The Accountant 2 Hits Box Office but Faces Unexpected Challenge

It seems like everything is falling into place for the sequel, as “The Accountant 2” starring Ben Affleck and Jon Bernthal is expected to perform well at the box office upon its release, according to a recent report on its opening weekend earnings.

Based on predictions, the film titled “The Accountant 2” is anticipated to generate approximately $20 million to $25 million in domestic box office revenue during its first three days, playing across more than 3,600 theaters. However, despite boasting a well-known star, “The Accountant 2” may not claim the number one spot on the charts due to the release of Ryan Coogler’s supernatural thriller, titled “Sinners”. In its second weekend, “Sinners” is projected to earn up to $30 million.

In essence, the anticipated debut of “The Accountant 2” mirrors the earnings of the initial movie from 2016, earning around $24.7 million during its opening weekend and eventually grossing $155 million worldwide on a budget of $44 million, despite receiving mixed critiques. However, even with a successful start, there’s still an obstacle to overcome, as “The Accountant 2” needs to generate more revenue to ensure profitability given its reported production budget of approximately $80 million (excluding international marketing costs).

In “The Accountant 2,” Ben Affleck reprises his role as Christian Wolff, a high-functioning autistic individual who secretly launders money for global criminals. This time around, Wolff is asked by U.S. Treasury Agent Marybeth Medina to aid in the investigation of the murder of Raymond King, the head of the Treasury Department (played by J.K. Simmons). As Wolff delves into the case and enlists the help of his estranged brother Braxton (Bernthal), a skilled weapons expert, they find themselves pursued by ruthless assassins as they inch closer to the truth. The movie also features “Jurassic World” star Anaïs as its primary antagonist.

The sequel to “The Accountant” was first announced in 2017, but due to development and rights issues, Amazon MGM Studios acquired its international distribution rights last year. Ben Affleck, who is also a producer on the film through his Artist Equity production company, teams up once again with director Gavin O’Connor, having worked together on the original movie and Affleck’s 2020 sports drama, which he recently described as giving his best performance.

The Accountant 2 Reviews Are Positive

Initial responses to “The Accountant 2” have been overwhelmingly favorable following its debut at the Texas film festival in March. The action follow-up currently boasts an impressive 80% critical rating on popular review aggregator sites, significantly surpassing the original’s score. A select number of cinemas across the U.S. have already screened advanced showings of “The Accountant 2“. The movie runs for approximately 2 hours and 12 minutes.

The Accountant 2 opens in theaters on Apr. 25.
