The Acolyte: Are hopes for a Season 2 in jeopardy?

As a dedicated fan of Star Wars, I have eagerly anticipated each new addition to the expansive galaxy far, far away. The release of “The Acolyte” was no exception. Before its premiere, Leslye Headland’s interviews fueled our hopes for multiple seasons, and her vision for the show resonated with me. However, the initial viewership numbers have left many fans, including myself, feeling disheartened.

Although some responses to “The Acolyte” have been split, there’s still optimism among fans that a second installment is on the horizon.

Prior to the show’s premiere, Leslye Headland suggested in numerous interviews that she had received guarantees from Lucasfilm for multiple seasons. She expressed her desire to create at least five seasons. However, with each passing week and the release of viewership numbers, the possibility of a second season appears to be fading.

Based on Nielsen’s data reported by Forbes, The Acolyte’s premiere viewership was roughly half that of Ahsoka and three-quarters less than The Mandalorian. Currently, The Acolyte ranks among the least-watched Star Wars shows, below even Obi-Wan Kenobi, The Book of Boba Fett, and Andor. Andor held the title for least-watched, but it received widespread critical acclaim. Unfortunately, The Acolyte falls short in this regard as well, with many neutral viewers expressing disappointment over the writing and other elements of the series.

Another noteworthy aspect is that we only have data from one metric system. Previous reports mentioned that The Acolyte surpasses various Star Wars series in terms of views and audience engagement according to another metrics provider, suggesting its massive popularity.

The Acolyte: Are hopes for a Season 2 in jeopardy?

Similar to “Andor,” “The Acolyte” could potentially receive a second opportunity to win over audiences. Nevertheless, the major concern lies in the significant difference between its performance and the substantial production cost of $180 million. “The Acolyte” carries a higher price tag than shows like “Ahsoka,” “The Mandalorian,” and is only slightly less expensive than “Rogue One: A Star Wars Story.” Despite having a large budget, similar to “Andor,” the critical acclaim and enthusiastic fan response for “Andor” have compensated for its lower viewership, leading Disney to allocate an even greater budget for “Andor’s” second season. In contrast, “The Acolyte” has failed to impress visually, aside from its spectacular lightsaber fights that have earned universal praise. The overall visual quality of the show does not meet expectations and does not seem to warrant the $180 million budget.

Disney and Lucasfilm may reconsider continuing with “The Acolyte” despite its lukewarm debut and hefty budget. While it’s possible that recent episodes have shown improvement, the prospects for further success are limited. Ultimately, the decision to produce another season or end the series at this point rests with Disney and Lucasfilm.

The Acolyte is streaming on Disney+.
