Tess Daly is supported by husband Vernon Kay and lookalike daughter Phoebe, 21, as she receives MBE from King Charles at Windsor Castle and dedicates the honour to her late father

Tess Daly received an honor from King Charles at a ceremony at Windsor Castle on Wednesday, with her husband Vernon Kay and daughter Phoebe, who bears a strong resemblance to her, in attendance.

Strictly host Tess Daly, 56, has been made an MBE for her work in broadcasting. She dedicated the honor to her father, Vivian, who died in 2003, just 18 days after her wedding to Radio 2 DJ Vernon Kay, 53.

Tess looked stunning in a short red dress with a cape, completing her outfit with a matching fascinator and nude-colored heels.

Twenty-one-year-old Phoebe, clearly taking style cues from her mother, wore a chic cream lace outfit completed with a pillbox hat.

It was so lovely to see Vernon looking so proud! He was really dapper in a navy suit, beaming as he watched his daughter, Amber, who’s 16, do her thing. You could just tell how much he cared.

Tess said the King made her feel comfortable during the ceremony, and she called the experience the highlight of her career.

I’ve spent 25 years working in television, and I truly enjoy it. It was an honor to be among so many accomplished people who’ve positively impacted their communities and built impressive careers. The whole experience was incredibly inspiring.

You know, meeting the King was actually much more relaxed than I expected! I was definitely a bit nervous beforehand, but he immediately put me at ease. We ended up chatting about Strictly Come Dancing – apparently, the Queen was a big fan! It was such a lovely surprise to receive a personal letter from her when I was awarded my MBE – it truly meant the world to me.

The King expressed his gratitude for my work with The King’s Trust, his charity. We discussed the funds raised and the positive impact it’s had on the lives of many young people, and I’m very proud to support the organization as an ambassador.

This achievement means a lot to my family and me. I especially wish my late father could be here to see this – he would have been incredibly proud of me meeting the King in a castle.

Tess’s father, Vivian, sadly passed away from emphysema shortly after her honeymoon with Vernon. She has often said her greatest regret is that he never had the chance to meet his granddaughters.

Emphysema, as defined by the NHS, is a lung condition where the air sacs are damaged. This makes it hard to breathe because the air sacs lose their stretchiness and become larger, reducing how well the lungs work.

In a 2020 interview with the Daily Mail, she shared her biggest regret: that her father never had the chance to meet her children, knowing he would have loved them. She also wished he could have seen her on Strictly Come Dancing, believing he would have been incredibly proud, especially considering his love for Bruce Forsyth and ballroom dancing.

Vernon’s support for his wife meant he was off Radio 2, and the station had to quickly find a replacement – Paddy McGuinness – to fill in.

Scott Mills, 51, who hosts the morning show, said he was surprised by the recent changes. This came just after Vernon, also 51, apologized for using inappropriate language on live radio.

He told Paddy he almost announced it was 9:30 and introduced Vernon Kay, explaining he hadn’t been informed Paddy was filling in for Vernon and simply assumed Paddy was visiting.

After a colleague playfully mentioned mutual disappointment, Scott continued, explaining how he was excited to see a particular guest. He recalled a mix-up where producers thought he’d said ‘Paddy’ when he’d actually said ‘Vernon,’ but ultimately wished the show’s hosts well.

This incident happened only a day after Vernon, who co-parents a 16-year-old daughter named Amber, unintentionally used profanity while broadcasting.

The radio host, who started presenting the mid-morning program in May 2023, was talking about Sara Cox’s marathon for BBC Children in Need when he accidentally said something he didn’t mean to.

After seeing a heartfelt message supporting Sara’s marathon, which ended with encouragement like ‘Go Sara, you’re doing great, keep going!’ Vernon simply exclaimed, ‘It really does! Wow!’

Squirming, he added: ‘I mean flipping hell, oh gosh. Sorry, sorry, I apologise, I apologise.’

Vernon quickly apologized for his mistake on live television, explaining that a touching story about a young boy had deeply moved him and caused him to stumble.

He added, ‘But the case with the 12-year-old boy whose twin was terminally ill – that’s the one that really affected me.’

On Monday morning, 50-year-old Sara started the challenging 135-mile Great Northern Marathon, which began in Kielder Forest.

The five-day challenge, the longest ever for BBC Children in Need on Radio 2, began with the celebrity joined by both local residents and some unusual fans.
