The Acolyte: Mae, the girl no one wanted

As a devoted fan of “The Acolyte,” I can’t help but be drawn to the complex and heart-wrenching story of Mae Aniseya. While she has certainly made her fair share of mistakes, I find myself reflecting on her tragic past more than most other characters in the series.

In the aftermath of “The Acolyte” series ending, I find myself repeatedly reflecting on Mae Aniseya’s character, portrayed by Emily Berrington. Although she has committed numerous wrongs, I’m not attempting to halo her or label her as a saint. The intricate narrative of the show left quite an impression on me, and while audiences were enthralled by Osha and Qimir’s romance, Mae’s story resonated deeply with me. Despite her flaws, she has become a complex and compelling character in my mind.

Because Mae is the girl no one wanted.

Mae was cherished by only her mothers, Aniseya and Koril, who doted on their daughters. Desiring the best for both, they supported Mae wholeheartedly as she grew fond of her coven’s customs and beliefs. However, Osha, Mae’s twin sister, longed to leave and explore new horizons since childhood. This desire distressed Mae, leading her to lash out in anger one fateful day. In a fit of rage, she destroyed Osha’s journal. Unfortunately, the situation soon spiraled out of control: as the fire grew unmanageable, Mae raced outside for help, only to witness one mother being killed and the other fleeing in terror. Overwhelmed by the loss of her two devoted caretakers in a heartbeat, Mae was left alone.

I’ve had my fair share of making tough choices in my life, but none quite like Sol’s. His story is one that resonates with me, as it highlights the depth of human connection and loyalty.

Mae believed she had discovered a sense of acceptance among Qimir and her supposed master, who later turned out to be Qimir himself. However, the dark side proved merciless, feeding off Mae’s anguish as she mourned the presumed death of Osha. Yet, when presented with an opportunity to reconnect with her sister, Mae chose to leave Qimir behind. In that instant, she became an obstacle in his path, and he preferred the company of Osha instead. Ultimately, Osha’s presence consumed Qimir’s attention, leaving no room for Mae.

Starting from the point of their reunion, Osha harbored distrust towards Mae. She pursued her own twin with the intention of avenging the events at Brendok. Despite Mae’s attempts to reconcile, Osha either rejected her or tried to harm her instead. It wasn’t until Osha received the truth from Sol that she finally believed her sister.

The sisters’ heartfelt reunion didn’t last long. With a heavy heart, I, Mae, gave up my own life so that Osha could follow her desired path, even if it meant being with Qimir. I decided to wipe out all memories of my sister, Qimir, and the past sixteen years from my mind. It was a selfless decision for my unchosen sister, who had never truly chosen me. Despite this, I, Mae, had always thought deeply about Osha.

It’s deeply sad to read about Mae’s situation. Although the Jedi Order may have questionable motives, I’m relieved that Mae is with Vernestra Rwoh. I’m not optimistic about the Jedi’s intentions towards Mae, but rather, Vernestra seems to be searching for her old student, Qimir, and sees Mae as a means to an end. Mae deserves better than being used; unfortunately, that’s not what everyone on this list seems to care about. I hope that being with Vernestra presents an opportunity for Mae to begin anew. While Vernestra shared some information about Osha with Mae, there is still a chance for her to start fresh.

Since no one else has wanted Mae, I hope she chooses herself.
