Transformations are a popular trope in storytelling, especially in anime like Dragon Ball Z and Sailor Moon. When done well, these changes can powerfully show a character’s development and even significantly impact the anime’s world. Some transformations, like Luffy’s Gear 5 or Ken Kaneki becoming a ghoul, are truly memorable and well-regarded. However, not all anime transformations are equally impressive.
While some transformations initially generated excitement, they didn’t ultimately live up to the hype. Either newer, stronger transformations appeared, or they simply didn’t have the intended effect on the story. Though these transformations still have their supporters, the anime world has since produced many more impressive ones.
Eren’s Transformations Only Get Wilder in Attack on Titan
Eren Yeager’s Attack Titan transformation might not seem as impressive now, but it was a huge deal when it first appeared in the anime. It was a pivotal moment for the character, similar to how the Super Saiyan transformation impacted Dragon Ball Z, and it gave him the power he needed to face overwhelming challenges. Eren continued to rely on this form until he unlocked an entirely new ability.
Although impressive, Eren’s Attack Titan form isn’t as crucial as people think. It helped him in battles against other Titan Shifters, but it wasn’t the power that would actually change the world. To achieve his goals, Eren ultimately relied on the Founding Titan and its ability to initiate the Rumbling, rendering the Attack Titan almost irrelevant by the time that happened – it was a leftover from earlier fights.
All Might’s Muscles Couldn’t Save Society From Its Real Problems

In My Hero Academia, All Might’s muscular form is important mainly for what it represents on a personal and symbolic level. It visually showed how his physical body finally matched his strong heroic spirit, and it allowed him to mask his inner doubts and weaknesses. This created a powerful scene when Deku realized All Might wasn’t always the powerful figure he seemed to be, witnessing his transformation from muscular to his weakened form.
While All Might’s powerful physique was impressive, it didn’t address the deeper problems within society, making his strength less impactful than many believed. He was incredibly strong, but he operated within a flawed system that unfairly branded those with quirks deemed undesirable as villains, while heroes often acted as if they alone defined justice. No matter how hard he hit, All Might couldn’t solve this fundamental contradiction.
Eternal Sailor Moon Was Just More of the Same
The anime Sailor Moon is hugely responsible for making the magical girl genre popular and defining its style, but even such a groundbreaking show has some missteps. While Sailor Moon’s initial transformation was fantastic, some later ones didn’t quite live up to expectations. For example, the Eternal Sailor Moon transformation felt over-the-top and lacked elegance.
Many fans weren’t impressed with the colors and accessories used for Eternal Sailor Moon, with some even finding the design unattractive. The feathers, in particular, feel out of place. Plus, Usagi’s most impactful transformation already happened earlier, so Eternal Sailor Moon’s design doesn’t feel as special or magical in comparison.
Shonen Anime Fans Have Seen Okarun’s Turbo Granny Powers Before
Ken Takakura, who goes by Okarun, is one half of a fun pair in the Dandadan anime. Similar to Momo Ayase, Ken gained abilities in Episode 1 of Dandadan when he fought the Serpo aliens – he developed spiritual powers as a result. While his spirit form looked impressive, the initial excitement surrounding his powers quickly faded.
Ken’s Turbo Granny transformation is a useful ability in Dandadan, but it’s starting to feel predictable. This is a problem for a show that’s known for being fresh and inventive. While the changing opponents and allies – like teaming up with Aira against the composers – do add some variety, the Turbo Granny power-up itself is losing its impact.
Sasuke’s Curse Seal Stage 2 Got Buried Under Naruto Powerscaling
The Curse Seal transformation in Naruto doesn’t feel as impactful as it once did, not because it was poorly designed, but because the anime quickly moved past it. While it initially added to the dark atmosphere of Orochimaru’s experiments and had its moment, it now feels like an outdated ability that isn’t really used anymore.
Sasuke’s transformation using the second stage of his Curse Seal was meant to put him on equal footing with Naruto’s Tailed Beast form, but it ultimately felt like a forced plot element. The design itself was also strange and unsettling, making Sasuke appear monstrous to highlight his increasing power. Now, this form feels less impressive because he later gained even more powerful abilities like the Mangekyo Sharingan and Rinnegan, which overshadowed it.
One of Bleach’s Greatest Transformations Had Shocking Drawbacks

