Tonight’s Oscars have been packed with groundbreaking achievements. In a night filled with numerous competitive categories, the winners such as the crew behind “Flow”, the costume designer for “Wicked”, and Zoe Saldaña from “Emilia Pérez” all made history by becoming the first recipients of their respective awards at this ceremony when their names were announced to receive their Oscars.

Flow becomes the first Latvian film to win an Oscar

In a groundbreaking moment, “Flow,” a movie centered around cats, claimed the title of Best Animated Feature at the Academy Awards. This victory marked Latvia’s inaugural Oscar win overall. Notably, this visually captivating film without dialogue became the first independent production to secure the award for Best Animated Film at the Oscars. Additionally, it was recognized with a nomination in the category of Best International Feature.

Wicked’s Paul Tazewell is the first Black man to win for costume design

Paul Tazewell, who was earlier nominated for his costume work in Steven Spielberg’s “West Side Story”, won an Oscar in the category of Costume Design. In his speech, he expressed that he was the first Black man to receive this specific Oscar award, and shared his pride about it. He also acknowledged his inspirations from his ‘Ozian muses’, Cynthia and Ariana, who happen to be the stars of “Wicked”. Interestingly, Cynthia Erivo and Ariana Grande gave him a standing ovation. Throughout his career, Tazewell has made a significant mark on Broadway, designing costumes for acclaimed shows like “The Color Purple” and “In the Heights”.

Zoe Saldaña becomes first American of Dominican origin to win an Oscar

Zoe Saldaña has shone brightly during awards season, ultimately receiving the Oscar for Best Supporting Actress for her role in Emilia Pérez. In her acceptance speech, she discussed her family’s immigration story. “My grandmother arrived in this country in 1961,” she explained. “I am proud to be the child of immigrant parents who had dreams, dignity, and hardworking hands, and I am the first American of Dominican descent to win an Academy Award. I know I won’t be the last.” Additionally, she became part of a select group of winners who were recognized for their performances in another language and from a film nominated for Best International Feature Film.
