Daniel Garcia, while Komander defeated Claudio Castagnoli. The final bout saw Kazuchika Okada besting Shelton Benjamin. Each of these matches had unique implications for the tournament and the personal storylines of the wrestlers. Similar to 2023, this year’s Continental Classic is demonstrating compelling narrative through its tournament structure.

In this arena of professional wrestling, AEW truly shines. If someone wants to demonstrate that this is the company with the top talent, they need only look at the past two years’ performances. The excitement continues at World’s End on December 28, as Ospreay and Fletcher prepare for their eagerly awaited rematch, while Okada and Ricochet face off on the opposite side of the bracket. The victors from these three matches will square off later in the evening. These three battles alone could fuel a PPV event for any wrestling company, but here, fans get to witness them all on the same night.

Is everything flawless with the C2? By no means. For instance, this competition seems unnecessary for a championship. The initial event appeared to be primarily a means to grant a singles title to Eddie Kingston, and now that Okada holds the title, it doesn’t elevate him any further in feeling “distinguished” than he already does as one of the best worldwide talents.

After considering the matter, there’s been an ongoing debate about why the women’s division hasn’t yet had its own tournament. With AEW boasting a talented group of female wrestlers who could effortlessly fill a bracket and deliver matches of equal quality to their male counterparts, one can’t help but wonder if that chance will materialize someday. It’s difficult to predict the future given the current booking style, but such a change would undoubtedly enhance the prestige of the tournament.

The “Match of the Year” race can never be decided before December comes and goes. The reason is because the Continental Classic is going to bring out the best wrestlers in AEW. Every night they put on a show and this year’s tournament is more of the same. This is why fans continue to watch All Elite Wrestling.
