The Acolyte star Amandla Stenberg not surprised the Star Wars show was canceled
As a long-time gamer and avid Star Wars fan, I can’t help but feel a mix of emotions over Disney’s decision to cancel The Acolyte. On one hand, it’s disappointing that we won’t get to see how the story unfolds and resolve those dangling plot threads. On the other hand, I can’t help but empathize with Amandla Stenberg‘s experiences of bigotry and hateful rhetoric in the Star Wars fandom.
Recently, it came to light that Disney has scrapped their upcoming “Star Wars” series titled “The Acolyte,” a move made mere months following the completion of its first season, leaving numerous storylines incomplete. Star Lee Jung-jae (portraying Jedi Master Sol) expressed surprise at this decision, while Amandla Stenberg, who played dual roles as Osha and her twin sister Mae, seemed less taken aback by it.
As a gamer, let me lay it all out there – it’s not entirely unexpected that the show got canceled. From the moment it was announced as just an idea, we faced a relentless wave of backlash. I’m talking about a storm of hyper-conservative bigotry and hateful rhetoric that was tough to swallow. It hit me hard when I first started working on it because, even though I knew it might happen, you never really understand the impact until it happens to you.
It has been an incredible honor and dream for me to be in this universe…Of course I’m very sad about the show being canceled, and I’m sad about us not being able to give people who are invested into it more…I just want to let those people know out there who supported us in that way, and supported us vocally despite and in the face of all of the vitriol that we received, and the kind of the targeted attack I would say we received by the alt-right, just that you were deeply loved and appreciated, and it made this job all worthwhile for me.
In addition, Headland expresses gratitude towards Lucasfilm and series creator Lesley Headland, whom she refers to as “one of the finest individuals in the world.” She mentions that she will cherish this experience for eternity, acknowledging that she may take some time to fully comprehend the events.
It’s not hard to believe that Headland and her team experienced a bitgoted backlash; to use Headland’s words from a while back, her feeds were flooded with “intolerable racism.” There have been a lot of similar flare-ups in the Star Wars fandom in the past, with actors like John Boyega and Kelly Marie Tran both talking about it. By the time the Obi-Wan Kenobi show came out, Disney was warning actors like Moses Ingram about the kind of backlash she would likely receive. It sounds like Stenberg was ready as well, but being ready and actually experiencing that sort of wave of hate are two different things.
To clarify, I don’t believe the backlash against “The Acolyte” was primarily responsible for its cancellation; there might be other significant factors at play. Bob Iger, CEO of Disney, has expressed concerns about oversaturating popular franchises such as Marvel and Star Wars, and he has pledged to reduce their exposure. Given the high production cost and moderate viewership of “The Acolyte,” it may have appeared an ideal candidate for cancellation due to these economic reasons.
It’s a fine line to walk, because while the racist backlash to a show like The Acolyte is unacceptable, there were plenty of fans who who didn’t enjoy the series on its own terms. I personally found The Acolyte pretty underwhelming as a drama, but I wish Disney had given it another season to wrap up the story and to reward the show’s many passionate fans who are even now trying to save it. And as a flashpoint in a wider culture war, the cancelation is regrettable.
Following Disney’s lineup of Star Wars content, we have an upcoming series titled Skeleton Crew. This show revolves around a band of youngsters who unexpectedly end up on a spaceship, away from their home. It’s set to premiere on December 3 on Disney+. Will it encounter the same destiny as The Acolyte? Time will tell. Keep an eye out and find out.
