The Accountant 2: Streaming Premiere After Box Office Flop—Is It Worth the Wait?
To regain traction after becoming less profitable than beneficial at the box office, the action-thriller film will soon be released online to attract a fresh audience on Netflix.
Through Prime Video, the highly anticipated film “The Accountant 2” will debut on June 5, approximately six weeks following its theater release. Directed by Gavin O’Connor, this sequel now joins the 2016 original on the streaming service, making it convenient for fans to follow the duology on a single platform.
In the midst of tough rivalry at the box office from films like “Sinners”, “Thunderbolts”, “Mission: Impossible – The Final Reckoning” and an anticipated sequel to “The Accountant”, this movie had a hard time yielding substantial profits from its $80 million production cost, amassing only $101.6 million globally so far. Yet, it’s been praised by critics, garnering a 76% rating (significantly higher than the initial film with 53%) on a review aggregator platform, demonstrating its appeal to movie enthusiasts.
What Is The Accountant 2 About?
In essence, similar to the original, the narrative revolves around Christian Wolff, an autistic accountant who cleans money for criminal masterminds globally. He alters illicit financial records to make them appear legitimate. After the enigmatic killing of Treasury Department director Raymond King (J.K. Simmons), Wolff is asked by deputy director Marybeth Medina (Cynthia Addai-Robinson) to unravel this crime. In addition, he summons his alienated brother and firearms expert Braxton (Bernthal) for assistance in the investigation. Yet, with each piece of evidence they uncover, they become more vulnerable to ruthless assassins. They also encounter a formidable adversary in Anaïs, portrayed by the actress from The Originals.
The sequel to “The Accountant” was first announced back in 2017, following the original movie’s success which grossed over $155 million on a budget of just $40 million. However, complications with rights and development pushed back the sequel until early 2024. Although no official announcement has been made yet, Ben Affleck, Anna Kendrick, and John Bernthal (who played key roles in the first film) have reportedly shown interest in making a third movie. It’s also hoped that Addai-Robinson will reprise his role if the threequel goes ahead. Furthermore, actress Alana Tunkey, who portrayed Affleck’s love interest in the original film, has expressed her desire to be part of another installment.
The Accountant 2 is now showing in theaters across North America.
