The 41 Most Anticipated Movies of 2025
As a film enthusiast with a knack for discerning the nuances of cinematic storytelling, I am genuinely excited about the upcoming slate of films that will grace our screens in 2024. The diversity and depth of these productions promise to cater to a wide range of tastes and sensibilities.
2025 is shaping up to have an above-average number of remakes, reboots, sequels, and adaptations among its major releases. Yet, like any year, there’s a wealth of exciting new projects on the horizon – from independent films to those based on established intellectual properties (IP) and potential blockbusters. Here are some of the most eagerly awaited movies set for release in 2025.
Back in Action (Jan. 17)
In a new Netflix production directed by Seth Gordon (known for “Baywatch” and “Identity Thief”), Jamie Foxx and Cameron Diaz team up once more, having last worked together in 2014’s “Annie”. Their roles this time see them as former CIA agents who are drawn back into the world of spies after being unmasked. Interestingly, Cameron Diaz came back from acting hiatus to take on this specific character.
I’m Still Here (Jan. 17)
As a movie enthusiast, I recently had the privilege of watching “Brazil’s submission for Best International Feature Film at the upcoming Academy Awards.” This political drama left a profound impact at the Venice International Film Festival this year, garnering widespread critical acclaim. The performance that truly stood out was Fernanda Torres portraying Eunice Paiva, a real-life activist whose husband, a dissident politician, mysteriously vanished in 1971 during Brazil’s military dictatorship.
One of Them Days (Jan. 17)
In a new comedic film, SZA takes her first acting steps alongside Keke Palmer. They portray a pair of close friends and flatmates who find themselves in a wild scramble to gather some urgent rent money at the last minute. The storyline is reminiscent of the movie Friday. The screenplay is penned by Syreeta Singleton, the producer of the two-season comedy series Rap Sh!t, marking her first feature film writing credit.
Wolf Man (Jan. 17)
Leigh Whannell’s 2020 revival of “The Invisible Man” sparked renewed interest in the classic Universal Monsters series. Now, Whannell is back with a fresh take on the 1941 movie “The Wolf Man,” featuring Christopher Abbott as a man who transforms into a werewolf following an attack at his family’s farmhouse where his father mysteriously vanished. Julia Garner shares the screen with him as his spouse.
Presence (Jan. 24)
From a film enthusiast’s perspective, stepping into Stephen Soderbergh’s most recent masterpiece, I find myself drawn to its intriguing perspective – that of a spirit subtly haunting a tranquil suburban abode, observing the inhabitants as they go about their daily lives.
Love Hurts (Feb. 7)
As a devoted cinephile, I can’t help but express my awe at Ke Huy Quan’s triumphant return in “Everything Everywhere All at Once.” This action-comedy beautifully leverages his unique ability to blend exceptional martial arts prowess with an authentic, heartfelt sincerity. In the film, I found myself cheering for Quan as he portrays a friendly real estate agent, whose life is turned upside down when his criminal brother reemerges, compelling him to confront his past as a lethal assassin.
Bridget Jones: Mad About the Boy (Feb. 13)
According to Helen Fielding’s 2013 novel, the upcoming fourth Bridget Jones movie set to stream on Peacock features the return of Renee Zellweger, Hugh Grant, and Emma Thompson (with Colin Firth appearing as a ghost), and introduces two new romantic interests: the charming young character Roxster (played by Leo Woodall) and Mr. Wallaker (portrayed by Chiwetel Ejiofor), an attractive teacher at Bridget’s children’s school.
Captain America: Brave New World (Feb. 14)
This upcoming Captain America film, released after 2016’s “Civil War,” continues the storyline initiated by “The Falcon and the Winter Soldier” on TV screens. It marks Anthony Mackie’s debut as the big-screen Captain America, taking over from Chris Evans. In a different turn of events, Harrison Ford will assume the role previously held by the late William Hurt, portraying Thaddeus “Thunderbolt” Ross, who is now the president of the United States and also appears as the Red Hulk in this movie.
