The Abandons: Netflix’s New Western Series Starring Lena Headey

The new Western series, The Abandons, is a hit on Netflix. It premiered on December 4th and features Lena Headey – famous for her role as Cersei Lannister in HBO’s Game of Thrones, where she was nominated for five Emmy Awards.

During the week of December 1st to 7th, the first season of The Abandons was the fourth most popular show on Netflix worldwide, with 7.3 million views. It came in after Stranger Things season 5, Sean Combs: The Reckoning season 1, and the first season of Stranger Things.

This show is performing exceptionally well on Netflix, outranking popular titles like seasons 2, 3, and 4 of Stranger Things, as well as The Rats: A Witcher Tale, The Beast in Me, and Matt Rife: Unwrapped. This week, The Abandons is a Top 10 hit in 75 countries, even reaching the number one spot in Romania.

Created by Kurt Sutter, the mind behind shows like The Shield and Sons of Anarchy, The Abandons stars Lena Headey as a deeply religious Irish woman in the 1850s. Unable to have children of her own, she creates a family by adopting four orphans and moves to Oregon. There, she finds herself in conflict with wealthy Europeans who claim ownership of her new home.

Joining Lena Headey in The Abandons are Gillian Anderson, a two-time Emmy winner known for The X-Files and The Crown, along with Nick Robinson, Diana Silvers, Aisling Franciosi, Lucas Till, Lamar Johnson, Natalia del Riego, and Patton Oswalt.

Although The Abandons has been popular on Netflix, critics haven’t been impressed, giving it a low 31% rating on Rotten Tomatoes. While the actors received praise for their performances, the show suffers from underdeveloped characters, unoriginal concepts, and a lack of compelling storytelling, making it a generally underwhelming watch.

Despite negative reviews from critics and viewers, The Abandons has been popular enough that it’s likely to get a second season.
