The 5 highest-grossing horror movies of 2024 so far

As someone who has been following the horror genre for decades, I must say that the standout release of this year is none other than Oz Perkins’ masterpiece, “Longlegs.” The chilling atmosphere, the captivating performances, and the transformation Nicolas Cage underwent for his role are truly unparalleled. It’s a must-watch for any horror enthusiast, trust me, I’ve seen ’em all!

2024, man, what a year for horror fans like me! I’ve been fortunate enough to catch a new horror flick in theaters every month, and it’s been an absolute thrill. From under-the-radar indie films that left us on the edge of our seats to the return of some classic franchises, there’s never been a shortage of chills this year. However, just because there’s been a surge in horror movies doesn’t mean they’ve all been box office smashes. You might find it hard to believe which films of the genre have raked in the most money at the box office in 2024 so far.

Let’s seize the momentum from the successful debut of Alien: Romulus, and now, let’s explore the top five highest-earning horror films of 2024 thus far!

The 5 highest-grossing horror movies of 2024 so far

1. A Quiet Place: Day One

  • Release Date: June 28, 2024
  • Global Box Office: $261 million

As of now, the top-earning horror film of 2024 is titled “A Quiet Place: Day One.” It’s the third installment in the “Quiet Place” series, depicting the initial day when the world was compelled to fall silent. Luckily, this Paramount Pictures production was both a commercial hit and garnered praise from critics and viewers for its innovative approach to the franchise. It’s one of my favorite horror movies of the year due to its many compelling aspects.

In the film “Day One,” helmed by Michael Sarnoski (Pig), we follow a terminally ill woman named Sam (Lupita Nyong’o). On this particular day, she ventures to New York City with fellow hospice patients for an outing. However, chaos ensues as giant monsters attack the city. With a newfound determination, Sam embarks on a personal quest to obtain one final desire – a slice of pizza from Harlem. During her journey, she encounters a man named Eric (Joseph Quinn), with whom she forges an unexpected connection. The movie offers a compelling blend of suspense and emotion.

2. Alien: Romulus

  • Release Date: Aug. 16, 2024
  • Global Box Office: $108 million (and counting)

The film titled “Romulus,” hailing from the Alien series, is storming ahead to claim the top spot! It’s only been a few days since its release, yet it’s raking in massive earnings. Similar to “Day One,” “Romulus” has garnered mostly positive feedback, although it has stirred some debate among viewers. Directed by Fede Álvarez, known for “Evil Dead,” this is the seventh addition to the Alien franchise. It delves into nostalgia and fan service, sometimes perhaps a tad excessively, but overall offers an engaging viewing experience. The stars, Cailee Spaeny, David Jonsson, and Isabela Merced, deliver compelling performances, and the movie doesn’t hold back on some gruesomely vivid and graphic scenes.

Though there’s one glaring issue for me with Romulus, I still really enjoyed watching it and plan to see it again soon. It’s one of the best on this list, and I’m glad it’s seeing so much financial success. Soon enough, it will likely be the highest-grossing horror movie of the year. Go 20th Century Studios!

3. Longlegs

  • Release Date: July 12, 2024
  • Global Box Office: $100 million (and counting)

Among all the releases in the genre this year, none has captured my preference more than Oz Perkins’ crime-horror film, “Longlegs”. Starring Maika Monroe as FBI agent Lee, the movie delves into a chilling narrative of a serial killer who’s claimed numerous families’ lives over decades. As Agent Lee investigates, she uncovers her own connection to these horrific murders. The titular character, played brilliantly by Nicolas Cage, undergoes a remarkable transformation for his role. The acting is commendable, and the film successfully creates an eerie ambiance that will send shivers down your spine. I wholeheartedly suggest this film for any horror enthusiast.

With a worldwide box office earnings of $100 million, the independent film “Longlegs” has become the top-grossing indie movie of the year and set a new record for Neon, an achievement that is truly remarkable. Much like the film “Romulus,” “Longlegs” continues to be screened in cinemas, indicating it will likely accumulate more earnings at the box office, although I don’t anticipate it climbing higher in these rankings.

4. Trap

  • Release Date: Aug. 2, 2024
  • Global Box Office: $63 million (and counting)

A current horror film on the list that continues to play in cinemas is “Trap,” a new production by M. Night Shyamalan, which unfolds at a musical concert. In this movie, Josh Hartnett portrays Cooper, a father who takes his daughter to see her beloved singer. At the venue, anxiety escalates when he notices heightened security measures and discovers that the authorities have prepared a trap for a local serial killer lurking nearby. Despite its apparent silliness, “Trap” offers an amusing viewing experience due to its lack of pretentiousness – I personally found it quite enjoyable watching it in theaters.

Unlike “Alien: Romulus”, “Longlegs”, and “A Quiet Place: Day One”, the Warner Bros. film garnered mainly unfavorable reviews from critics, but audiences in general seemed to appreciate it more. This isn’t a groundbreaking or pioneering movie that will be remembered as one of the best in its genre, but it offers an enjoyable and engaging experience that holds your attention. At times, that’s all you require!

5. Night Swim

  • Release Date: Jan. 5, 2024
  • Global Box Office: $55 million

2024 saw a horror movie ranked fifth in box office earnings that I haven’t had the chance to watch yet. The film titled “Night Swim” seems to have an appealing plot, but its less-than-stellar reviews from both critics and common horror enthusiasts left me uninterested. Directed by Bryce McGuire, this was the first major release in the horror genre of that year, featuring a family who finds their pool is inhabited by supernatural forces. To be honest, writing that out makes it seem a bit simplistic, but the trailer did manage to pique my curiosity at least!

The movie titled “Night Swim” boasts recognizable stars like Wyatt Russell and Kerry Condon in its cast, but their presence couldn’t prevent it from falling short. Critics pointed out that the film lacked sufficient plot depth for a full-length feature, while some labeled the horror aspects as “ridiculous.” Despite these negative reviews, Night Swim managed to do well financially, which is a success for Universal Pictures.