Paddington in Peru (Feb. 14)
Unfortunately, Paul King was preoccupied with working on “Wonka” and couldn’t come back to helm the third movie in the charming series featuring a chatty bear who adores marmalade sandwiches (with Emily Mortimer now assuming Sally Hawkins’ previous role). However, critiques from overseas have generally been favorable for this adventure-comedy, as it follows Paddington’s journey back to his native Peru with the Brown family to meet his Aunt Lucy.
The Monkey (Feb. 21)
Osgood Perkins, Anthony Perkins’ son, has been producing some strong horror films, but it wasn’t until this year that he gained wider recognition with his successful movie titled Longlegs. His latest film, which combines dark comedy elements, is based on Stephen King’s 1980 short story of the same name. This tale revolves around a cursed antique toy monkey and the two brothers who are determined to annihilate it forever.
The Legend of Ochi (Feb. 28)
In this A24 fantasy film, the story revolves around a rural village’s young inhabitant named Yuri (Helena Zengel). She encounters an infant ochi, a species often feared for its forest dwelling, which has been abandoned. Yuri embarks on a journey to return it to the pack from which it originated. Alongside her are Willem Dafoe, Finn Wolfhard, and Emily Watson in supporting roles.
Sinners (March 7)
In a fresh departure for filmmaker Ryan Coogler, his latest production marks his first venture into horror genre. Michael B. Jordan takes on dual roles as siblings who seek refuge from their haunting past by returning home, only to encounter an even more ominous presence. The trailer offers no definitive explanation of the malevolence at play, but it’s evident that supernatural entities such as demons or spirits are likely involved.
Snow White (March 21)
In a fresh take on the 1937 animated film “Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs,” written jointly with Greta Gerwig, Marc Webb’s version features Rachel Zegler as Snow White, while Gal Gadot portrays the Wicked Queen. However, this production has been embroiled in controversy, ranging from the color-blind casting of Zegler to the utilization of CGI for dwarfs primarily played by non-dwarf actors, to the open disagreements between the leads concerning the conflict in Gaza.
Alto Knights (March 21)
In this biographical crime drama by Barry Levinson and Nicholas Pileggi, who also co-wrote “Goodfellas”, Robert De Niro takes on dual roles, portraying Vito Genovese and Frank Costello – two infamous Italian-American gangsters from the Luciano family who were known for their fierce rivalry.
The Amateur (April 11)
As a devoted movie enthusiast, I can’t help but share my excitement about a gripping thriller that I recently came across. This film is an adaptation of Robert Littell’s 1981 novel, and it tells the story from the perspective of a CIA cryptographer, portrayed brilliantly by Rami Malek. In the movie, my character seeks revenge against the terrorists who took the life of my wife. However, instead of waiting for the agency to act, I use my exceptional skills in codebreaking to coerce them into training me, turning the tables on those who wronged me. It’s a captivating journey that keeps you on the edge of your seat!
Mickey 17 (April 18)
Approximately six years following Bong Joon-ho’s “Parasite” being awarded the Best Picture Oscar, we’re now getting a glimpse of his long-awaited studio production that serves as a follow-up. Based on Edward Ashton’s sci-fi novel “Mickey7”, this film features Robert Pattinson in the lead role, portraying an “expendable” – an individual who, upon death, receives a new body complete with past memories. However, a twist arises when one of Mickey’s bodies unexpectedly survives, resulting in a confrontation between two Roberts Pattinsons.
A Big Bold Beautiful Journey (May 9)
Originally scripted by Seth Reiss for “The Blacklist,” this romantic fantasy is now set to hit theaters under the direction of South Korean-born filmmaker and video essayist Kogonada, known for movies like “Columbus” and “After Yang.” Starring Margot Robbie and Colin Farrell, this production promises to be one of Kogonada’s most popular and accessible films to date.
