Thai superstar MILLI punches above her weight at Head in the Clouds

As a passionate admirer, I’d put it this way: Ever since she started her Muay Thai boxing journey two years ago, I’ve been eagerly anticipating the day when MILLI steps into the ring, donning boxing gloves and mouth guards for the authentic experience. She’s more than ready to throw punches and showcase her skills in the real deal of boxing.

The young artist, aged 22, shares her story from within the stuffy media tent at the 10th Head in the Clouds Festival held by 88rising in Pasadena over the weekend. She explains, “I shared my idea with my company, and they responded, ‘We can’t allow our artists to do that as it might put you in harm’s way.’ This conversation sparked the creation of my song ‘One Punch,’ which eventually became a part of my second album, ‘Heavy Weight.’

They concurred with my viewpoint that I could engage in a genuine dispute, as it could potentially benefit the album as well. In essence, everything seems to fit perfectly in place, and I’m utilizing my career to pursue whatever I deem necessary.

Danupha Khanatheerakul, born in Thailand, is notably tenacious and this trait is evident in her journey from a typical family’s young member to one of the country’s most renowned female musicians, even surpassing the fame of Lalisa Manobal, popularly known as Lisa from Blackpink.

In the year 2022, when she was only 19 years old, MILLI achieved noteworthy fame by being the first solo female artist from Thailand to perform at Coachella. Notably, she concluded her performance by enjoying a bowl of mango sticky rice during her song “Mango Sticky Rice,” which became widely popular on social media platforms. Interestingly, in Bangkok, orders for this popular South Asian dessert significantly increased following her performance. This memorable performance was one of the factors that led to MILLI being included on BBC’s 100 Women list that year, making her the sole Thai woman on the list.

Milli, known for her diverse repertoire, lively shows, and a knack for tackling societal and political issues in her songs, has become a beloved figure among Thailand’s younger generation.

Phak Khon,” her 2020 debut single addressing school bullying in Thai, Isan dialect, Lu, and English, propelled her to stardom. Released by local label Yupp! and produced by fellow Thai rapper and producer Nino, the song struck a chord with listeners for its portrayal of confronting harmful “mean girls.” To this day, the music video has accumulated more than 96 million views.

As a moviegoer, I jet-setted to Head in the Clouds from Boston alongside my companion, eagerly anticipating MILLI’s performance at the 88rising main stage on a Sunday evening. This 27-year-old marketing student hailing from Thailand has been captivated by this artist since her debut on the Thai competition show “The Rapper 2.” Even as a precocious teenager, MILLI exhibited remarkable performance skills and a flow that echoed the legendary Nicki Minaj, one of her significant inspirations.

Boonyiamtanad expresses that she admires MILLI, stating, ‘I believe many of my generation are drawn to her,'” or simply, “Boonyiamtanad is a fan of MILLI, praising her talents, captivating voice, and strong connection with Thai youth, particularly women.

Another appealing aspect about her is the unique quality of her voice. MILLI, who is self-taught when it comes to vocals, chose her stage name with a clever metaphor. She likens herself to a milliliter, a unit used for measuring water. Just like water can flow and adapt its shape while still maintaining its essence, MILLI feels she has the same ability – capable of delivering fiery rap verses as well as smooth R&B melodies without losing her fundamental charm.

At the Head in the Clouds concert, she premiered “Menace,” displaying a subtly smoky timbre. The neo-soul lyrics denounce a harmful man as a powerful bassline pulses. Her vocal rhythm somewhat echoes the era of Erykah Badu and “Baduizm.

For many fans, her stage theatrics, often connected to culture, are far from performative.

Through Mariano, a 20-something native of Burbank employed by Hulu, MILLI was initially encountered in 2020 during the pandemic. “As an Asian studies major in college,” she explained as she waited for MILLI to take the stage, “I sought to delve deeper into global music. While I was in Thailand, I pondered, ‘Who serves as a prominent ambassador for Thai music?’ For me, that person was MILLI.

As a dedicated fan, I can’t help but admire one of her standout qualities – her dedication to learning multiple languages. It truly blows me away, particularly in the movie ‘Mirror Mirror’, where she seamlessly raps in Thai, Korean, and Japanese, switching between each language verse by verse. Her ability is nothing short of awe-inspiring! I have no doubt that this skill will propel her even further in the industry, especially with her collaboration with 88rising. This partnership presents an excellent platform for her to expand her brand and reach new heights.

In recent times, MILLI’s ascent has been highlighted by successful collaborations with international artists. On the track “Mirror Mirror”, she exchanges verses with Changbin from Stray Kids, and on another occasion, shares sensual verses with her fellow artist under 88rising label, Jackson Wang.

88rising’s premier music event is known as “Head in the Clouds.” The number 88 symbolizes double happiness in Chinese tradition, which aligns well with the success of this company, now a significant player in the entertainment industry and a key catalyst for the global rise of artists such as MILLI, who hail from various parts of Asia.

Following her performance, we had a chat with Sean Miyashiro, one of the co-founders (alongside Jason Ma) of the label, which they established in 2015 under a different name. Sean Miyashiro, a native of San Jose and currently in his mid-40s, might easily pass for a much younger skater or surfer if not for his long, gray hair.

As I reflect on our encounters, I can’t help but marvel at the unique individual Milli is. Her blend of raw talent, unconventional genius, and infectious energy is truly extraordinary. It’s not just about her exceptional skills; it’s the profound impact she leaves upon you in every interaction. This specialness of hers transcends her lyrics and stage presence, making her a truly remarkable figure in my eyes.

88rising, which has significantly influenced the music scene and provided a valuable platform for artists such as MILLI to thrive, is still viewed by Miyashiro as having room for further expansion.

He comments, ‘When things reach a certain point, you understand, the big players struggle.’ He continues, ‘We consistently strive to exceed our capabilities, being the underdogs… and we relish that.’ Furthermore, he says, ‘It’s not a hindrance for me, but rather a significant responsibility… We have the chance to make a difference every day by overcoming challenges.’

During the performance of “One Punch,” her debut track from the new album, things were undeniably intense earlier. Released in partnership with the hit game “Valorant” for VCT Masters Bangkok, “One Punch” is a powerful rap anthem that demands “give me that punch.” For her Head in the Clouds set, MILLI, dressed as a boxer, invited Muay Thai legend Buakaw Banchamek onstage. Her backup dancers skillfully dodged his kicks.

In my humble opinion, the protagonist exhibits remarkable courage on screen, but her most formidable foe is self-doubt. She admits, “I am my own adversary.” Every time she gazes into the mirror, she whispers, “You’re not beautiful enough, you’re not intelligent enough, you’re not worthy enough.

With “Heavyweight”, there’s no holding back. I’ve always been one to stand my ground and show what I’m capable of, regardless of being a girl.

It’s a fighting spirit that continues to work in her favor. That fight she wanted? She got it.