Throughout much of Bleach, characters transform by changing the form of their Zanpakuto with Shikai or Bankai, or by Arrancars revealing their original Hollow forms during fights. While these transformations generally worked well, Captain Sajin Komamura’s stood out as underwhelming. In a desperate attempt to gain power, he offered his heart to the leader of his canine clan, but the resulting change wasn’t worth such a significant sacrifice.
Sajin made a huge sacrifice to become an immortal human, but it only allowed him to defeat Bambietta Basterbine – a rather small victory. Even worse, he immediately turned back into a helpless wolf, leaving him unable to fight Yhwach. It felt like Sajin unnecessarily removed himself from the story for a minor, temporary ability, which was a disappointing use of his character.
One Piece’s Transformations Underwhelm Compared to Gear 5
The Sulong transformation in One Piece is decent, but it doesn’t really stand out compared to all the other powerful abilities in the series. One Piece is full of unique powers, making it hard for any one ability to be truly memorable, and Sulong just isn’t strong enough to rise above the rest. It’s essentially a mild werewolf form for the Mink tribe, like Carrot, who impressed fans with her powerful, evolved state.
Sulong often feels like a minor detail in the vast world of One Piece’s abilities and transformations, and it hasn’t had much of an effect on the story. A key reason it doesn’t stand out is that none of the Straw Hat crew actually use it, which means it rarely appears during crucial battles. This makes it seem less impactful compared to major upgrades like Franky’s cyborg enhancements, Sanji’s Raid Suit, and especially, Gear 5.
Nezuko’s Adult Demon Form Adds Nothing to Demon Slayer’s Story
Transformations are rare in the Demon Slayer anime, making each one particularly important. Unfortunately, many of those transformations haven’t been very impactful or haven’t quite lived up to expectations, like Gyokko’s final form during his fight with Muichiro Tokito. Even Nezuko Kamado’s transformation, despite her effort, hasn’t fully showcased the potential of these changes in Demon Slayer.
I was absolutely floored when Nezuko unleashed her full, grown-up power in the Entertainment District! It was incredible seeing her go toe-to-toe with Daki, Upper Moon Six. She could really beat Daki with that form, but it came at a huge cost – Nezuko lost control, and Tanjiro and she both hated that. Honestly, ever since then, Nezuko’s adult form hasn’t felt as important, because Tanjiro’s been getting so much stronger on his own. It’s like his power-ups are way more meaningful now.
Super Saiyan 3 Didn’t Do Anything Dragon Ball Z Hadn’t Already Done Before
Dragon Ball Z absolutely deserves its popularity and the praise it receives, especially for introducing the iconic Super Saiyan transformation during the Namek Saga. This moment really changed anime, inspiring countless other shows to create similar power-up sequences for their heroes. Villains even started copying Frieza’s tactic of transforming to become stronger. However, even though Dragon Ball Z pioneered this trend, it doesn’t always execute it flawlessly.
I remember when Super Saiyan transformations were amazing! But honestly, after the initial shock, the later forms just felt…more of the same. Super Saiyan 2 was just a power boost, which, okay, we kinda expected. And then Super Saiyan 3? It basically did the same thing again! I really felt like by the third level, they needed to shake things up drastically, but it just didn’t happen. It even felt a bit weaker, to be honest. By the time Dragon Ball Super came around, the whole power-up system had already moved on with Super Saiyan God and beyond, leaving those earlier forms feeling a little…forgotten.
Solo Leveling Made a Series Out of One Overrated Transformation

I’ve been following Solo Leveling, and honestly, it’s sparked a lot of debate! Some people absolutely love it – they see it as a really satisfying power fantasy with a main character, Jinwoo Sung, who just steadily gets stronger. But others think it’s a bit overhyped. A lot of the discussion really comes down to Jinwoo himself, because he’s so central to everything that makes Solo Leveling tick – both the awesome parts and the things that don’t quite land.
I see a lot of people really enjoy Jinwoo as this incredibly powerful action hero, and he definitely has a strong presence. However, I personally think his whole transformation from a weak guy to a super-muscular hero is a bit overblown – honestly, it feels like the most overrated transformation I’ve seen in anime. He basically just is power; he relies on his strength and aura, and that seems to be the whole point. But it feels a little too simple, almost like it’s just showing off, and it doesn’t really offer much depth beyond the idea that believing in yourself is important.
