Texas rap has been making a huge comeback in recent years, launching several major hip-hop artists. Names like BigXthaPlug, Don Toliver, That Mexican OT, and Monaleo have put Texas back on the map as a leading force in the 2020s hip-hop scene.
Over the last few decades, Texas rappers and producers have played a huge role in shaping hip-hop. They’ve been behind iconic innovations like DJ Screw’s unique “chopped and screwed” style, and more recently, the booming, bass-driven trap music coming out of Dallas.
Before we look at the rankings, it’s important to explain why DJ Screw isn’t included. He was hugely influential in Texas hip-hop, but I see him more as a groundbreaking producer who created the chopped-and-screwed style, rather than a rapper himself.
Houston dominates the rankings as the city that helped shape Texas hip-hop culture for generations
These rankings heavily showcase Houston’s major impact on hip-hop in Texas, though artists from all over the state were evaluated.
Over the years, both the Dallas-Fort Worth and South Texas areas have been home to important rappers like The D.O.C. and Big Tuck. Their work has been key in developing hip-hop throughout Texas.
Other artists who were close to making the list include Slim Thug, BigXthaPlug, The D.O.C., Big Tuck, and That Mexican OT.
These rankings consider a rapper’s impact, skill with words, career length, cultural significance, complete body of work, and how much they’ve contributed to hip-hop in Texas.

1. Scarface
I believe Scarface, a member of the Geto Boys and a Houston native, is the greatest rapper to ever come out of Texas. He’s known for both his work with the group and his successful solo career, and is widely considered one of the best rappers of the last thirty years.
When you look at impact, sales, songwriting, or just lyrical skill, Scarface is considered the greatest rapper in Texas history. He also has an incredibly extensive and impressive body of work – one of the largest in all of Texas hip-hop.
Over the last thirty-five years, he’s released several highly acclaimed Texas rap albums, such as The Diary from 1994 and The Fix from 2002.
Billboard ranked Scarface as one of the 20 best rappers of all time on their list from 2023.
2. Bun B
Any list of the best rappers from Texas has to include the iconic UGK. Bun B’s long career, consistent quality, and skillful lyrics have made him a hugely respected name in Southern hip-hop.
Even after UGK’s most popular years, Bun B continued to be a successful solo artist and a leading figure for hip-hop in the South. He’s one of the few Texas rappers who has stayed well-known and highly respected by fans of all ages.
UGK and Bun B have had a huge impact on Southern hip-hop, shaping the sound that many popular artists use today. Artists like Drake, A$AP Rocky, and Big K.R.I.T. owe a lot of their style and success to the groundwork laid by UGK and Bun B.

3. Pimp C
Pimp C, as one half of the group UGK, was a key figure in shaping the sound of Southern hip-hop. He was a talented rapper, songwriter, and producer, making him highly influential in the history of rap music.
Pimp C’s influence continues to be felt in Southern rap today, solidifying his legacy as one of Texas’s most important musical artists, even years after his death.
Pimp C was a hugely influential artist, both on his own and as part of UGK. But what truly set him apart was his captivating style and how naturally he rapped over rich soul music and the booming Southern Hip Hop beats of his era.
4. Lil’ Keke
Lil’ Keke is a Texas rap icon known for his long and reliable career. He’s been a key figure in Houston’s rap scene for decades and has created a huge body of work, making him one of the most important rappers to come out of Texas. Starting with the Screwed Up Click, Lil’ Keke has consistently released quality music, establishing himself as a major force in both Texas and Southern hip hop.
Lil’ Keke rose to fame with his early work, especially “Southside,” and remains a hugely influential figure in Houston rap, even after many years. His impact is still evident in the city’s hip-hop music today.
5. Z-Ro
Z-Ro, a highly respected rapper from Houston, has gained a dedicated fanbase thanks to his honest and heartfelt lyrics and the sheer amount of music he’s released. Even after over 20 years, his impact on hip-hop in Texas is still clear.
Z-Ro reached a wider audience with his 2004 album, The Life of Joseph W. McVey, which was also his first release with Rap-A-Lot Records. He continued to release consistently strong albums throughout the mid-2000s, including Let the Truth Be Told in 2005 and I’m Still Livin’ in 2006.
Back in 2007, the New York Times highlighted Z-Ro as one of the most overlooked rappers in the United States.
Z-Ro was a key figure in developing the distinctive style of Texas rap, combining honest storytelling with catchy melodies. His influence can be heard in much of today’s Southern hip-hop.
6. Devin the Dude
Devin the Dude doesn’t always get the recognition he deserves, but other rappers and true hip-hop heads definitely know how talented he is.
Devin the Dude stood out in Texas rap because he could deliver meaningful messages through music that still felt down-to-earth and clever. In the 2000s, when more aggressive styles of rap and hip-hop were popular, his approach was more relaxed and easygoing.
Devin the Dude is a highly respected rapper known for his relaxed flow and original way of telling stories. He’s gained admiration from many artists in the hip-hop world and created a strong, independent collection of music.

