I’ve noticed romance is a staple in pretty much every kind of story, throughout history. Because of that, it’s actually hard for a story focused solely on romance to really stand out. Anime, in particular, often has trouble grabbing viewers with romances as the main focus, though it’s definitely not impossible to make a truly great one.
Now is a fantastic time to be a romance anime fan! Recent series like The Apothecary Diaries and Blue Box show that you don’t need to completely change the classic romance formulas to create something new and exciting. With the genre becoming increasingly popular, there’s already a wealth of great anime to enjoy, and even more amazing love stories on the way.
Often overlooked, Blue Box is a standout anime from 2024 that uniquely blends competitive sports with a charming love story. It follows Taiki Inomata, a badminton player with a crush on Chinatsu Kano, a star basketball player at his school. When a surprising turn of events leads to Chinatsu living with Taiki’s family, they begin to develop a close relationship, encouraging each other to excel in their sports.
The romance manga Blue Box quickly gained popularity by leaning into classic genre elements, like the tension of characters living together. While it doesn’t shy away from familiar tropes, Blue Box feels original thanks to its realistic portrayal of growing up and navigating young love. Although sports are primarily a setting for the romance, they’re also central to how Taiki and Chinatsu develop their connection.
Among the many new romance anime that came out in 2024, Yakuza Fiancé stands out as one of the best. The story follows Yoshino Somei and Kirishima Miyama, whose families—the Somei and Miyama—end a long-running rivalry by arranging their marriage after years of conflict. Yoshino initially accepts her situation, but things change when Kirishima reveals a side of himself that completely alters their relationship.
Yoshino is engaged to a cruel man and refuses to be his victim. She devises a plan to make him fall in love with her, intending to deliver a devastating rejection. But as they get to know each other, an unexpected connection forms, and they discover surprising common ground, leading to a relationship far from ordinary.
Nina the Starry Bride is a recently released anime romance aimed at adult women. The story follows Nina, an orphan who has always had to fend for herself. Her life changes dramatically when she’s taken to the palace of Prince Azure Seth Fortna and asked to become the new priestess, stepping into the role of someone who has passed away.
The story of Nina the Starry Bride centers on a woman adjusting to a changed life and finding herself as she falls for Prince Azure. Although Nina’s romantic feelings are important, the series is really about her quest for independence and her worry about losing her own identity.
“Tadaima Okaeri” tells the story of Masaki and Hiromu Fujioshi, a couple hoping to build a peaceful life and family. However, prejudice against Omegas creates significant obstacles in their relationship, making their journey to happiness more difficult than most.
Hiromu always supports his beloved wife, Masaki, and is quick to defend her. The heartwarming story of Tadaima Okaeri follows this sweet couple as they build a family and deepen their relationship. What makes Tadaima Okaeri stand out is its focus on the love within a family, which is a welcome change from typical romance anime.
Released in Summer 2024, The Magical Girl and the Evil Lieutenant is a charming love story. It follows Shun Miller, a feared and ruthless lieutenant who works for a villainous organization determined to cause chaos in the city. Everything changes for him when he encounters Byakuya Mimori, an adorable but incredibly powerful magical girl.
Despite being enemies on opposing sides of a conflict, Shun finds himself falling for Byakuya’s kind and innocent nature. Instead of fighting her as he should, he dedicates his time to protecting Byakuya and showing her affection. While The Magical Girl and the Evil Lieutenant doesn’t offer a particularly original plot, it’s a genuinely heartwarming and sweet romance anime that stands out among recent releases.
When the anime 365 Days to the Wedding came out in Fall 2022, its charming and sweet story quickly gained attention. The show follows Takuya Oohara and Rika Honjouji, two introverted people content with being single, whose peaceful lives are turned upside down by a possible job transfer. To avoid being relocated, they decide to pretend to be engaged for an entire year.
Neither Takuya nor Rika thought their fake engagement would turn into genuine feelings, but it surprisingly does. While many workplace romance stories exist, 365 Days to the Wedding offers a simple and refreshing take compared to more complex anime. Those who enjoyed Wotakoi will likely appreciate the gentle, gradually developing relationship between Takuya and Rika.
The shojo anime 7th Time Loop is a new entry in the popular ‘reborn as a villainess’ genre. This romantic story combines time travel and reincarnation, following Rishe Irmgard Weitzner, a young noblewoman who keeps reliving her life. Unfortunately, Rishe has died at the age of 20 in every life she’s lived so far.
Rishe has lived six lives already, and this time, she’s determined to simply enjoy herself instead of trying to change destiny. But her plans are disrupted when Crown Prince Arnold Hein proposes! Suddenly engaged to someone she considers an enemy, Rishe begins to see a different side of the prince and unexpectedly starts to fall in love. 7th Time Loop is a charming enemies-to-lovers story perfect for anyone who loves romance.
Okay, I have to say, A Sign of Affection is easily my favorite romance anime of Winter 2024! The animation is just gorgeous, and the story is so sweet – it’s set in a typical Japanese college, which makes it feel really relatable. But what really grabbed me is the main character, Yuki Itose. She’s incredibly endearing, and it’s so refreshing to see a protagonist who’s fluent in Japanese sign language and reads lips – it’s a really unique and heartwarming way to tell a story about navigating the world as a deaf person. Honestly, I’m completely hooked!
Seeing life from Yuki’s perspective during college is a deeply engaging experience that highlights the power of kindness and genuine connection. The strongest part of A Sign of Affection is how realistically and respectfully it portrays the Deaf community, all while telling a captivating love story.
The new series, A Condition Called Love, beautifully captures the joys and challenges of first love. It follows Hotaru Hinase, a high school student who’s never been in love, and doesn’t quite understand the feeling. That changes when she meets Saki Hananoi, a charming classmate who quickly develops feelings for her after she shows him a simple act of kindness.
This series centers on Hananoi’s pursuit of Hotaru, as she experiences new and confusing emotions. Their relationship feels genuine and relatable, showing them work through personal challenges and discover who they are, both as individuals and as a couple. A Condition Called Love is a great choice for viewers who prefer realistic romance stories.
The BL series Cherry Magic! Thirty Years of Virginity Can Make You a Wizard?! centers around Kiyoshi Adachi, a mind-reader whose ability activates through physical contact. When he accidentally touches his boss, Yuichi Kurosawa, he discovers Kurosawa has romantic feelings for him.
Cherry Magic! tells the sweet story of a developing romance between Adachi and Kurosawa. Adachi slowly learns more about himself, while Kurosawa quickly falls in love with him. Though it takes time, Adachi eventually reciprocates, leading to a truly heartwarming connection. The anime’s beautiful animation does a fantastic job of showing what the characters are feeling, often better than words can. Cherry Magic! is highly recommended for fans of BL (Boys’ Love) and anyone who enjoys a charming workplace romance.
