The Accountant 2 Is Way Funnier Than Expected—These 5 Scenes Had Me in Stitches
Warning: SPOILERS for The Accountant 2.
In the thrilling and suspenseful style reminiscent of a film like “The Accountant 2“, it’s quite astonishing how much more humor it packs compared to its predecessor. Many characters in “The Accountant 2” get their chance to elicit laughs, but the majority of these comedic moments are reserved for Ben Affleck and Jon Bernthal. If the progression of this sequel is any indication, then “The Accountant 3” promises to be even funnier.
As a cinema enthusiast, I must say that the overwhelmingly positive reception towards “The Accountant 2” can be attributed to several factors, one of which is the enhanced emphasis on Chris and Braxton’s relationship in this sequel. While the first film had its share of memorable moments, the sequel’s focus on their bond allows for a plethora of engaging, humorous exchanges.
Braxton, with his charismatic charm, was already a standout character in the original, and in this installment, he truly shines brighter. However, it’s important to note that he doesn’t shoulder all the film’s funniest scenes alone.
5. The Entire Country Bar Sequence, Including Ben Affleck’s Dance
His Analytical Mind Makes Him One Heck Of A Line Dancer
In a different wording: When Braxton proposes a night out drinking in L.A., he’s thinking they’ll visit a trendy club. However, things take an unexpected turn as they end up in a rustic cowboy bar, where Chris is requesting the house band to play “Enter Sandman” by Metallica. This conversation is quite amusing, but the situation becomes particularly entertaining when Chris feels envious that his crush is dancing with another man. It takes him a moment, but eventually Christian begins to grasp the idea that dancing is essentially math simplified into rhythm and recall.
In the absence of Anna Kendrick in “The Accountant 2”, it’s enjoyable to witness Chris bravely seeking a woman’s contact information. While Ben Affleck’s dance is charming, Braxton’s presence in the scene comes close to upstaging it. Watching Braxton watch Chris dance is nearly as captivating as the dance itself, and it certainly adds a thrilling element to the fight scene that follows. The trailers deftly concealed the intriguing detail that Chris deliberately asks another man to attack him, giving Braxton a valid reason for engaging in a brawl. This unexpected twist makes an already exciting sequence even more delightful.
4. Chris Getting Impatient With Medina
He Basically Implies That She’s Slow
Cynthia Addai-Robinson’s character Marybeth Medina had previously shown reluctance towards accepting advice from criminals, so her reunion with Chris in the sequel required substantial incentive. The demise of J.K. Simmons’ character Raymond King in “The Accountant 2” provides that motivation. Once Medina locates him, Chris ends up spending a night at Ray’s former residence as they both examine a wall filled with evidence related to the case that Ray was investigating when he met his end.
If you didn’t gather from his extensive mathematical equations in the initial film, Chris tends to work in a distinctive manner. He doesn’t openly criticize Medina’s way of organizing evidence, but instead he fidgets nervously while she’s arranging things. When queried about his actions, he casually states that he’s just waiting for her to complete whatever she believes she’s doing so that he can proceed with what he deems necessary. His straightforward response surprisingly brings a chuckle. Upon waking up the following day, Chris has rearranged everything Medina had done to align with a pattern he finds more practical.
3. Braxton Practicing For His Phone Call With Margaret
It Sets Up One Of The Movie’s Best Subplots
One of the early tense moments in the film unfolds when Braxton repeatedly says “Hi, Margaret” to a mirror, changing his tone as he grows more and more anxious. Initially, it appears he might be getting ready for a date or reunion with an old acquaintance. However, the climax of the scene unveils that Braxton is actually on edge about purchasing Margaret’s Corgi puppy.
Due to the considerable time span between The Accountant and The Accountant 2, it appears that Braxton has come to feel solitary. This theme pervades the entire film, as Braxton discusses his intention to get a puppy with his brother, but Chris reveals that he is actually a cat lover because he lacks friends and doesn’t maintain a consistent schedule. Interestingly, this detail plays a significant role in the movie’s resolution, making the “Hi, Margaret” scene serve as the film’s ongoing comedic motif throughout its duration.
2. Chris & Braxton’s Phone Call
The Lightsaber Is A Cute Touch
In the closing scene of the initial film, I told Braxton I’d reach out to him in a week for a get-together. However, it’s worth noting that, surprisingly, none of the cast members seem to have aged a day. Yet, the sequel cleverly hints at the eight years that have elapsed since the first movie premiered. So, when Chris finally called, I found him in less than stellar spirits, not because we were catching up but rather because he and Medina needed some additional firepower, as he was fiddling with a lightsaber nonchalantly at the time.
In the scene, Christian’s puzzlement over Braxton’s anger is amusing, but there’s another layer of humor as well. Initially, it seems like Braxton is on a date when Chris calls, but it turns out that the woman with him is the only survivor after Braxton had killed everyone else in her house. It’s an unusual source of laughter in a movie to find amusement from the revelation of multiple dead bodies, but The Accountant 2 manages to achieve this.
1. Medina Realizing A Criminal Is Still In The Car Trunk
Not The Kind Of Thing You Typically Forget About
Prior to uncovering the truth about The Accountant 2’s unique savant syndrome and its relevance to their investigation, Medina firmly establishes legal boundaries for how she wants to conduct their inquiry. Therefore, she feels somewhat aggravated when Braxton resorts to extreme measures such as throwing a criminal enforcer off a balcony and imprisoning him in her trunk. When she subsequently discovers that Braxton was responsible for several of the murders Ray had previously pinned on Anais, she decides to sever all ties with the brothers entirely.
In all the rush to leave, Medina inadvertently overlooked the fact that the officer was still hidden in her vehicle’s trunk. She didn’t realize this until several yards down the road when he began pounding on the car and calling out for aid, startling her. Despite being a key character in The Accountant 2, it appears she hadn’t considered letting him free for fresh air for what seems like over twelve hours.
