The 7 best X-comic books of the week (and some big X-Men news)

As a lifelong comic book enthusiast who has followed the X-Men saga since its early days, I must say that the current state of these iconic characters is nothing short of exhilarating! The nuanced portrayal of Magik in Jed MacKay’s X-Men series, where her intelligence is finally being recognized, truly resonates with me. It’s a testament to the depth and complexity of these characters that continue to evolve even after all these years.

The ongoing Marvel Comics series X-Men titled “From the Ashes” continues to unfold, offering not only fresh comics but also advancing existing storylines. Regardless of your preference, there’s an X-Men title tailored for you. For instance, X-Factor combines humor and emotion, while X-Force introduces a covert mutant team with a unique twist. Lastly, Wolverine: Revenge offers a brutal perspective from an alternate universe.

In this write-up, we’ll showcase the top 7 X-comics of the month, wrapping up with a dose of fresh X-Men comic book updates sure to delight fans! Let’s kick things off by diving into our pick for the best X-series of the month – a choice that wasn’t an easy one to make.

NYX No. 4 (Best of the Month)

  • Writers: Collin Kelly and Jackson Lanzing
  • Artist: Enid Balam

NYX continues to be the most profound comic series of the year, with Collin Kelly and Jackson Lanzing shedding light on an often overlooked mutant community. This narrative explores how lives can take unexpected turns, sometimes not for the best. In this instance, we follow David Alleyne, also known as Prodigy, who after Krakoan times, settled into a peaceful life as a professor, preferring to let others handle world-saving duties. However, when Kamala Khan finds herself in trouble, David feels compelled to act.

“It’s what we make of this moment they’ve forced. How to take their nightmare… and reignite the dream.”

Prodigy

This topic revolves around the concept of what it entails to be a minority, particularly in a world where they often face oppression and prejudice. Remaining silent in such circumstances isn’t an option for them due to the persistent attacks and discrimination. Now, we find ourselves facing two conflicting parties. Both are exhausted, but one side is more inclined towards peace than the other. This raises the question of who is right when neither can be deemed completely wrong.

The 7 best X-comic books of the week (and some big X-Men news)

Mystique (Best beginning)

  • Writer: Declan Shalvey
  • Artist: Declan Shalvey

As a passionate Mystique fan, I’m thrilled to see Declan Shalvey delivering the Raven we’ve been yearning for. Her shape-shifting skills are being utilized in astonishingly innovative ways, and Shalvey’s art breathes life into these transformations with creativity that never ceases to amaze. The cherry on top? Watching her outwit heavyweights like Nick Fury Jr. and S.H.I.E.L.D., leaving them scratching their heads. And the icing? A climax that’s so unpredictable, it’ll leave you in disbelief!

Funny. Dunno why it is… they always shoot the other guy.

Mystique

Uncanny X-Men No. 4 (Best ongoing story)

  • Writer: Gail Simone
  • Artist: David Marquez

Gail Simone introduced a powerful new villain who defeated both Wolverine and Rogue during their initial appearance, making this one of the most impressive debuts in comic book history. Moreover, when it came time to protect their new home and teammates, the new mutant group known as the Outliers showed great courage. Lastly, even though he was injured and blind, Logan demonstrates resilience by preparing for battle once more.

“When I hated myself, he taught me how to stop.”

Rogue

X-Men No. 6 (Best character development)

  • Writer: Jed MacKay
  • Artist: Netho Diaz

At long last, Magik is receiving the recognition she has earned, thanks to writers such as Leah Williams (What if… Magik Became Sorcerer Supreme) and Ashley Allen (X-Men: Blood Hunt: Magik)). Now in Jed MacKay’s X-Men, her intelligence is being appreciated, as it has long been hidden. A mutant with a significant secret is now under the watch of both Magik and Idie (codename/mutant name Temper), who are protecting them diligently.

If word got out, they’d make me take more responsibility around here.

Magik

Wolverine No. 2 (Best understanding of a character)

  • Writer: Saladin Ahmed
  • Artist: Martin Coccolo

In the latest installment of “Wolverine,” Saladin Ahmed delves into the compassionate nature of Logan, showcasing it in an unusual manner. While he demonstrated this aspect previously (as seen in issue No. 1), this time it was presented differently. Despite his lingering fury towards a past adversary, Wolverine had to suppress his anger to comprehend that they were not in control of their own actions.

Should Saladin Ahmed and Martin Coccolo continue crafting tales like these, it promises an enjoyable reading experience. Wolverine happens to be the writer’s preferred comic book character due to the intricacies of his character. Witnessing such depth skillfully portrayed is a delight that brings a grin to his face.

I can see the struggle in its eyes. I recognize it because I lived it.

Wolverine

Exceptional X-Men No. 2 (Best new characters)

  • Writer: Eve Ewing
  • Artist: Carmen Carnero

Despite repeatedly stating her retirement, Kitty Pryde persists in aiding the new mutants she’s encountered. She’s even introduced them to mutants of similar age. However, Kitty’s respite may be short-lived as Emma Frost steps back into the picture.

I’ll see to it that these young people get exactly what they need.

Emma Frost

Ultimate Wolverine is coming!

  • Writer: Chris Condon
  • Artist: Alessandro Cappuccio

In the revived Ultimate Universe, Wolverine – one of the most beloved mutants – has been missing from action, for a compelling reason. Given that he’s a key figure who could counteract The Maker, his absence is strategically orchestrated. Instead of being Weapon X, Logan undergoes transformation into the Ultimate Universe’s version of the Winter Soldier, facilitated by Magik, Colossus, and Omega Red.

Ultimate Wolverine is scheduled to be on sale on January 15, 2025.

Cosmic Jean Grey

  • Writer: Stephanie Phillips
  • Artist: Alessandro Miracolo

At the New York Comic-Con, author Stephanie Phillips revealed that Jean Grey’s Phoenix character will undergo a transformation. The writer referred to her as the “Cosmic Queen.” Previously, we’ve witnessed Jean close cosmic rifts and vanquish the Black Order alone. With this newfound power increase, every villain in the universe could potentially face trouble.