Golden (May 9)
Michel Gondry’s most recent production is a musical film about growing up, taking place during the summer of 1977 and influenced by Pharrell Williams’ experiences living in Virginia Beach’s Atlantis Apartments. Kelvin Harrison Jr. portrays Williams, with Halle Bailey, Da’Vine Joy Randolph, Brian Tyree Henry, and a host of others joining the cast. Additionally, Williams collaborated with Benj Pasek and Justin Paul, who are renowned for their work on La La Land and Dear Evan Hansen, on the film’s soundtrack.
Mission: Impossible – The Final Reckoning (May 23)
In a unique production move, the eighth “Mission: Impossible” film, helmed by Christopher McQuarrie, was filmed simultaneously with its predecessor, “Dead Reckoning.” This means that along with the regular MIF team, this upcoming movie will reintroduce series newcomers Hayley Atwell, Esai Morales, and Pom Klementieff. A recent sighting of Tom Cruise gripping onto the wings of an overturned flying biplane hints at the typical thrilling stunts that we can expect from this franchise’s next installment.
Ballerina (June 6)
In a fresh take on the John Wick film series, this spin-off emphasizes the dance-like combat sequences reminiscent of ballet, by centering around a ballerina-turned-assassin embarking on a quest for vengeance over her father’s death. Positioned between the third and fourth installments of the Wick saga, it features Ana de Armas, Gabriel Byrne, and Norman Reedus, as well as returning cast members Anjelica Huston, Lance Reddick, Ian McShane, and Keanu Reeves himself.
Elio (June 13)
Pixar’s newest original movie centers around an 11-year-old shy extraterrestrial enthusiast who gets blasted into outer space for an unforgettable journey when he’s mistaken as Earth’s envoy. In the Cosmic Assembly, a kind of interstellar UN, representatives from various alien species gather to address universal crises—and now, Elio finds himself among them.
28 Years Later (June 20)
In a fresh take on the zombie apocalypse genre, Danny Boyle’s 2002 movie “28 Days Later” introduced an eerie concept: what if the undead were capable of sprinting? Now, Boyle is returning as director for the third film within this universe, marking the beginning of a planned trilogy. The original screenwriter Alex Garland and star Cillian Murphy are also rejoining the team.
F1 (June 27)
In the sports drama directed by Joseph Kosinski, who is known for Top Gun: Maverick, and produced in partnership with FIA, an ex-Formula One racer, portrayed by Brad Pitt, mentors a promising newcomer, Damson Idris. Superman (July 11)
The upcoming series of films in the DC Universe, titled “Chapter One: Gods and Monsters,” kicks off with James Gunn’s adaptation of DC Comics’ famous hero. David Corenswet portrays a 25-year-old version of the main character, while Rachel Brosnahan takes on the role of Lois Lane, Skyler Gisondo plays Jimmy Olsen, and Nicholas Hoult steps into the shoes of Lex Luthor.
Untitled I Know What You Did Last Summer sequel (July 18)
It’s been more than 25 years since we last saw a theatrical sequel to the original slasher movie, “I Still Know What You Did Last Summer.” The upcoming fourth part in the series, which is jointly written and directed by Jennifer Kaytin Robinson (known for “Someone Great” and “Do Revenge”), is rumored to bring back Freddie Prinze Jr.
The Fantastic Four: First Steps (July 25)
It’s widely accepted that the Fantastic Four, who are among Marvel Comics’ most renowned superheroes, haven’t received a satisfactory cinematic portrayal until now. The upcoming MCU adaptation might buck this trend, featuring a 1960s-inspired blend of retrofuturism and an ensemble cast consisting of Pedro Pascal, Vanessa Kirby, Joseph Quinn, and Ebon Moss-Bachrach as Mr. Fantastic, Invisible Woman, Human Torch, and the Thing respectively.
The Naked Gun (Aug. 1)
In a fresh take on the beloved crime spoof-comedy series, Akiva Schaffer (a member of The Lonely Island) is set to direct. Liam Leeson steps into the shoes of Leslie Nielsen’s character’s son, who originally played Detective Sergeant Frank Drebin. Additionally, the cast includes Pamela Anderson, Paul Walter Hauser, Kevin Durand, Danny Huston, CCH Pounder, and others.
