As a long-time Star Wars fan and avid gamer, I have witnessed the complex and flawed characters that this iconic franchise has brought to life, offering them a chance for redemption despite their mistakes. However, in the case of Master Sol from The Acolyte, this opportunity seems sorely missed. Sol was a complicated character, and while his actions were undeniably selfish and detrimental, there was more to his story that deserved exploration.
In the Star Wars franchise, no other series has introduced as many imperfect characters and provided them with a chance for atonement. However, this element of guilt and redemption is absent from Master Sol’s backstory in “The Acolyte,” making it hard to reconcile with his complex personality. Master Sol is acknowledged as a challenging character by all, and he is known for being obstinate and self-centered, putting his emotional ties above the potential repercussions.
Although Sol’s mistakes led to his downfall, the aftermath of his death adds depth and sadness to his story. Following his passing, Vernestra accuses him of all wrongdoings, preventing him from explaining or defending himself. Despite his reprehensible actions towards Brendok, Sol paid the price with his life and reputation. As we approach Season 2, I hope showrunner Leslye Headland will provide a means to clear Master Sol’s name and acknowledge the complexity of his character, as Lee Jung-jae brilliantly portrayed it.

In the Star Wars universe, there’s often a chance to discover a positive outcome even from Master Sol’s sad demise. Although hope and redemption were absent in The Acolyte’s ending, if Leslye chooses to explore Sol’s mistakes in Season 2, she could allow him to share his side of the story through a written message or hologram meant for Osha. This would introduce a valuable element of optimism into the narrative.
An effective way to help Osha find resolution and provide an explanation from Sol would be if someone at the Jedi Temple, such as Vernestra Rwoh or one of the younglings Sol once mentored, discovers a recording left by Sol many years later. In this message, Sol could express remorse for his actions and ask for forgiveness in killing Mother Aniseya. He would acknowledge that what he did was unforgivable and that Osha has every right to hate him. Sol would confess that his decision to take Osha from her family and end her mother’s life were driven by his emotions. However, he hopes that Osha can find a way to move past the events and not let them define her future negatively. Additionally, Sol owes Mae a significant apology for being held accountable for the Khofar massacre, meaning Sol has faced the consequences of his actions.
After Sol’s departure and atonement for his wrongdoings, it is crucial we shift our attention towards Osha’s upcoming journey. I firmly believe that Osha’s descent into darkness won’t yield any positive outcomes. However, the person who unwittingly guided her on this path can also be the one to lead her back. Sol holds the power to prevent Mae and himself from following a similar destructive path.
In the end, Leslye Headland holds the reins. There must be a positive outcome from the deceit and devastation. As a devoted fan of Star Wars, I yearn for optimism and atonement to prevail.
