I can’t help but feel a deep sense of disappointment and frustration when I think about Channing Tatum’s Gambit movie. As a fan of both Tatum’s acting abilities and the X-Men character, Gambit, I had high hopes that this solo flick would be a game-changer for both parties.

The film “Deadpool & Wolverine” is packed with surprise appearances. Cleverly, it brings back several characters who have been overlooked or neglected in previous Marvel films and reveals they’ve been exiled to The Void – essentially the MCU’s equivalent of a cosmic junkyard.

After being thrust into The Void, Deadpool and Wolverine encounter Elektra portrayed by Jennifer Garner, Blade played by Wesley Snipes, X-23 portrayed by Dafne Keen from “Logan,” and even Johnny Storm, played by Chris Evans in the initial “Fantastic Four” films. Their individual storylines did not receive proper conclusions, leading them to join forces with Deadpool and Wolverine in pursuit of an impressive and dignified end.

Channing Tatum’s most intriguing appearance is in a role where he didn’t get his own live-action film, surprising audiences with his New Orleans accent and using playing cards as weapons instead.

Well, he’s Gambit, and some of us are (unfortunately) old enough to remember when 20th Century Fox announced a Gambit film that never materialized—perhaps with good reason based on how ridiculous the character is in Deadpool & Wolverine. Here’s everything you need to know about Tatum’s Gambit.

Who is Gambit?

Remy LeBeau, also called Gambit or the Cajun Rogue in X-Men lore, is a lesser-known yet cherished mutant. He possesses the unique talent to generate explosive projectiles through kinetic energy. Fascinatingly, his preferred projectiles are playing cards.

A pickpocket with mutant abilities, hailing from New Orleans, joined the X-Men’s crimefighting squad in the past. He gained immense popularity among viewers during “X-Men: The Animated Series.” This year, he made a comeback on Disney+ through the animated “X-Men ’97” series.

Has Gambit appeared on the big screen?

In 2009, Taylor Kitsch portrayed Gambit in “X-Men Origins: Wolverine,” with Channing Tatum absent due to filming “G.I. Joe: Rise of the Cobra.” However, it’s Tatum who has been attempting to bring a standalone Gambit film to life for the past ten years, despite previous failures. This movie marks his long-awaited debut as the character, adding an amusing jab at the complexities and challenges of producing superhero movies in Hollywood.

The character and the film “X-Men Origins” were met with unfavorable reactions. In this production, Ryan Reynolds first appeared as Deadpool. Surprisingly, the chatty character nicknamed “the Merc With a Mouth” had his mouth sewn shut in the movie. Unsatisfied with how Deadpool was depicted in “X-Men Origins,” Reynolds became resolved to give the character justice and ultimately initiated the Deadpool franchise in 2016.

Gambit, by contrast, never found his way to the big screen again…until Deadpool & Wolverine.

What happened to the Gambit movie?

After the achievement of “21 Jump Street,” Tatum aimed to create a stand-alone movie for Gambit. In 2014, 20th Century Fox gave the project their approval. However, Tatum faced numerous challenges during the film’s development process which lasted for years.

A number of filmmakers, including Gore Verbinski (known for “Pirates of the Caribbean”) and Doug Liman (“Mr. and Mrs. Smith”), were initially involved in the project but eventually left. Edgar Wright, director of “Hot Fuzz,” shared in an interview with SlashFilm that Simon Kinberg, producer of X-Men, approached him about directing Gambit, a role which Wright declined. Tatum had suggested co-directing with his producing partner Reid Carolin but the studio was not keen on the idea due to their lack of previous directorial experience.

“There seemed to be debate regarding how to depict the character. According to Tatum, he was described as ‘flamboyant.’ I, however, saw him differently; he was simply the most stylish and charismatic person I knew. Unlike many superheroes who wear practical outfits, Gambit took pride in his fashion-forward attire. He believed that his clothes were not just functional but also trendy and chic, reflecting his love for haute couture.”

Tatum described the tone of his “Gambit” movie as similar to “Deadpool,” making it a comedic romance with an R rating. In the source material from comics and animated shows, Rogue is the beloved X-Men character who often interacts romantically with Gambit.

In 2019, when Disney completed its merger with 20th Century Fox, Tatum lost faith that the movie would ever get produced. According to Carolin, they had planned to commence filming in New Orleans when suddenly, the production came to a halt.

In an interview with Vanity Fair in 2023, Tatum expressed that after Fox was acquired by Disney and merged with Marvel, the creative direction for the film they had planned no longer aligned with Disney’s vision. He mentioned, “Perhaps they are still figuring out how to proceed with or without us. We reach out occasionally, but it seems we must relinquish control spiritually, emotionally, and mentally.”

Is the Gambit movie still dead after Deadpool & Wolverine?

One way to paraphrase “Probably” in this context could be “It is likely that”.

Most likely, Tatum will defy expectations and allow the showing of “Deadpool & Wolverine.” The actor appears to have moved past the displeasure of the challenging filming experience for “Gambit.” He’s open to poking fun at himself now. Deadpool teases Tatum about his accent and claims that important information is lost whenever Gambit speaks. He calls him a close-up magician and jokes about his fashion sense. It’s amusing, but not the strongest foundation for a possible spinoff.
