The 15 best fantasy/sci-fi shows of 2024, ranked worst to best!

As a seasoned fantasy and sci-fi aficionado who’s spent countless hours immersed in the realms of Middle Earth, Westeros, and beyond, I must say this year’s genre TV shows list left me both captivated and confounded.

Each Wednesday on Take the Black podcast at WinterIsComing.net, our team discusses recent updates in the realms of science fiction, fantasy, films, television, and literature. Once a year, we dedicate one episode to examining the 15 most significant TV series in the genre that have emerged during the past year. We rank these shows from what we consider the least impressive to the most outstanding, understanding that “least” and “most” are subjective terms.

  1. Shōgun
  2. Arcane
  3. Interview With The Vampire season 2
  4. The Penguin
  5. Fallout
  6. 3 Body Problem
  7. The Boys season 4
  8. Silo
  9. Agatha All Along
  10. House of the Dragon season 2
  11. Dune: Prophecy
  12. The Walking Dead: The Ones Who Live
  13. What We Do In The Shadows season 6
  14. The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power season 2
  15. Avatar: The Last Airbender

Every year, Daniel and I continuously debate our TV show lineup, and occasionally we need to make concessions and compromises. For example, I haven’t watched Arcane yet, but Daniel adores it, so I expected it to be near the top of our list. Similarly, Daniel hasn’t seen Interview With The Vampire, but I think it’s an outstanding series, so I wouldn’t be surprised if it ranked high on ours as well.

To put it simply, after all the discussions this year, there are some placements in the list that sit awkwardly with me. Deep within, I wish “Dune: Prophecy” had ranked higher, despite my appreciation for “The Three-Body Problem,” I’m taken aback by its high placement. However, that’s the very nature of consensus-based ranking – it can often be unpredictable!