7. Megan Thee Stallion
Megan Thee Stallion has achieved a level of success no other female rapper from Texas has reached, becoming a major force in the music industry. Over the last ten years, she’s risen to prominence alongside artists like Nicki Minaj and Cardi B, proving her ability to draw huge crowds not only across the U.S., but throughout North America.
I’m a huge Megan Thee Stallion fan, and it’s amazing to see how popular she’s become! It’s not just in Texas or even just hip-hop fans anymore – she’s built this incredible following online. She has tens of millions of followers across social media, and right now, over 20 million people are listening to her every month on Spotify – it’s wild!
Megan’s influence extends far beyond her social media presence and marketing success. She first gained recognition in the rap world in the late 2010s, becoming well-known through the ‘Hot Girl Summer’ trend and a standout freestyle performance for XXL’s Freshman Class in 2019.
Through her Grammy wins, popular songs, and ability to attract fans from different music genres, Megan Thee Stallion brought Houston rap to a wider audience without losing the respect of core hip-hop fans.
8. Paul Wall
Paul Wall was key in popularizing Houston’s unique rap style across the U.S. in the mid-2000s. He helped bring national attention to Houston’s car culture and signature grill jewelry, notably with his 2005 hit, “Sittin Sidewayz.”
Paul Wall didn’t just become a successful rapper; he also played a key role in bringing Houston’s rap scene to national attention, becoming one of its most well-known representatives during the city’s rise in popularity.
Paul Wall earned his place as a key figure in Texas hip-hop by building genuine connections within the music scene. Rising to prominence in Houston during the late 90s and early 2000s, he worked with many iconic Texas rappers, including Chamillionaire, Slim Thug, Bun B, and the legendary UGK.
Even in 2026, Paul Wall remains a prominent artist in the Texas rap scene. He consistently puts out good music, building on his already impressive collection of work and solidifying his place as a key figure in Texas hip-hop.
9. Chamillionaire
Chamillionaire managed to become both a mainstream star and stay true to his Texas rap roots, making him one of the most famous hip-hop artists to come from the state.
Chamillionaire was a pioneer in the 2000s, not only boosting the profile of Houston rap but also changing how independent artists distributed and marketed their music.
He proved that rappers could build their careers independently, without needing major record labels, local connections, or radio play. They could successfully promote their music directly to fans and still earn positive reviews.
Chamillionaire, along with artists like Paul Wall and Slim Thug, was key in making Houston’s unique car and grill styles widely popular in the mid-2000s.
Chamillionaire was born in Washington D.C., but grew up in the Houston, Texas area after moving there when he was four years old. His hit song “Ridin'” played a big part in introducing Houston rap and its distinctive style to the world.

10. Travis Scott
Travis Scott is a huge rap star with international fame, and arguably the most famous to come out of Texas. However, when you look at skill with lyrics, impact on hip-hop within Texas itself, and the quality of their music overall, other artists have made a bigger mark.
Travis Scott didn’t just popularize a psychedelic trap sound in hip hop during the 2010s; with his Cactus Jack label, he sparked a movement that has reshaped and heavily influenced the sound of modern Southern rap.
The record label has boosted the careers of artists like Don Toliver and Sheck Wes, and it’s also broadened Travis Scott’s impact beyond his own songs. Albums like Rodeo, Astroworld, and Utopia have solidified Scott’s place as a leading artist in the streaming age and a well-known figure in contemporary hip-hop.
He’s become one of the most important rappers of his generation thanks to his impact on how hip-hop is made and performed today.
