Some shows fail to treat serious topics with the weight they deserve. The heartbreaking story of children lost in a terrible accident should be deeply affecting, not a source of laughter. Yet, that’s what happened with a certain show in 2024, when it unexpectedly became a worldwide hit. Now, its second season is also proving popular, but is receiving the same surprisingly lighthearted reaction.
The series focuses on the events following a devastating accident at a birthday party where three children died when a bouncy castle was blown away by strong winds. Unfortunately, the show’s overly dramatic presentation was widely criticized by both reviewers and viewers. It currently holds a low 29% rating on Rotten Tomatoes, and hasn’t received enough audience feedback to generate an audience score.
Season 2 is receiving poor reviews, with critics finding it even weaker than the first season. Joel Keller of Decider pointed out that the show loses its originality and becomes more predictable as it moves away from the distinctive accent that initially made it popular. Some reviewers have even stated that the season feels pointless and doesn’t add anything of value.
The show reappeared on Netflix on December 10th and, nearly two weeks later, remains a popular hit in the global Top 10. This demonstrates that despite criticisms of over-the-top acting and a weak storyline, it continues to attract a large worldwide audience.
‘The Accident‘ Turns Its Tragic Real-Life Story into Something Nonsensical
It’s puzzling how shows like The Accident, despite being criticized for poor acting and unbelievable storylines, often attract large viewers and get renewed, while genuinely great shows sometimes get canceled after just one season.
As a movie lover, I really struggled with The Accident. The fact that it’s based on a tragic real-life event where children died should have meant it was handled with sensitivity, but the show just went over the top with everything. It made it almost impossible to take seriously, which is a shame because I think that was the intention. Now, with the new season, it’s just doubled down on the same issues. After spending a whole season dealing with the fallout of the accident, I honestly don’t see what more they could possibly add to the story without inviting even more criticism and mockery. And, unfortunately, it’s definitely achieved that.
It’s currently unclear if The Accident will be renewed for a third season. However, Netflix often continues shows that become popular and stay in the Top 10 for a while, so there’s a decent chance it will be, even if the story might have already run its course.