Freakier Friday (Aug. 8)
For the follow-up of the 2003 comedy about body swapping, which was adapted from a children’s book, Lindsay Lohan, Jamie Lee Curtis, Mark Harmon, Chad Michael Murray, Christina Vidal, and many other original cast members are reprising their roles.
HIM (Sept. 19)
In this upcoming sports-horror movie directed by Justin Tipping, Jordan Peele serves as the producer. Originally named “Goat,” the film revolves around an aging athletic celebrity who mentors a promising newcomer. Marlon Wayans has been cast in the lead role.

Now, she returns to the screen with an innovative sci-fi musical film that takes cues from the 1935 classic ‘Bride of Frankenstein’. The leading role of the bride is played by Jessie Buckley, while Christian Bale steps into the role of Frankenstein’s creature.
Roofman (October TBA)
Director Derek Cianfrance, known for films like “Blue Valentine” and “The Place Beyond the Pines”, hasn’t released a movie since 2016’s “The Light Between Oceans”. His upcoming project, a crime drama biopic, is generating much excitement. The film centers around Jeffrey Manchester, portrayed by Channing Tatum, who was a real-life spree robber that targeted McDonald’s in the early 2000s by drilling holes and dropping through the roof to steal from them.
Michael (Oct. 3)
Director Antoine Fuqua is taking on a broad biographical film about Michael Jackson, with Jackson’s nephew Jaafar portraying the iconic pop star. In terms of the representation of sexual abuse allegations against Jackson, producer Graham King has stated that they aim to “portray him as human, without sugarcoating and deliver an honest, impartial story.” The film also features Colman Domingo in the role of patriarch Joe Jackson and Nia Long as Michael’s mother, Katherine Jackson.
Bugonia (Nov. 7)
Yorgos Lanthimos’ recent film, titled “Poor Things” or “The Favourite,” is actually a new take on the 2003 South Korean movie “Save the Green Planet!” The story unfolds as two believers of conspiracy theories (one portrayed by Jesse Plemons from “Kinds of Kindness”) abduct a powerful CEO (Emma Stone, who has worked with Lanthimos before). They believe she’s an extraterrestrial intent on destroying Earth.
The Running Man (Nov. 21)
In this movie, we have another screen interpretation of Stephen King’s 1982 dystopian novel, originally published under the pen name Richard Bachman. Here, Glen Powell takes on the role of Ben Richards, a contestant in a game show that revolves around evading assassins – a scenario that seems to resonate with Powell’s past roles.
Wicked: For Good (Nov. 21)
This year’s movie version of the well-known stage musical “Wicked,” derived from Gregory Maguire’s 1995 novel, limited its scope to the initial act, culminating in a suspenseful twist after the rendition of “Defying Gravity.” The upcoming sequel, also helmed by Jon M. Chu, will carry on the narrative of Elphaba (played by Cynthia Erivo) and Galinda (portrayed by Ariana Grande), whose roles as the Wicked Witch of the West and Glinda the Good respectively test their deep-rooted friendship.
Avatar: Fire and Ash (Dec. 19)
As James Cameron intends, there are at least three more Avatar films left in the series. The third film, titled Fire and Ash, started production alongside 2022’s The Way of Water. As usual, Daniel Craig reappears in the role of detective Benoit Blanc.
The Wedding Banquet (TBA)

In this modern adaptation, friends Min (Han Gi-chan) and Angela (Kelly Marie Tran) choose to stage a sham marriage during a traditional Korean wedding ceremony. The purpose behind this decision is twofold: Min aims to secure a green card and remain in the U.S. with his partner Chris (Bowen Yang), while Angela and her girlfriend Lee (Lily Gladstone) intend to raise funds for In Vitro Fertilization treatments.
